Luxury fashion brands: factors influencing young female consumers' luxury fashion purchasing in Taiwan
Purpose - Against the background of increasing consumption of luxury fashion brands by young female consumers in Asian countries, this paper offers insights into the consumption motives and purchasing behaviour of that market segment in Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach - Analysis of data collected using face-to-face semi-structured interviews with twenty-three 18-32 year-old fashion-conscious females was completed and new empirical insights are offered.
Findings - The study found a high level of involvement in the world of luxury fashion retailing. Asian consumers devoured media commentary, drew inspiration from female celebrities, and treated information-seeking and discussion of luxury fashion brands with friends as a serious and enjoyable pursuit. The social status conferred by expensive fashion wear motivated them to spend on luxury brands even if their discretionary income was limited. Potential guilt in so doing was assuaged by rationalising that the quality was good and the purchase would be long lasting. Marketers targeting this valuable segment should communicate appeals to an aspirational lifestyle in traditional and social media, effective at reaching young women.
Originality/value - The study reported in this article contributes to the limited published research into the luxury marketing sector in Asia by examining the buying behaviour of female Strawberry Generation consumers in Taiwan. It is the first to research and investigate the meanings attached to luxury by these individuals in the collectivist culture of Taiwan, as well as their motivations, and the factors influencing their purchase of luxury fashions. The study thus contributes with new knowledge to the buying of luxury fashion products by young female Taiwanese consumers, which may be extended to other collectivist cultures in Asia
Conceptus-induced, interferon tau-dependent gene expression in bovine endometrial epithelial and stromal cells†
International audienceAbstract Bovine endometrium consists of epithelial and stromal cells that respond to conceptus interferon tau (IFNT), the maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) signal, by increasing expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). Endometrial epithelial and stromal-cell-specific ISGs are largely unknown but hypothesized to have essential functions during pregnancy establishment. Bovine endometrial epithelial cells were cultured in inserts above stromal fibroblast (SF) cells for 6 h in medium alone or with IFNT. The epithelial and SF transcriptomic response was analyzed separately using RNA sequencing and compared to a list of 369 DEGs recently identified in intact bovine endometrium in response to elongating bovine conceptuses and IFNT. Bovine endometrial epithelial and SF shared 223 and 70 DEGs in common with the list of 369 endometrial DEGs. Well-known ISGs identified in the epithelial and SF were ISG15, MX1, MX2, and OAS2. DEGs identified in the epithelial but not SF included a number of IRF molecules (IRF1, IRF2, IRF3, and IRF8), mitochondria SLC transporters (SLC25A19, SLC25A28, and SLC25A30), and a ghrelin receptor. Expression of ZC3HAV1, an anti-retroviral gene, increased specifically within the SF. Gene ontology analysis identified the type I IFN signaling pathway and activation of nuclear factor kappa B transcription factors as biological processes associated with the epithelial cell DEGs. This study has identified biologically relevant IFNT-stimulated genes within specific endometrial cell types. The findings provide critical information regarding the effects of conceptus IFNT on specific endometrial compartments during early developmental processes in cattle
Observation of oscillatory relaxation in the Sn-terminated surface of epitaxial rock-salt SnSe topological crystalline insulator
Topological crystalline insulators have been recently predicted and observed
in rock-salt structure SnSe thin films. Previous studies have
suggested that the Se-terminated surface of this thin film with hydrogen
passivation, has a reduced surface energy and is thus a preferred
configuration. In this paper, synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission
spectroscopy, along with density functional theory calculations, are used to
demonstrate conclusively that a rock-salt SnSe thin film
epitaxially-grown on \ce{Bi2Se3} has a stable Sn-terminated surface. These
observations are supported by low energy electron diffraction (LEED)
intensity-voltage measurements and dynamical LEED calculations, which further
show that the Sn-terminated SnSe thin film has undergone a surface
structural relaxation of the interlayer spacing between the Sn and Se atomic
planes. In sharp contrast to the Se-terminated counterpart, the observed Dirac
surface state in the Sn-terminated SnSe thin film is shown to yield a
high Fermi velocity, m/s, which suggests a potential mechanism
of engineering the Dirac surface state of topological materials by tuning the

Cadmium accumulation and interactions with zinc, copper, and manganese, analysed by ICP-MS in a long-term Caco-2 TC7 cell model
The influence of long-term exposure to cadmium (Cd) on essential minerals was investigated using a Caco-2
TC7 cells and a multi-analytical tool: microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
Intracellular levels, effects on cadmium accumulation, distribution, and reference concentration
ranges of the following elements were determined: Na, Mg, Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Cd.
Results showed that Caco-2 TC7 cells incubated long-term with cadmium concentrations ranging from 0 to
10 lmol Cd/l for 5 weeks exhibited a significant increase in cadmium accumulation. Furthermore, this
accumulation was more marked in cells exposed long-term to cadmium compared with controls, and that
this exposure resulted in a significant accumulation of copper and zinc but not of the other elements
measured. Interactions of Cd with three elements: zinc, copper, and manganese were particularly studied.
Exposed to 30 lmol/l of the element, manganese showed the highest inhibition and copper the lowest on
cadmium intracellular accumulation but Zn, Cu, and Mn behave differently in terms of their mutual
competition with Cd. Indeed, increasing cadmium in the culture medium resulted in a gradual and significant
increase in the accumulation of zinc. There was a significant decrease in manganese from 5 lmol
Cd/l exposure, and no variation was observed with copper.

Library 2.0: the effectiveness of social media as a marketing tool for libraries in educational institutions
In an attempt to market their services and connect with potential users, and particularly young people, many libraries are opening accounts on social media platforms. Research suggests a contradiction between the advice relating to marketing and that regarding the use of social media in libraries, with the former emphasising the importance of the user at the centre of all considerations and the latter placing library staff as central to decisions. In this work we attempt to re-address this imbalance by surveying the current state of library activity on Twitter and, by means of questionnaires, investigate the experiences and motivations of librarians (n=58) in using social media and whether students (n=498) are willing to engage with the library in this manner and why. Our findings confirm that libraries in the sector are indeed struggling to foster interest in their social media activities and go some way to understanding why this is so, leading to a number of conclusions and recommendations for practitioners
