Troubleshooting Arterial-Phase MR Images of Gadoxetate Disodium-Enhanced Liver.

    Get PDF
Gadoxetate disodium is a widely used magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent for liver MR imaging, and it provides both dynamic and hepatobiliary phase images. However, acquiring optimal arterial phase images at liver MR using gadoxetate disodium is more challenging than using conventional extracellular MR contrast agent because of the small volume administered, the gadolinium content of the agent, and the common occurrence of transient severe motion. In this article, we identify the challenges in obtaining high-quality arterial-phase images of gadoxetate disodium-enhanced liver MR imaging and present strategies for optimizing arterial-phase imaging based on the thorough review of recent research in this field

Radical Structures of Fuzzy Polynomial Ideals in a Ring

    Get PDF
We investigate the radical structure of a fuzzy polynomial ideal induced by a fuzzy ideal of a ring and study its properties. Given a fuzzy ideal Ī² of R and a homomorphism f:Rā†’Rā€², we show that if fx is the induced homomorphism of f, that is, fx(āˆ‘i=0naixi)=āˆ‘i=0nf(ai)xi, then fx-1[(Ī²)x]=(f-1(Ī²))x

We characterized and compared the characteristics of Ca2+ movements through the sarcoplasmic reticulum of inferior oblique muscles in the various conditions including primary inferior oblique overaction (IOOA), secondary IOOA, and controls, so as to further understand the pathogenesis of primary IOOA. Of 15 specimens obtained through inferior oblique myectomy, six were from primary IOOA, 6 from secondary IOOA, and the remaining 3 were controls from enucleated eyes. Ryanodine binding assays were performed, and Ca2+ uptake rates, calsequestrins and SERCA levels were determined. Ryanodine bindings and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake rates were significantly decreased in primary IOOA (p<0.05). Western blot analysis conducted to quantify calsequestrins and SERCA, found no significant difference between primary IOOA, secondary IOOA, and the controls. Increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration due to reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake may play a role in primary IOOA

Air-stable n-type operation of Gd-contacted carbon nanotube field effect transistors

    Get PDF
We report air-stable n -type operations of the single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (SWNT-FETs) fabricated with Gd electrodes. Unlike previously reported n -type SWNT-FETs, our devices maintained their n -type operation characteristics in ambient atmosphere for more than two months. The shallow Gd films with a thickness below 20 nm are corroded by environmental oxygen, whereas the well-contacted Gd-SWNT interfaces underneath the thick Gd layers are protected from contaminations by air molecules. Theoretical studies based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations confirm that Gd layers have an excellent binding affinity to the SWNTs.open8

Clinical Characteristics and Genotypes of Rotaviruses in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

BackgroundThere are few reports on the symptoms of rotavirus infections in neonates. This study aims to describe clinical signs of rotavirus infections among neonates, with a particular focus on preterm infants, and to show the distribution of genotypes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).MethodsA prospective observational study was conducted at a regional NICU for 1 year. Stool specimens from every infant in the NICU were collected on admission, at weekly intervals, and from infants showing symptoms. Rotavirus antigens were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and genotypes were confirmed by Reverse transcription-Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The infants were divided into three groups: symptomatic preterm infants with and without rotavirus-positive stools [Preterm(rota+) and Preterm(rotaā€“), respectively] and symptomatic full- or near-term infants with rotavirus-positive stools [FT/NT(rota+)]. Demographic and outcome data were compared among these groups.ResultsA total of 702 infants were evaluated for rotaviruses and 131 infants were included in this study. The prevalence of rotavirus infections was 25.2%. Preterm(rota+) differed from Preterm(rotaā€“) and FT/NT(rota+) with respect to frequent feeding difficulty (pĀ =Ā 0.047 and 0.034, respectively) and higher percentage of neutropenia (pĀ =Ā 0.008 and 0.011, respectively). G4P[6] was the exclusive strain in both the Preterm(rota+) (97.7%) and FT/NT(rota+) (90.2%), and it was the same for nosocomial, institutional infections, and infections acquired at home.ConclusionSystemic illness signs such as feeding difficulty and neutropenia are specific for preterm infants with rotavirus infections. G4P[6] was exclusive, regardless of preterm birth or locations of infections. This study might be helpful in developing policies for management and prevention of rotavirus infections in NICUs

Carbon nanotube diode fabricated by contact engineering with self-assembled molecules

The authors report the construction of carbon nanotube Schottky diodes by covering a selectively exposed area of the electrode with self-assembling molecules. Two self-assembling molecules with different polarities, 2-aminoethanethiol and 3-mercaptopropionic acid, were used to modify the Fermi level lineup at the selected contact. The devices showed p -type behavior with symmetric I-V showing clear rectifying behavior after treatment of one contact with 2-aminoethanethiol. Their experiment, in conjunction with the results of ab initio electronic structure calculations, suggests that the diode action stems from the asymmetric Fermi level lineup between the bare and engineered contacts.open131

Void containing AlN layer grown on AlN nanorods fabricated by polarity selective epitaxy and etching method

Creating voids between thin films is a very effective method to improve thin film crystal quality. However, for AlN material systems, the AlN layer growth, including voids, is challenging because of the very high Al atom sticking coefficient. In this study, we demonstrated an AlN template with many voids grown on AlN nanorods made by polarity selective epitaxy and etching methods. We introduced a low V/III ratio and NH3_3 pulsed growth method to demonstrate high-quality coalesced AlN templates grown on AlN nanorods in a metal organic chemical vapor deposition reactor. The crystal quality and residual strain of AlN were enhanced by the void formations. It is expected that this growth method can contribute to the demonstration of high-performance deep UV LEDs and transistors

AbstractBackgroundRoles of immune reaction and toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) have widely been established in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD).MethodsWe evaluated the biologic efficacy of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG), urushiol, and probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and Lactobacillus acidophilus R0052) in mouse models of ALD. Sixty C57BL/6 mice were equally divided into six feeding groups for 10 weeks: normal diet, alcohol, control, alcoholĀ +Ā KRG, alcoholĀ +Ā urushiol, and alcoholĀ +Ā probiotics. Alcohol was administered via a Lieberā€“DeCarli liquid diet containing 10% alcohol. TLR-4 expression, proinflammatory cytokines, and histology, as well as the results of liver function tests were evaluated and compared.ResultsNo between-group differences were observed with regard to liver function. TLR-4 levels were significantly lower in the KRG, urushiol, and probiotics groups than in the alcohol group (0.37Ā Ā±Ā 0.06Ā ng/mL, 0.39Ā Ā±Ā 0.12Ā ng/mL, and 0.33Ā Ā±Ā 0.07Ā ng/mL, respectively, vs. 0.88Ā Ā±Ā 0.31Ā ng/mL; pĀ <Ā 0.05). Interleukin-1Ī² levels in liver tissues were decreased among the probiotics and KRG groups. The tumor necrosis factor-Ī± level of liver tissue was decreased in the KRG group.ConclusionThe pathological findings showed that alcohol-induced steatosis was significantly reduced by KRG and urushiol. As these agents improve immunologic capacity, they may be considered in potential anti-ALD treatments
