Despite the experience of receiving charity assistance in the UK and around the world
tends to be highly unpleasant and sometimes damaging for users, this study finds out that the
experience at CHAI is highly pleasant and positively impactful for most recipients.
To know whether feelings of stigmatisation, as a form of charitable violence, are perceived
by clients when they decide to contact and be contacted by CHAI. I carried out 10 in-depth
interviews and 5 participant observations. To minimise risk around informed consent.
respondents were randomly chosen from a pre-selected list of potentially non-vulnerable
current and past CHAI clients of The Employability and Support Services. The results
showed that only 10% of participants felt unfairly judged by CHAI during the assistance
process. The analysis suggests that this is a result of the deeply embedded beliefs that
someone must meet the common governmental and media characterisation of looking
“hopeless” to be worthy of help. On the other hand, it suggests that the main reason for high
reviews on the experience may lie in the fact that CHAI assistance does not often involve
handouts but usually professional advice (as opposed to findings elsewhere). Nevertheless, it
found out that for most participants the true costs of receiving charity assistance often
involves proving deservedness and reciprocity, which, arguably, is also a way of exercising
charitable violence because users’ mental and physical health can be jeopardised
High-Efficient Parallel CAVLC Encoders on Heterogeneous Multicore Architectures
This article presents two high-efficient parallel realizations of the context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) based on heterogeneous multicore processors. By optimizing the architecture of the CAVLC encoder, three kinds of dependences are eliminated or weaken, including the context-based data dependence, the memory accessing dependence and the control dependence. The CAVLC pipeline is divided into three stages: two scans, coding, and lag packing, and be implemented on two typical heterogeneous multicore architectures. One is a block-based SIMD parallel CAVLC encoder on multicore stream processor STORM. The other is a component-oriented SIMT parallel encoder on massively parallel architecture GPU. Both of them exploited rich data-level parallelism. Experiments results show that compared with the CPU version, more than 70 times of speedup can be obtained for STORM and over 50 times for GPU. The implementation of encoder on STORM can make a real-time processing for 1080p @30fps and GPU-based version can satisfy the requirements for 720p real-time encoding. The throughput of the presented CAVLC encoders is more than 10 times higher than that of published software encoders on DSP and multicore platforms

Flow characteristics and heat transfer performance in a Y-Fractal mini/microchannel heat sink
This article presents a combined experimental and computational study to investigate the flow and heat transfer in a Y-fractal microchannel. Experimental apparatus was newly built to investigate the effect of three different control factors, i.e., fluid flow rate, inlet temperature and heat flux, on the heat transfer characteristics of the microchannel. A standard k-Ɛ turbulence computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed, validated and further employed to simulate the flow and heat transfer microchannel. A comparison between simulated results and the obtained experimental data was presented and discussed. Results showed that good agreement was achieved between the current simulated results and experimental data. Furthermore, an improved new design was suggested to further increase the heat transfer performance and create uniformity of temperature distribution.Peer reviewe
