    Spontaneous bilateral femoral neck and left scapula fracture in a young adult with end-stage renal disease

    Renal osteodystrophy is not uncommon in chronic kidney disease patients however fractures are not common among these patients. Bilateral spontaneous femoral and scapular fractures due to renal osteodystrophy are extremely uncommon. We report a case of spontaneous bilateral femoral neck fracture and left scapular neck fracture associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism in a patient of end-stage renal disease

    Ultrasound-assisted extraction of natural dye from Swietenia mahagoni and its application on silk fabric

    The current study deals with the extraction of natural dyes from the flower of the Sweitenia mahagoni plant by ultrasound-assisted extraction method using ethanol as solvent. Box-Behnken design has been employed to optimize and investigate the effect of three independent variables (sample-solvent ratio, sonication time and extraction temperature) on the natural dye yield. The results reveal that the experimental data are fitted to a second-order polynomial equation using multiple regression analysis with high coefficient of determination value (R2> 0.98, Adj. R² >0.96 & Pred. R² >0.81). Optimal extraction conditions for the dyes yield are: sample-solvent ratio 1/20 g/mL, sonication time 30 min and extraction temperature 50°C. Under these conditions, the highest dyes yield is predicted to be 0.855%. FTIR spectroscopy has been used to identify the major chemical group in the extracted dye. Further, dyeing of silk fabric has been carried out by an exhausted dyeing method and the dyeing property and fastness properties of the dyed samples are also assessed

    One of the less researched aspects of postcolonial India’s “progressive” culture is its Soviet connection. Starting in the 1950s and consolidating in the 1960s, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics invested in building up “committed” networks amongst writers, directors, actors, and other theater- and film-practitioners across India. Thus, an entire generation of cultural professionals was initiated into the anticolonial solidarity of emerging Afro-Asian nations that were seen, and portrayed, by the Soviets as being victims of “Western” imperialism. The aspirational figure of the New Soviet Man was celebrated through the rise of a new form of “transactional sociality” (Westlund 2003). This paper looks at selected cases of cultural diplomacy—through the lens of cultural history—between the USSR and India for two decades after India’s Independence, exploring the possibility of theorizing it from the perspective of an anticolonial cultural solidarity that allowed agency to Indian interlocutors

A partir da noção de sociologia não exemplar são apresentados alguns dos possíveis caminhos teórico-metodológicos que possibilitariam um posicionamento mais simétrico para a produção de conhecimento localizada fora da Euro-América.The paper introduces the contemporary debates on the relation of social sciences in Africa and Brazil by framing them both under the current discussion about the "sociologies of the south" and the ones on "the geopolitics of knowledge". Deploying the notion of a "non-exemplary sociology", I seek to present some possible theoretical and methodological ways that would enable a more symmetric positioning of the knowledge produced outside the Euro-America

    AbstractThe rapid urban growth and anthropogenic activities have posed a threat to the local environment and ecosystem around the world. This situation has become a hindrance to planners and policy makers for sustainable urban development. Therefore, this study mainly focuses on the assessment of urban growth patterns in relation to urban sprawl in Jalpaiguri urban agglomeration. Multi-temporal Landsat data have been used for land use change detection and urban sprawl quantification. The maximum likelihood classifier technique has been performed to create land use land cover maps for each study year (2001, 2011 and 2021). Urban expansion intensity index has been applied to determine the magnitude of urban expansion. Landscape metrics and Shannon’s entropy have been employed to assess the urban sprawl to a spatial extent. Spatiotemporal land use changes reveal that the non-urban class (vegetation, agriculture, water bodies, and fallow) have been decreasing consistently with an increase in built-up areas over time. Built-up area has increased by almost seven times in the span of the last 20 years (2001–2021). In the first decade, the growth rate of urban areas was 145.42% with a medium speed of expansion and in the next decade, it was 180.83% with a very high speed. Landscape metrics show that the fragmentation of the entire urban landscape into small patches happened from 2001 to 2011 in a higher magnitude indicating the occurrence of sprawling characteristics. But in recent times, the entire landscape is aggregating into large single urban patches which indicate a clumpy situation and would affect the local ecological environment. Shannon’s entropy model also verifies the compact urban sprawl in different directions and distances from the city centre. The understanding of urban growth dynamics and land use changes is essential for addressing the rapid urbanization within this urban region. There is an immediate need for an appropriate strategy for effective utilization of land use and monitoring of uncontrolled and haphazard urban growth. This research study would help the urban planner to take a specific scope of action for future urban growth and development

We did vigorous gastric lavage with saline, activated charcoal, and coconut oil. The other supportive treatment improved the outcome of the patient with complete resolution of symptoms

    Phakometry using Bessel beams

    Phakometry is an optical technique where the reflections of light from optical discontinuities inside the eye are recorded and used to calculate the lens radii of curvature, tilt, decentration, and refractive index. Currently, phakometry suffers from diffuse reflections from lens surfaces with weak signal-to-noise ratio, which limits the accuracy of the method. A diffractionless Bessel beam was used to improve those reflections, thereby improving the accuracy and repeatability of this technique

    Fabrication and development of effective visible-light-responsive photocatalysts are required to tackle critical environmental issues. The aim of this study was to develop a nanocomposite material with improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of industrial dyes such as Reactive Orange-16 (RO-16), Reactive Blue (RB-222), Reactive Yellow-145 (RY-145), and Disperse Red-1 (DR-1) without the need for a post-separation process after use. Here we report the hydrothermal synthesis of nanodots of Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), coated with polyaniline, by in situ polymerization. The Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanodots, coated with polyaniline (PANI) nanograins, facilitated optical properties by easily capturing visible light. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images have confirmed the single-phase spinel structure of Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanodot and nano-pore size of the Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI nanophotocatalyst. The specific surface area of the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) of the Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI photocatalyst was determined to be 24.50 m2/g by multipoint analysis. The final Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI (x = 0.5) nanophotocatalyst showed high efficiency in the catalytic degradation of toxic dyes (∼98% within 5 min), with good mechanical stability and recyclability under visible light irradiation. The nanophotocatalyst was re-used and its efficiency was largely maintained, even after seven cycles (∼82%) of degradation. The effects of various parameters, such as initial dye concentration, nanophotocatalyst concentration, initial pH of dye solution, and reaction kinetics were studied. According to the Pseudo-first-order kinetic model, photodegradation data followed the first-order reaction rate (R2 > 0.95) of degradation of dyes. In conclusion, a simple and low-cost synthesis process, speedy degradation and excellent stability of polyaniline-coated Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanophotocatalyst could be used as a promising photocatalyst for dye-wastewater treatment
