    Asymptotically faster quantum algorithms to solve multivariate quadratic equations

    This paper designs and analyzes a quantum algorithm to solve a system of mm quadratic equations in nn variables over a finite field Fq{\bf F}_q. In the case m=nm=n and q=2q=2, under standard assumptions, the algorithm takes time 2(t+o(1))n2^{(t+o(1))n} on a mesh-connected computer of area 2(a+o(1))n2^{(a+o(1))n}, where t0.45743t\approx 0.45743 and a0.01467a\approx 0.01467. The area-time product has asymptotic exponent t+a0.47210t+a\approx 0.47210. For comparison, the area-time product of Grover\u27s algorithm has asymptotic exponent 0.500000.50000. Parallelizing Grover\u27s algorithm to reach asymptotic time exponent 0.457430.45743 requires asymptotic area exponent 0.085140.08514, much larger than 0.014670.01467

    Semiautomated text analytics for qualitative data synthesis.

    Approaches to synthesizing qualitative data have, to date, largely focused on integrating the findings from published reports. However, developments in text mining software offer the potential for efficient analysis of large pooled primary qualitative datasets. This case study aimed to (a) provide a step-by-step guide to using one software application, Leximancer, and (b) interrogate opportunities and limitations of the software for qualitative data synthesis. We applied Leximancer v4.5 to a pool of five qualitative, UK-based studies on transportation such as walking, cycling, and driving, and displayed the findings of the automated content analysis as intertopic distance maps. Leximancer enabled us to "zoom out" to familiarize ourselves with, and gain a broad perspective of, the pooled data. It indicated which studies clustered around dominant topics such as "people." The software also enabled us to "zoom in" to narrow the perspective to specific subgroups and lines of enquiry. For example, "people" featured in men's and women's narratives but were talked about differently, with men mentioning "kids" and "old," whereas women mentioned "things" and "stuff." The approach provided us with a fresh lens for the initial inductive step in the analysis process and could guide further exploration. The limitations of using Leximancer were the substantial data preparation time involved and the contextual knowledge required from the researcher to turn lines of inquiry into meaningful insights. In summary, Leximancer is a useful tool for contributing to qualitative data synthesis, facilitating comprehensive and transparent data coding but can only inform, not replace, researcher-led interpretive work.Wellcome Trus

    IceCube - the next generation neutrino telescope at the South Pole

    IceCube is a large neutrino telescope of the next generation to be constructed in the Antarctic Ice Sheet near the South Pole. We present the conceptual design and the sensitivity of the IceCube detector to predicted fluxes of neutrinos, both atmospheric and extra-terrestrial.     Plasma CC16 levels are associated with development of ALI/ARDS in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia: a retrospective observational study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite consensus criteria, diagnosing acute lung injury, or its more severe form acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) remains challenging. Adding objective measures, such as plasma levels of biological markers could facilitate recognition of ALI/ARDS. This study was designed to assess and compare the diagnostic accuracy of biological markers for ALI/ARDS with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed serial measurements of Clara cell protein (CC16), soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), surfactant protein D (SP-D) and Krebs von den Lungen (KL-6) in plasma of patients with VAP and mechanically ventilated control patients without VAP. ALI/ARDS was diagnosed using the criteria of the North-American European consensus conference.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty-seven patients were enrolled - 22 patients with VAP and 15 control patients. Ten patients with pneumonia met the ALI/ARDS consensus criteria. Control patients never met these criteria. Plasma CC16 had a good diagnostic capacity for ALI/ARDS as shown by the receiver operating characteristic curve with an area under the curve of 0.91 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.79 - 1.00; <it>p </it>< 0.001). Identification of ALI/ARDS patients by sudden increases in plasma CC16 of 30% or more yielded a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 92%. Of note, levels of CC16 increased 2 days before ALI/ARDS diagnosis. A cut-off level of 50 ng/ml SP-D yielded a specificity of 100% while the sensitivity was 70%. The area under the curve for SP-D was 0.80 (95% CI 0.58 - 1.00; <it>p </it>= 0.02). The diagnostic accuracies of KL-6 and sRAGE were low.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Plasma CC16 seems a potential biological marker for ALI/ARDS in patients with VAP. Plasma levels of sRAGE, SP-D and KL-6 have limited discriminative power for diagnosing ALI/ARDS in VAP.</p
