Some aspects of dispersive horizons: lessons from surface waves
Hydrodynamic surface waves propagating on a moving background flow experience
an effective curved space-time. We discuss experiments with gravity waves and
capillary-gravity waves in which we study hydrodynamic black/white-hole
horizons and the possibility of penetrating across them. Such possibility of
penetration is due to the interaction with an additional "blue" horizon, which
results from the inclusion of surface tension in the low-frequency gravity-wave
theory. This interaction leads to a dispersive cusp beyond which both horizons
completely disappear. We speculate the appearance of high-frequency
"superluminal" corrections to be a universal characteristic of analogue gravity
systems, and discuss their relevance for the trans-Planckian problem. We also
discuss the role of Airy interference in hybridising the incoming waves with
the flowing background (the effective spacetime) and blurring the position of
the black/white-hole horizon.Comment: 29 pages. Lecture Notes for the IX SIGRAV School on "Analogue

The Role of Mediating Institutions for the Integration of Brazilian (Im-)Migrants in Japan
In the 1990s, the economic downturn and hyperinflation in Brazil motivated many descendants of Japanese migrants (Nikkeijin) living in Brazil to ‘return’ to Japan, where an aging population and a booming economy had led to a labor shortage. Another incentive was the revision of the Japanese Immigration Law in 1990 that allowed Nikkeijin up to the third generation to obtain special permanent residency visa. Approximately 220.000 Latin American returnees arrived in the 1990s, and more than 200.000 Brazilians live in Japan today, constituting the fifth largest group of foreigners. As many have decided to stay in Japan for the time being, integration and multiculturalism have become important societal challenges, especially at the local level.
This dissertation examines the role of mediating institutions for the integration of Brazilian return migrants in Japan. Based on ethnographic field research in Hamamatsu, the Japanese city with the highest number of Brazilian residents, three research areas have been determined: everyday life and community, religion, and education. The relevant mediating institutions, such as cultural centers, libraries, churches, schools, and civil society institutions, were identified and their activities analyzed with regard to the research question of what role these institutions play for the process of integration into the host society and the relation to Japanese residents.
The analysis revealed that as spaces of interaction and encounter and as providers of knowledge, education, and information, mediating institutions serve as promoters of multiculturalism, mutual understanding, and integration. At the same time, they offer a space of belonging and creation of an ethnic support network, which facilitates the formation of a parallel society and exacerbates existing divisions. In other words, mediating institutions simultaneously foster and hinder integration processes.
The fossil Middle Pleistocene bats from the Cave of Aldène (Hérault, France)
[ABSTRACT]
The fossils preserved in the sediments of the cave of Aldène show that this cave was used as
a roosting place by at least eight different bat species during the Middle Pleistocene. Myotis
myotis is the species best represented, and occurs at all the levels with bat remains. The high
proportion of unworn teeth found of this species, together with some deciduous elements
preserved at two different levels suggest the cave was occupied by nursery colonies. M. myotis
occasionally shared the cave with other bat species from the genera Myotis, Rhinolophus,
Pipistrellus, Barbastella and Miniopterus. Although these accompanying species are not so
well represented in the associations, they provide interesting data concerning variations in the
climatic conditions, to be compared to the interpretations carried out on the basis of the rodent
fauna
New data on bat fossils from Middle and Upper Pleistocene localities of France
We describe the bat fossils preserved in four sites from the middle and upper Pleistocene, three of them being well-known French localities: the
rock shelter of Les Valerots, the caves of l’Escale at Saint Estève Janson and ‘‘du Prince’’ at Grimaldi (Italy), and the filling of Combe-Grenal, all of
them containing microvertebrate assemblages with yet undescribed bat fossils. All species represented in these four localities are still presently
distributed in France and had been previously recorded in other Pleistocene localities of central and western Europe, including France. The four
assemblages differ both in the abundance of bat fossils as in species composition. The characteristics of each assemblage are analysed under
modern insights of bat taphonomy and ecology, and compared with those of other bat-bearing French localities of similar age. The relevance of
these data concerning the use of the fossil bats to infer past environmental conditions is discussed.
Forgó, András, Kirchliche Einigungsversuche in Ungarn.
