Generating Levels That Teach Mechanics
The automatic generation of game tutorials is a challenging AI problem. While
it is possible to generate annotations and instructions that explain to the
player how the game is played, this paper focuses on generating a gameplay
experience that introduces the player to a game mechanic. It evolves small
levels for the Mario AI Framework that can only be beaten by an agent that
knows how to perform specific actions in the game. It uses variations of a
perfect A* agent that are limited in various ways, such as not being able to
jump high or see enemies, to test how failing to do certain actions can stop
the player from beating the level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, PCG Workshop at FDG 2018, 9th International

Assessment of processing technologies which may improve the nutritional composition of dairy products – Overview of progress
Among consumers there is a growing demand for food products with a natural nutritional-physiological advantage over comparable conventional products. As part of an EU funded project, ALP is examining the possible impact of processing on nutritionally valuable milk components, using the example of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA). The extent to which processing influences the CLA content of the end product was determined by literature research and own investigations of organic and conventional butter. Furthermore, new chemical, sensory-based and bio crystallization methods were evaluated by ALP and the University of Kassel to determine the oxidation stability of butter. In a further step the storage stability of CLA enriched and conventional butter was examined and the different methods will be compared. As a third objective a process for low-input CLA enrichment of milk fat (with a focus on alpine butter) has been developed. Since the process selected for the work is a physical enrichment process, it is accepted by international organic farming and food groups. Among the many benefits ascribed to CLA, it is believed to be an effective agent against cancer. The demand for foods with properties that promote human health is growing. The dairy industry has the opportunity to meet this demand by developing new dairy products with a nutritional-physiological function for the functional food market
Data-driven design : a case for maximalist game design
Maximalism in art refers to drawing on and combining
multiple different sources for art creation, embracing
the resulting collisions and heterogeneity. This paper
discusses the use of maximalism in game design
and particularly in data games, which are games that
are generated partly based on open data. Using Data
Adventures, a series of generators that create adventure
games from data sources such as Wikipedia and Open-
StreetMap, as a lens we explore several tradeoffs and
issues in maximalist game design. This includes the tension
between transformation and fidelity, between decorative
and functional content, and legal and ethical issues
resulting from this type of generativity. This paper
sketches out the design space of maximalist data-driven
games, a design space that is mostly unexplored.peer-reviewe
Statistical mechanics of a single particle in a multiscale random potential: Parisi landscapes in finite dimensional Euclidean spaces
We construct a N-dimensional Gaussian landscape with multiscale, translation
invariant, logarithmic correlations and investigate the statistical mechanics
of a single particle in this environment. In the limit of high dimension N>>1
the free energy of the system and overlap function are calculated exactly using
the replica trick and Parisi's hierarchical ansatz. In the thermodynamic limit,
we recover the most general version of the Derrida's Generalized Random Energy
Model (GREM). The low-temperature behaviour depends essentially on the spectrum
of length scales involved in the construction of the landscape. If the latter
consists of K discrete values, the system is characterized by a K-step Replica
Symmetry Breaking solution. We argue that our construction is in fact valid in
any finite spatial dimensions . We discuss implications of our results
for the singularity spectrum describing multifractality of the associated
Boltzmann-Gibbs measure. Finally we discuss several generalisations and open
problems, the dynamics in such a landscape and the construction of a
Generalized Multifractal Random Walk.Comment: 25 pages, published version with a few misprints correcte

Phase II trial of the oral platinum complex JM216 in non-small-cell lung cancer: An EORTC early clinical studies group investigation
Background JM216 is a new oral platinum complex with dose-limiting toxicity myelosuppresssion, now undergoing phase II evaluation. Patients and methods JM216 was evaluated as first line therapy in non-small-cell lung cancer. Seventeen patients received 120 mg/m2/day for five days repeated every three weeks. Results Toxicity was manageable, the commonest side-effects being nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and asthenia. Myelososuppression was generally grade <2 and there were no cases of neutropenic sepsis or bleeding. Thirteen patients were fully evaluable for response. No sustained objective responses were reported. One patient was reported as stable disease had a partial response after three courses but was progressing again after four. An additional five patients had stable disease (46.2%). Conclusions Although some patients may have had useful palliation, JM216 did not appear to have significant antitumour activity in non-small-cell lung cance
DATA Agent
This paper introduces DATA Agent, a system which creates murder
mystery adventures from open data. In the game, the player
takes on the role of a detective tasked with finding the culprit of
a murder. All characters, places, and items in DATA Agent games
are generated using open data as source content. The paper discusses
the general game design and user interface of DATA Agent,
and provides details on the generative algorithms which transform
linked data into different game objects. Findings from a user study
with 30 participants playing through two games of DATA Agent
show that the game is easy and fun to play, and that the mysteries
it generates are straightforward to solve.peer-reviewe
