    Topological hybrid electron-hole Cooper pairing

We consider electron--hole Cooper pair condensation in a heterostructure formed by a topological insulator film and a quantum well. We argue that the helical nature of the Dirac electronic states at the topological insulator surface results in the presence of two competing degenerate pairing channels. The corresponding paired states have an unconventional symmetry in the order parameter describing the Cooper pair condensate, can be classified by the topological Chern invariant, and are topologically distinct. We discuss possible manifestations of the nontrivial topology, including the formation of chiral states at the domain walls separating two distinct states, quantized anomalous transport phenomena, and connections with chiral topological superconductivity.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Parent-child relationships and skill in reading

Thesis (Ed.M.)--Boston UniversityThe purpose of this study is to find the relationship between the parental attitudes of acceptance and rejection and skill in reading in a group of fifty-eight male students from a private preparatory school. Parental attitudes tend to fall into two main classifications: acceptance and rejection. The attitude of parental acceptance is closely related to the sentiment of love. The attitude of parental rejection is closely related to the sentiment of hate. Many parents have ambivalent feelings of love and hate for their children, but there is a tendency for either acceptance or rejection to be predominant in the total parental relationship with the child

Long-term Hybrid Stabilization of the Carrier-Envelope Phase

Controlling the carrier envelope phase (CEP) in mode-locked lasers over practically long timescales is crucial for real-world applications in ultrafast optics and precision metrology. We present a hybrid solution that combines a feed-forward technique to stabilize the phase offset in fast timescales and a feedback technique that addresses slowly varying sources of interference and locking bandwidth limitations associated with gain media with long upper-state lifetimes. We experimentally realize the hybrid stabilization system in an Er:Yb:glass mode-locked laser and demonstrate 75 hours of stabilization with integrated phase noise of 14 mrad (1 Hz to 3 MHz), corresponding to around 11 as of carrier to envelope jitter. Additionally, we examine the impact of environmental factors, such as humidity and pressure, on the long-term stability and performance of the system.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; to be published in Optics Express; revisions include adjustment of some citations, additions to section 2, and added information in table

Petr and Nikolai Semenov are typical representatives of liberal gentry, who were landlords and owners of serfs, but both of them were preoccupied for a long time with the problem of serfdom. Petr Petrovich Semenov (1827–1914)—since 1906 Semenov-Tian-Shanski—was more famous as geographer, and he devoted much of his time to studying various aspects of the agrarian problems in Russia and Europe. That enabled him to take active part in the preparatory activities aimed at abolition of serfdom as qualified expert and head of administrative affairs of the Editing Commissions. Nikolaï Petrovich Semenov (1823–1904), jurist, Ober-Procurator of one of the Senate Departments, participated in the Commissions activities as its member representing Ministry of Justice. When the Emancipation reform took place, the two brothers left important evidences regarding preparation of the Tsar’s Emancipation Manifesto and the Peasantry Regulations dated from February 19, 1861 and continued to be interested in the fate of the emancipated peasants. They were defending interests of peasants without forgetting the interests of landlords at the same time. Both supported idea of freeing peasants with some land, but within limits acceptable for the landlords. Their conceptual idea was close to the ideas of the Slavophil as may be seen from passionate speeches by of Nikolai Semenov devoted to conservation of agricultural communities (called obshchina) in Russia.

I is for Agency: Education, Social Justice, and Auto/Biographical Practices

In this polyphonic pedagogical essay, six members of the Department of English at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez discuss their incorporation of auto/biographical acts into course syllabi for the purpose of facilitating social justice in and through education. Drawing from disciplinarily diverse faculty members holding different contractual positions within the university, this essay demonstrates the widespread need for creating space for student voices as means of supporting agency on- and off-campus, especially in times of disaster, tragedy, and crisis

IntroductionTo evaluate the activity of a nonplatinum-, nonetoposide-containing regimen for patients with extensive stage small cell lung cancer.MethodsPatients with untreated extensive stage small cell lung cancer were treated with gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 and irinotecan 100 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle for a maximum of six cycles. Patients with brain metastases were eligible if asymptomatic or controlled after radiation.ResultsEighty-four eligible patients with untreated extensive stage small cell lung cancer with adequate organ function and a performance status of 0–2 were accrued. The median age was 64 years (range, 42–85) and 45 (54%) were women. Six cycles were completed by 28 (33%) patients. Some degree of diarrhea occurred in 57% (grade 3/4, 18%). Other grade 3/4 toxicities were neutropenia (26%), anemia (10%), thrombocytopenia (8%), febrile neutropenia (5%), fatigue (11%), nausea (10%), and vomiting (8%). The response rate was 32% (95% confidence interval: 22%–43%) among the 81 patients with measurable disease. The median survival was 8.5 months (95% confidence interval: 7.0–9.8) with 1- and 2-year survival rates of 26% and 7%, respectively. Salvage therapy data were captured by prospective collection, and only 50% of patients were treated secondarily.ConclusionThe overall response rate with the combination of gemcitabine and irinotecan was disappointing, and the median survival rate was lower than expected. Further development of this combination in small cell lung cancer is not recommended
