Formation of terrestrial planets in close binary systems: the case of Alpha Centauri A
At present the possible existence of planets around the stars of a close
binary system is still matter of debate. Can planetary bodies form in spite of
the strong gravitational perturbations of the companion star? We study in this
paper via numerical simulation the last stage of planetary formation, from
embryos to terrestrial planets in the Alpha Cen system, the prototype of close
binary systems. We find that Earth class planets can grow around Alpha Cen A on
a time-scale of 50 Myr. In some of our numerical models the planets form
directly in the habitable zone of the star in low eccentric orbits. In one
simulation two of the final planets are in a 2:1 mean motion resonance that,
however, becomes unstable after 200 Myr. During the formation process some
planetary embryos fall into the stars possibly altering their metallicity.Comment: accepted for pubblication in A&A, 13 pages, 9 figure
PBP4: A New Perspective on Staphylococcus aureus β-Lactam Resistance.
β-lactam antibiotics are excellent drugs for treatment of staphylococcal infections, due to their superior efficacy and safety compared to other drugs. Effectiveness of β-lactams is severely compromised due to resistance, which is widespread among clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus. β-lactams inhibit bacterial cells by binding to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs), which perform the penultimate steps of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Among PBPs of S. aureus, PBP2a has received the most attention for the past several decades due to its preeminent role in conferring both high-level and broad-spectrum resistance to the entire class of β-lactam drugs. Studies on PBP2a have thus unraveled incredible details of its mechanism of action. We have recently identified that an uncanonical, low molecular weight PBP of S. aureus, PBP4, can also provide high-level and broad-spectrum resistance to the entire class of β-lactam drugs at a level similar to that of PBP2a. The role of PBP4 has typically been considered not so important for β-lactam resistance of S. aureus, and as a result its mode of action remains largely unknown. Galaxy Interactions in Compact Groups II: abundance and kinematic anomalies in HCG 91c
Galaxies in Hickson Compact Group 91 (HCG 91) were observed with the WiFeS
integral field spectrograph as part of our ongoing campaign targeting the
ionized gas physics and kinematics inside star forming members of compact
groups. Here, we report the discovery of HII regions with abundance and
kinematic offsets in the otherwise unremarkable star forming spiral HCG 91c.
The optical emission line analysis of this galaxy reveals that at least three
HII regions harbor an oxygen abundance ~0.15 dex lower than expected from their
immediate surroundings and from the abundance gradient present in the inner
regions of HCG 91c. The same star forming regions are also associated with a
small kinematic offset in the form of a lag of 5-10 km/s with respect to the
local circular rotation of the gas. HI observations of HCG 91 from the Very
Large Array and broadband optical images from Pan-STARRS suggest that HCG 91c
is caught early in its interaction with the other members of HCG 91. We discuss
different scenarios to explain the origin of the peculiar star forming regions
detected with WiFeS, and show that evidence point towards infalling and
collapsing extra-planar gas clouds at the disk-halo interface, possibly as a
consequence of long-range gravitational perturbations of HCG 91c from the other
group members. As such, HCG 91c provides evidence that some of the
perturbations possibly associated with the early phase of galaxy evolution in
compact groups impact the star forming disk locally, and on sub-kpc scales.Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, MNRAS accepted. Until publication of the

PATENTS, R&D AND LAG EFFECTS: EVIDENCE FROM FLEXIBLE METHODS FOR COUNT PANEL DATA ON MANUFACTURING FIRMS
Hausman, Hall and Griliches (1984) and Hall, Griliches and Hausman (1986) investigated whether there was a lag in the patent-R&D relationship for the U.S. manufacturing sector using 1970¿s data. They found that there was little evidence of anything but contemporaneous movement of patents and R&D. We reexamine this important issue employing new longitudinal patent data at the firm level for the U.S. manufacturing sector from 1982 to 1992. To address unique features of the data, we estimate various distributed lag and dynamic multiplicative panel count data models. The paper also develops a new class of count panel data models based on series expansion of the distribution of individual effects. The empirical analyses show that, although results are somewhat sensitive to different estimation methods, the contemporaneous relationship between patenting and R&D expenditures continues to be rather strong, accounting for over 60% of the total R&D elasticity. Regarding the lag structure of the patents-R&D relationship, we do find a significant lag in all empirical specifications. Moreover, the estimated lag effects are higher than have previously been found, suggesting that the contribution of R&D history to current patenting has increased from the 1970¿s to the 1980¿s.Innovative activity, Patents and R&D, Individual effects, count panel data methods.
Symmetry Scheme for Amino Acid Codons
Group theoretical concepts are invoked in a specific model to explain how
only twenty amino acids occur in nature out of a possible sixty four. The
methods we use enable us to justify the occurrence of the recently discovered
twenty first amino acid selenocysteine, and also enables us to predict the

XAS study of the local environment of impurities in doped TiO2 thin films
In this work we present an X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy characterization of
the local environment of the impurity in room temperature ferromagnetic anatase
TiO2 thin films doped with Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn, deposited on LaAlO3 substrate by
Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was found that there is a considerable amount of
impurity atoms substituting Ti in TiO2 anatase, although the presence of metal
transition monoxide clusters can not be discarded. From our results we infer
that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism of the samples could be
assigned to the metal transition atoms replacing Ti in TiO2 anatase.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Physica B (in press
Uist Lagoons Survey
Scotland has around a hundred saline lagoons, coastal lochs that are not quite as saline as the sea. A small number of organisms are confined to these lochs, but most of these are very small and belong to groups that are difficult to identify. A consortium of specialists in identification at the National Museum of Scotland and ecologists sampled most of the saline lagoons on designated sites (SSSI and SAC) in the Uists, the area believed to have the best biodiversity of lagoon organisms in Scotland. The study not only confirmed the presence of these specialist species, but also that they were more widely distributed in the Uists than had been believed. Samples of the organisms have been placed in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Scotland and (for plants) in the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, where they will be available for future study
