    Investigation of the [1,5]-hydride shift as a route to nitro-Mannich cyclisations

    Conditions were found for the [1,5]-hydride shift nitro-Mannich reaction that led to the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted tetrahydroquinolines. Two simple cyclic amine substrates gave diastereomerically pure rearranged products in 65 and 90% yields by refluxing in HFIP. A more general procedure used Gd(OTf)3 as a catalyst and successfully rearranged other cyclic and acyclic amines in 42–84% yield with diastereomeric ratios of 75:25 to >95:5 in favour of the anti-diastereoisomer (9 examples). Two examples of sulphur containing heterocycles gave lower yields of 9 and 25%. Electron withdrawing substituents were shown to have a deleterious effect on the success of the reaction.     Adiposity, its related biologic risk factors, and suicide: a cohort study of 542,088 Taiwanese adults

    Recent studies in Western nations have shown inverse associations between body mass index (BMI, measured as weight (kg)/height (m)(2)) and suicide. However, it is uncertain whether the association is similar in non-Western settings, and the biologic pathways underlying the association are unclear. The authors investigated these issues in a cohort of 542,088 Taiwanese people 20 years of age or older who participated in a health check-up program (1994-2008); there were 573 suicides over a mean 8.1 years of follow up. There was a J-shaped association between BMI and suicide risk (P for the quadratic term = 0.033) but limited evidence of a linear association (adjusted hazard ratio per 1-standard-deviation increase = 0.95 (95% confidence interval: 0.85, 1.06)); compared with individuals whose BMI was 18.5-22.9, adjusted hazard ratios for those with a BMI /=35 were 1.56 (95% confidence interval: 1.07, 2.28) and 3.62 (95% confidence interval: 1.59, 8.22), respectively. A high waist-to-hip ratio was associated with an increased risk of suicide. There was some evidence for a reverse J-shaped association of systolic blood pressure and high density lipoprotein cholesterol with suicide and an association of higher triglyceride level with increased suicide risk; these associations did not appear to mediate the associations of BMI and waist-to-hip ratio with suicide.postprin

    Rapid identification of the medicinal plant Taraxacum formosanum and distinguishing of this plant from its adulterants by ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) based DNA barcode

    Original identification of medicinal plants is essential for quality control. In this study, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) nuclear ribosomal DNA served as a DNA barcode and was amplified by allele-specific PCR. This approach was exploited to differentiate Taraxacum formosanum from five related adulterants. Using a set of designed PCR primers, a highly specific 223 bp PCR product of T. formosanum was successfully amplified by PCR. However, no similar DNA fragment was amplified from any of the other adulterants.     Improvement in photovoltaic performance of rutile-phased TiO2 nanorod/nanoflower-based dye-sensitized solar cell

    An improved dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) of rutile-phased titanium dioxide (TiO2) electrode with increased power conversion efficiency was successfully fabricated. Rutile-phased TiO2 nanorods and nanoflowers were grown directly on fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) by simple aqueous chemical growth technique using one-step hydrothermal process. The solution was prepared by mixing hydrochloric acid, deionized water, and titanium butoxide used as precursor. In the preparation of DSC, both TiO2 nanorods and nanoflowers, platinum (Pt), ruthenium dye N719, and DPMII electrolyte were used as photoelectrode, counter electrode, dye solution, and liquid electrolyte, respectively. The prepared rutile-phased TiO2 nanorods and nanoflowers samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DSCs were fabricated based on the rutile-phased titanium dioxide nanorod and nanoflower photoelectrodes. For their energy conversion efficiency, I-V characteristics and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were studied. We also investigated the effect of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) reaction times 2, 5, and 10 h in the preparation of rutile-phased TiO2 nanoflowers for DSC. CTAB is one of the capping agents that cover the refine surface of nanoparticles and prevent them from coagulation or aggregation. In our final result, the combination of rutile-phased TiO2 nanorod- and nanoflower-based DSCs showed best efficiency at approximately 3.11% due to its good electron transport of TiO2 nanorods and increased surface area by the TiO2 nanoflowers that had increased dye absorption

    Automatic control of finite element models for temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation

    BACKGROUND: The finite element method (FEM) has been used to simulate cardiac and hepatic radiofrequency (RF) ablation. The FEM allows modeling of complex geometries that cannot be solved by analytical methods or finite difference models. In both hepatic and cardiac RF ablation a common control mode is temperature-controlled mode. Commercial FEM packages don't support automating temperature control. Most researchers manually control the applied power by trial and error to keep the tip temperature of the electrodes constant. METHODS: We implemented a PI controller in a control program written in C++. The program checks the tip temperature after each step and controls the applied voltage to keep temperature constant. We created a closed loop system consisting of a FEM model and the software controlling the applied voltage. The control parameters for the controller were optimized using a closed loop system simulation. RESULTS: We present results of a temperature controlled 3-D FEM model of a RITA model 30 electrode. The control software effectively controlled applied voltage in the FEM model to obtain, and keep electrodes at target temperature of 100°C. The closed loop system simulation output closely correlated with the FEM model, and allowed us to optimize control parameters. DISCUSSION: The closed loop control of the FEM model allowed us to implement temperature controlled RF ablation with minimal user input

    A framework for integrating sustainability estimation with concepts of rules of building measurement

    BIM promises improvement in project delivery efficiencies such as reduction in costs and errors and timely completion. Benefits are also expected in sustainable construction aspect with research efforts being extended to sustainable design and assessment. These efforts are still been explored for the purposes of unifying quantification methodologies, the standardisation of system boundaries, terms of references and sustainability measures. Embodied energy and CO2 are two common measures that have been widely used in the construction sector. Although a number calculation system exists, they are not useful to the iterations that occur at the early stages of the project life cycle. At the procurement stage, professionals often rely on schedules and bill of quantities with no reference to sustainability credentials. It is therefore important to integrate sustainability measure with concepts in standard measurement methods. As such, we propose a framework to integrate sustainability credential with the concepts in rule of building measurement. We conclude that this framework can be applicable to any rule of building measurement and it is implementable in a computer programmable environment
