Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Grapevine Accessions Known as Albillo
Twenty-eight accessions identified under the name of Albillo or cited as a synonym of this ancient Spanish grapevine variety were characterized using 43 morphological descriptors, four different isozyme systems (CO, ACPH, GOT, and SOD) and two Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) primer combinations. Genetic similarity data resulting from these analyses allowed three different groups of Albillo to be distinguished that corresponded with geographical and historical origin of representative varieties: TurruntĂ©s, MalvasĂa de El Bierzo, and the classical Albillo de Madrid, related to the oldest Albillo ampelographical descriptions. In addition, homonyms as well as varieties incorrectly cited as Albillo synonyms were identified. To ensure accurate variety identification, association among historical descriptions based on morphological descriptors and molecular fingerprints was required. Isozymes proved to be useful markers for varietal identification. However, only AFLP allowed distinction among closely related varieties as well as the analysis of intravarietal variation.M.T.C. was funded by a Ministerio de EducaciĂłn y Cultura contract; I.R., J.A.C., and J.C. were funded by predoctoral fellowships from the European Union, Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrarias y Agroalimentarias, and Agencia Española de CooperaciĂłn Internacional, respectively. Testing whether muon neutrino flavor mixing is maximal
The small difference between the survival probabilities of muon neutrino and
antineutrino beams, traveling through earth matter in a long baseline
experiment such as MINOS, is shown to be an important measure of any possible
deviation from maximality in the flavor mixing of those states.Comment: Some revision has been made in the experimental discussions with two
new figures replacing the old ones and a clarification of the accuracy of the
perturbative result has been included. This version will be published in
Physical Review Letters. Title changed as asked by the editors of Physical
Review Letter

Varietal diversity within grapevine accessions of cv. Tempranillo
Intra-varietal diversity of 31 accessions named as Tempranillo or described as synonyms of this representative Spanish grapevine variety was assessed using 48 morphological descriptors and 95 AFLP markers obtained using 2 primer combinations. We could identify homonyms as well as accessions belonging to varieties which, depending on their regional origin, are incorrectly cited as Tempranillo synonyms. Genetic analysis revealed a high level of genetic similarity between Tempranillo accessions (SG >0.97), which could correspond to three highly related genotypes. This narrow genetic variation supports a monophyletic origin of Tempranillo, and could be the result of rapid multiplication and distribution of a very low number of clones.
Visceral leishmaniasis patients display altered composition and maturity of neutrophils as well as impaired neutrophil effector functions
Immunologically, active visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is characterised by profound immunosuppression, severe systemic inflammatory responses and an impaired capacity to control parasite replication. Neutrophils are highly versatile cells, which play a crucial role in the induction as well as the resolution of inflammation, the control of pathogen replication and the regulation of immune responses. Neutrophil functions have been investigated in human cutaneous leishmaniasis, however, their role in human visceral leishmaniasis is poorly understood. In the present study we evaluated the activation status and effector functions of neutrophils in patients with active VL and after successful anti-leishmanial treatment. Our results show that neutrophils are highly activated and have degranulated; high levels of arginase, myeloperoxidase and elastase, all contained in neutrophils’ granules, were found in the plasma of VL patients. In addition, we show that a large proportion of these cells are immature. We also analysed effector functions of neutrophils that are essential for pathogen clearance and show that neutrophils have an impaired capacity to release neutrophil extracellular traps, produce reactive oxygen species and phagocytose bacterial particles, but not Leishmania parasites. Our results suggest that impaired effector functions, increased activation and immaturity of neutrophils play a key role in the pathogenesis of VL
Proposal for SPS beam time for the baby MIND and TASD neutrino detector prototypes
The design, construction and testing of neutrino detector prototypes at CERN
are ongoing activities. This document reports on the design of solid state baby
MIND and TASD detector prototypes and outlines requirements for a test beam at
CERN to test these, tentatively planned on the H8 beamline in the North Area,
which is equipped with a large aperture magnet. The current proposal is
submitted to be considered in light of the recently approved projects related
to neutrino activities with the SPS in the North Area in the medium term

Matter profile effect in neutrino factory
We point out that the matter profile effect --- the effect of matter density
fluctuation on the baseline --- is very important to estimate the parameters in
a neutrino factory with a very long baseline. To make it clear, we propose the
method of the Fourier series expansion of the matter profile. By using this
method, we can take account of both the matter profile effect and its
ambiguity. For very long baseline experiment, such as L=7332km, in the analysis
of the oscillation phenomena we need to introduce a new parameter ---
the Fourier coefficient of the matter profile --- as a theoretical parameter to
deal with the matter profile effects.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figure
The role of matter density uncertainties in the analysis of future neutrino factory experiments
Matter density uncertainties can affect the measurements of the neutrino
oscillation parameters at future neutrino factory experiments, such as the
measurements of the mixing parameters and \deltacp. We compare
different matter density uncertainty models and discuss the possibility to
include the matter density uncertainties in a complete statistical analysis.
Furthermore, we systematically study in which measurements and where in the
parameter space matter density uncertainties are most relevant. We illustrate
this discussion with examples that show the effects as functions of different
magnitudes of the matter density uncertainties. We find that matter density
uncertainties are especially relevant for large \stheta \gtrsim 10^{-3}.
Within the KamLAND-allowed range, they are most relevant for the precision
measurements of \stheta and \deltacp, but less relevant for ``binary''
measurements, such as for the sign of \ldm, the sensitivity to \stheta, or
the sensitivity to maximal CP violation. In addition, we demonstrate that
knowing the matter density along a specific baseline better than to about 1%
precision means that all measurements will become almost independent of the
matter density uncertainties.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX. Final version to be published in Phys.
