Structure and thermodynamics of colloid-polymer mixtures: a macromolecular approach
The change of the structure of concentrated colloidal suspensions upon
addition of non-adsorbing polymer is studied within a two-component,
Ornstein-Zernicke based liquid state approach. The polymers' conformational
degrees of freedom are considered and excluded volume is enforced at the
segment level. The polymer correlation hole, depletion layer, and excess
chemical potentials are described in agreement with polymer physics theory in
contrast to models treating the macromolecules as effective spheres. Known
depletion attraction effects are recovered for low particle density, while at
higher densities novel many-body effects emerge which become dominant for large
polymers.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; to be published in Europhys. Let
Structural relaxation in a system of dumbbell molecules
The interaction-site-density-fluctuation correlators, the dipole-relaxation
functions, and the mean-squared displacements of a system of symmetric
dumbbells of fused hard spheres are calculated for two representative
elongations of the molecules within the mode-coupling theory for the evolution
of glassy dynamics. For large elongations, universal relaxation laws for states
near the glass transition are valid for parameters and time intervals similar
to the ones found for the hard-sphere system. Rotation-translation coupling
leads to an enlarged crossover interval for the mean-squared displacement of
the constituent atoms between the end of the von Schweidler regime and the
beginning of the diffusion process. For small elongations, the superposition
principle for the reorientational -process is violated for parameters
and time intervals of interest for data analysis, and there is a strong
breaking of the coupling of the -relaxation scale for the diffusion
process with that for representative density fluctuations and for dipole
reorientations.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, Phys. Rev. E in pres

Scattering of electromagnetic waves by rough interfaces and inhomogeneous layers
We consider a two-dimensional problem of scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave by an infinite inhomogeneous conducting or dielectric layer at the interface between semi-infinite homogeneous dielectric half-spaces. The magnetic permeability is assumed to be a fixed positive constant. The material properties of the media are characterized completely by an index of refraction, which is a bounded measurable function in the layer and takes positive constant values above and below the layer, corresponding to the homogeneous dielectric media. In this paper, we examine only the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization case. A radiation condition appropriate for scattering by infinite rough surfaces is introduced, a generalization of the Rayleigh expansion condition for diffraction gratings. With the help of the radiation condition the problem is reformulated as an equivalent mixed system of boundary and domain integral equations, consisting of second-kind integral equations over the layer and interfaces within the layer. Assumptions on the variation of the index of refraction in the layer are then imposed which prove to be sufficient, together with the radiation condition, to prove uniqueness of solution and nonexistence of guided wave modes. Recent, general results on the solvability of systems of second kind integral equations on unbounded domains establish existence of solution and continuous dependence in a weighted norm of the solution on the given data. The results obtained apply to the case of scattering by a rough interface between two dielectric media and to many other practical configurations
Disclination Asymmetry in Two-Dimensional Nematic Liquid Crystals with Unequal Frank Constants
The behavior of a thin film of nematic liquid crystal with unequal Frank
constants is discussed. Distinct Frank constants are found to imply unequal
core energies for and disclinations. Even so, a topological
constraint is shown to ensure that the bulk densities of the two types of
disclinations are the same. For a system with free boundary conditions, such as
a liquid membrane, unequal core energies simply renormalize the Gaussian
rigidity and line tension.Comment: RevTex forma
Catecholborane Reductions of Ditosylhydrozones to the Corresponding Methylene Derivatives
The smooth deoxygenation of diketones via the Catecholborane reduction of the corresponding ditosylhydrzaones is described. The reductions occur under mild conditions and are suitable for sensitive compounds
Lattice Model of Sweeping Interface for Drying Process in Water-Granule Mixture
Based on the invasion percolation model, a lattice model for the sweeping
interface dynamics is constructed to describe the pattern forming process by a
sweeping interface upon drying the water-granule mixture. The model is shown to
produce labyrinthine patterns similar to those found in the experiment[Yamazaki
and Mizuguchi, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{69} (2000) 2387]. Upon changing the
initial granular density, resulting patterns undergo the percolation
transition, but estimated critical exponents are different from those of the
conventional percolation. Loopless structure of clusters in the patterns
produced by the sweeping dynamics seems to influence the nature of the
transition.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
