    New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records (April 2015)

    The Collective Article ‘New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records’ of the Mediterranean Marine Science journal offers the means to publish biodiversity records in the Mediterranean Sea. The current article is divided in two parts, for records of native and alien species respectively. The new records of native fish species include: the slender sunfish Ranzania laevis and the scalloped ribbonfish Zu cristatus in Calabria; the Azores rockling Gaidropsarus granti in Calabria and Sicily; the agujon needlefish Tylosu¬rus acus imperialis in the Northern Aegean; and the amphibious behaviour of Gouania willdenowi in Southern Turkey. As regards molluscs, the interesting findings include Ischnochiton usticensis in Calabria and Thordisa filix in the bay of Piran (Slovenia). The stomatopod Parasquilla ferussaci was collected from Lesvos island (Greece); the isopod Anilocra frontalis was observed parasit¬izing the alien Pteragogus trispilus in the Rhodes area. The asteroid Tethyaster subinermis and the butterfly ray Gymnura altavela were reported from several localities in the Greek Ionian and Aegean Seas.The new records of alien species include: the antenna codlet Bregmaceros atlanticus in Saronikos Gulf; three new fish records and two decapods from Egypt; the establishment of the two spot cardinal fish Cheilodipterus novemstriatus and the first record of the marble shrimp Saron marmoratus in semi-dark caves along the Lebanese coastline; the finding of Lagocephalus sceleratus, Sargocentron rubrum, Fistularia commersonii and Stephanolepis diaspros around Lipsi island (Aegean Sea, Greece); the decapod Penaeus Hathor in Aegean waters; the decapod Penaeus aztecus and the nudibranch Melibe viridis in the Dodecanese islands; the finding of Pinctada imbricata radiate in the Mar Grande of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy) and the Maliakos Gulf (Greece)

    Central-Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) Incidence and the Role of Obesity: A Prospective, Observational Study in Greece

    Introduction: Although central venous catheters (CVCs) provide reliable vascular access, there are several risks linked with their use, with the rates of central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) being the most important ones. CLABSIs have a big impact on mortality rates and health care costs. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of obesity in the development of central venous catheter infections. Material and Method: This is a prospective, observational study. The data were collected in the ICUs of three major hospitals in Greece, over a period of 18 months. Totally, 744 patients were included in the study. Results: The study included 744 ICU patients aged 63.6 ± 16.6 years. The Apache II score and MODS score of patients were 23.3 ± 6.9 and 7.5 ± 3.8, respectively. Totally, 5.426 catheter-days were included in the study. Among the 722 CVCs, 178 (24.7%) were CLABSIs. The incidence rate of CVC-associated CLABSI was 22.48 infections per 1000 catheter-days. CLABSI was significantly predicted by the BMI (p = 0.001), by the diabetes mellitus as comorbidity (p = 0.013), by the doctors’ experience (p = 0.001), by the type of CVC (p = 0.001) and CVC site (p = 0.001), by the number of efforts for CVC insertion (p = 0.009), by the catheterization’s duration (p = 0.001) and by the MODS score (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Better staff training focused on care bundles preventing infections, better medical training focused on less efforts for CVC insertion, and the use of Ultrasounds during the CVC insertion may be the main factors that can lead to lower CLABSI rates in obese patients. Further research relating CLABSI rates in ICU patients and obesity is needed. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020

    Targeted Deletion of a Plasmodium Site-2 Protease Impairs Life Cycle Progression in the Mammalian Host

    Site-2 proteases (S2P) belong to the M50 family of metalloproteases, which typically perform essential roles by mediating activation of membrane-bound transcription factors through regulated intramembrane proteolysis (RIP). Protease-dependent liberation of dormant transcription factors triggers diverse cellular responses, such as sterol regulation, Notch signalling and the unfolded protein response. Plasmodium parasites rely on regulated proteolysis for controlling essential pathways throughout the life cycle. In this study we examine the Plasmodium-encoded S2P in a murine malaria model and show that it is expressed in all stages of Plasmodium development. Localisation studies by endogenous gene tagging revealed that in all invasive stages the protein is in close proximity to the nucleus. Ablation of PbS2P by reverse genetics leads to reduced growth rates during liver and blood infection and, hence, virulence attenuation. Strikingly, absence of PbS2P was compatible with parasite life cycle progression in the mosquito and mammalian hosts under physiological conditions, suggesting redundant or dispensable roles in vivo

    Body mass index and outcome of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients not treated by targeted temperature management

    Background Obesity has been demonstrated to increase the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and may influence the quality and effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Our aim was to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and the outcome of OHCA victims not treated by targeted temperature management. Methods This was a prospective observational study of OHCA patients. The patients were categorized according to BMI into two groups: the normal BMI group (nBMI) and the elevated BMI group (eBMI). The primary endpoint was return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), while secondary outcomes were survival to intensive care unit (ICU) admission and survival to ICU discharge. Results Of the initial 99 patients who were transported to the Emergency Department, 84 (85%) were included in the study. Mean BMI was 29.8 kg/m2. Thirteen (15.5%) patients achieved ROSC and were admitted to the ICU, with the mean duration of ICU length of stay being 6.7 ± 4.9 days. Survival to ICU admission and ICU discharge were higher in the eBMI group (17.6% vs. 6.25%, p = 0.010 and 10.3% vs. 6.25%, p = 0.021, respectively). Survival to ICU discharge was higher in ventricular fibrillation patients compared to patients with non-shockable rhythms, irrespectively of their BMI (p = 0.002). All patients that survived to ICU discharge did so with a cerebral performance category score of 2. Conclusions Survival to ICU admission and ICU discharge were higher in the eBMI group. © 2017 Elsevier Inc

    Clinical use of smartphones among medical and nursing staff in Greece: A survey

    The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical use of smartphones among medical and nursing staff in Greece. This study used a 17-item questionnaire that was administered to the participants by the authors. The sample consists of 974 participants of 1200 who were asked to participate (ie, a response rate of 81.3%). The survey was open to all categories of medical and nursing staff (junior doctors, specialized doctors, assistant nurses, and RNs). In total, 167 participants (18.5%) were nurse assistants; 385 participants (42.6%), nurses; 154 participants (17%), specialized doctors; and 198 participants (21.9%), junior doctors. The data analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics (version 21), and the significance level was set to .05. Medical doctors own smartphones on a higher percentage in comparison with nurses. Among smartphone owners, medical doctors use their devices for clinical issues more frequently compared with nurses. Although medical doctors believe that smartphones can be a great tool for their work, they state that they do not use it for clinical reasons. Nurses state that they do not use their smartphones for clinical reasons because they are not aware of the existence of applications that can be used to assist them in their daily clinical tasks

    Dengue Virus Replication Is Associated with Catecholamine Biosynthesis and Metabolism in Hepatocytes

    Previously, the association between the catecholamine biosynthetic enzyme L-Dopa decarboxylase (DDC) and Dengue virus (DV) replication was demonstrated in liver cells and was found to be mediated at least by the interaction between DDC and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). Here, we show that biogenic amines production and uptake impede DV replication in hepatocytes and monocytes, while the virus reduces catecholamine biosynthesis, metabolism, and transport. To examine how catecholamine biosynthesis/metabolism influences DV, first, we verified the role of DDC by altering DDC expression. DDC silencing enhanced virus replication, but not translation, attenuated the negative effect of DDC substrates on the virus and reduced the infection related cell death. Then, the role of the downstream steps of the catecholamine biosynthesis/metabolism was analyzed by chemical inhibition of the respective enzymes, application of their substrates and/or their products; moreover, reserpine, the inhibitor of the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2), was used to examine the role of uptake/storage of catecholamines on DV. Apart from the role of each enzyme/transporter, these studies revealed that the dopamine uptake, and not the dopamine-signaling, is responsible for the negative effect on DV. Accordingly, all treatments expected to enhance the accumulation of catecholamines in the cell cytosol suppressed DV replication. This was verified by the use of chemical inducers of catecholamine biosynthesis. Last, the cellular redox alterations due to catecholamine oxidation were not related with the inhibition of DV replication. In turn, DV apart from its negative impact on DDC, inhibits tyrosine hydroxylase, dopamine beta-hydroxylase, monoamine oxidase, and VMAT2 expression

    Synthesis and deposition of water-dispersed prussian blue nanocrystals on polymers and CNTs

Initial attempts to prepare Prussian Blue nanoclusters by a layer-by-layer deposition technique of hexacyanoferrate anions and ferric cations onto isolated polycation chains in water failed because of the desorption of the first layer upon deposition of the next one. A simple method for the preparation of charge-stabilized Prussian Blue nanoparticles of readily adjustable size is reported. Prussian Blue nanoparticles have been purified by addition of non-solvents and redispersed in water without aggregation. Thus formed Prussian Blue nanoparticles are crystalline and display a long-range ferromagnetic ordering at 5.1 K. Prussian Blue nanoparticles were selectively deposited along single polycation molecules to form a one-dimensional array or were attached to the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) functionalized with poly2-vinylpyridine (P2VP). These nanoparticle-based nanostructures might be useful materials for manufacture of electrooptical devices, or mechanically robust ion-sieving membranes

    Pop-up shops for increasing employability and contributing to civil society in times of austerity

    This chapter discusses a learning and teaching unit pop-up shop rooted in experiential learning. This pop-up shop learning activity aims to increase employability and educate young learners how to contribute to civil society. The discussion offers a reflection on how lecturers’ roles are changing in response to the austerity informed UK policies and HE measures. Universities are increasingly required to generate larger numbers of enterprising, employment-ready graduates. Increased monitoring of the efficient use of public spending in HE has seen the introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) bringing more focus on employability rates, which in turn help to determine university rankings. These rankings put pressure on HE senior management, which is then passed down through the hierarchy to lecturers. The detailed guidance on how to run pop-up shops offers a pragmatic answer to the outlined challenges to inspire lecturers to develop their learning and teaching strategies. Particular attention is paid to developing reflective skills in learners.N/
