Investigation of wheat coleoptile response to phototropic stimulations
This report provides a summary of the preparations for, and the conduct and post-flight data analysis of, the Spacelab flight investigation FOTRAN, which flew on the IML-1 mission (STS-42) in January, 1992. The investigation was designed to provide data on the responses of wheat seedlings to various blue-light stimuli given while the plants were exposed to orbital microgravity conditions. Before the flight, a number of hypotheses were established which were to be tested by the data from the flight and parallel ground studies. A description of the experiment protocol developed for the mission is provided, and an account of the activities supported during preparations for and support of the flight experiment is given. Details of the methods used to reduce and analyze the data from the flight are outlined
On Greenberg\u27s question: an algebraic and computational approach
Greenberg asked whether arithmetically equivalent number fields share the same Iwasawa invariants. In this dissertation it is shown that the problem naturally breaks up into four cases, depending on properties of Galois groups. This analysis is then used to give a positive answer to Greenberg’s question in some nontrivial examples
A proposal to determine properties of the gravitropic response of plants in the absence of a complicating g-force (GTHRES)
Gravitropic responses of oat seedlings (Avena sativa L.) were measured on Earth and in microgravity (IML-1). The seedlings were grown at 1 g either on Earth or on 1 g centrifuges. They were challenged by centripetal accelerations for which the intensity and duration of the stimulations were varied. All stimulation intensities were in the hypogravity region from 0.1 to 1.0 g. All responses occurred either in Spacelab microgravity or during clinorotation on Earth. The experiments were carried out with the same apparatus in Spacelab and on Earth. The experiments addressed a series of scientific questions and useful data were obtained to provide answers to some but not all of those questions

programs to be used for problems in continental shelf dynamics. Three of the
programs are to be used for computing properties of free and forced
coastal-trapped waves. A final program may be used to compute wind-driven
fluctuations over the continental shelf and slope. This second edition
includes several minor revisions and corrections in the computer code and the

Computer Vision Based Object Detection and Tracking in Micro Aerial Vehicles
ÂÂÂÂThe ultimate goal of Computer Vision is to instruct a computer to understand and interpret visual signals and images in real time and to instruct a computer to react to the environment around them. In this work, we describe a system that allows a micro aerial vehicle (MAV), equipped with an onboard camera, to detect and track a moving target object. In an alternative implementation, the MAV instead searches the environment for the target object and flies to it. Due to the limited capability of the drone’s integrated processor, image processing is performed by a ground-based computer that also determines the necessary flight corrections and communicates them to the vehicle. The complete system, comprised of the MAV, off-board computer, and software, operates autonomously, a necessary condition for many of the applications for which such systems may be useful

Eyespray Vaccination: Infectivity and Development of Immunity to Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria tenella
The infectivity of a coccidiosis vaccine and its ability to immunize chickens against two species of Eimeria was examined. The vaccine was administered to newly-hatched chicks by spraying directly onto the eye. The method resulted in a high proportion of chicks infected with E. acervulina and E. tenella. Vaccinated birds reared in cages in the absence of reinfection did not develop immunity to either species by 4 wk of age, but birds reared in floor pens developed immunity to both E. acervulina and E. tenella
Confirmation of the effectiveness of sub-mm source redshift estimation based on rest-frame radio to FIR photometry
We present a comparison between the published optical, IR and CO
spectroscopic redshifts of 15 (sub-)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts
as derived from long-wavelength (radio-mm-FIR) photometric data. The redshift
accuracy measured for 12 sub-mm galaxies with at least one robustly-determined
colour in the radio-mm-FIR regime is dz=0.30 (r.m.s.). Despite the wide range
of spectral energy distributions in the local galaxies that are used in an
un-biased manner as templates, this analysis demonstrates that photometric
redshifts can be efficiently derived for sub-mm galaxies with a precision of dz
< 0.5 using only the rest-frame FIR to radio wavelength data.Comment: submitted to MNRAS (1 object removed from analysis, shortening of
