Bracketing in Phenomenology: Only Undertaken in the Data Collection and Analysis Process

Our aim with this article is to demonstrate how the researchers use bracketing as a method of demonstrating the validity after initiating a phenomenological study. Although bracketing is a method of demonstrating the validity of the da ta collection and analysis process in most phenomenological studies, how the researchers use them in practice is rarely demonstrated explicitly. We collected data through our experiences in preparing a phenomenological research study. We suggest that the concept of bracketing should be adopted upon initiating the research proposal and not merely in the data collection and analysis process. We propose four strategies for doing bracketing that are guided by the thinking activity of reflexivity: mentality assessment and preparation before deciding the research paradigm, deciding the scope of the literature review according to the prevailing gate - keeping policy, planning for data collection using semi - structured interviews guided by open - ended questions, and planning for data analysis using Colaizzi’s method. Our proposition highlights that thorough preparation for doing bracketing is essential before entering the data collection and analysis process in phenomenology, because they are sequentially related

Objectives. This study aims to report our experience in the management of HNBCC in ethnic Chinese over a 10-year period. Methods. A retrospective review of all ethnic Chinese patients with HNBCC treated in a tertiary centre from 1999 to 2009. Results. From 1999 to 2009, 225 patients underwent surgical excision for HNBCC. Majority were elderly female patients. Commonest presentation was a pigmented (76.2%) ulcer (64.8%) over the nose (31.6%). Median skin margin taken on tumour excision was 2.0 mm; primary skin closure was achieved in 51.8%. Postresection skin margin was clear in 75.4%. Of those with inadequate skin margins, 56.7% opted for further treatment, 43.4% for observation. Recurrence rates were 2.6% and 13.8%, respectively (P = 0.106). Overall recurrence rate was 5.5%. Conclusions. HNBCC commonly presented as pigmented ulcers over the nose of elderly female patients in our locality. Adequate tumour excision ± reconstruction offered the best chance of cure. Reexcision of those with inadequate skin margins improved local tumour control

Extramammary Paget's Disease: 20 Years of Experience in Chinese Population

Background. To examine the results of treatment of Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) in ethnic Chinese. Method. Between 1990 and 2010, patients treated for EMPD were reviewed. Data were analyzed retrospectively. Results. Forty-eight patients were treated by surgical resection. Local recurrence rate was 14.6%. The postresection defects were repaired by primary closure (8.3%), partial thickness skin graft (72.9%), or local/regional flaps (18.8%). Dermal invasion was found in 9 patients (18.8%). Seven patients (14.6%) developed regional lymph node metastasis (concurrent with surgery, n = 1; subsequent to surgery, n = 6), and 3 patients (6.3%) had systemic metastasis after surgery. The presence of dermal invasion was associated with significantly higher incidence of regional lymph nodes and systemic metastasis. The incidence of associated internal malignancy was 8.3%. Conclusion. The mainstay of treatment for EMPD is surgery. Pathological dermal invasion increases the chance of regional lymph node as well as systemic metastasis. The association with internal malignancy warrants preoperative endoscopic examination in all patients

Profiling the differentially expressed genes in two rice varieties during rapid grain-filling stages

Grain filling is an important agronomic trait, which directly affects the final yield of rice. Partially filled and empty rice grains are among the factors that limit the yield of MR219, one of the highest yielding rice varieties in Malaysia. In this study, the NSF 20 K rice oligonucleotide array, which contains 20,000 70-mer oligonucleotide probes, was used for direct comparison of the transcriptomes of MR219 and MR84 (a rice variety that has higher percentage of filled grains compared to MR219), during rapid grain-filling period at 5 and 10 days after fertilization (DAF). A total of 155 and 233 genes were differentially expressed in MR219 compared to MR84 at 5 and 10 DAF, respectively; and 9 of these expression ratios were tested using quantitative real-time RT PCR. Among the differentially expressed genes identified were those encoding hexokinase, various sugar transporters, GSDL-like lipase/acylhydrolase, brassinosteroid-insensitive 1-associated receptor kinase 1 precursor and homeobox protein GLABRA2, which were analyzed by real-time RT PCR in this study. The differences demonstrated by these genes in their transcript levels and profiles, between the two rice varieties understudied at different stages of grain filling may contribute to the formulation of hypotheses toward the understanding of poor percentage of filled grains in MR219
