    Refusing to Endorse. A must Explanation for Pejoratives.

    In her analysis of pejoratives, Eva Picardi rejects a too sharp separation between descriptive and expressive content. I reconstruct some of her arguments, endorsing Eva’s criticism of Williamson’s analysis of Dummett and developing a suggestion by Manuel Garcia Carpintero on a speech act analysis of pejoratives. Eva’s main concern is accounting for our instinctive refusal to endorse an assertion containing pejoratives because it suggests a picture of reality we do not share. Her stance might be further developed claiming that uses of pejoratives not only suggest, but also promote a wrong picture of reality. Our refusal to endorse implies rejecting not only a wrong picture of reality but also a call for participation to what that picture promotes

    Cu-exchanged 3D-printed geopolymer/ZSM-5 monolith for selective catalytic reduction of NOx

    Cu-exchanged zeolites with MFI structure, such as ZSM-5, represent effective catalysts for SCR processes when the application requires a good thermal stability under a wide range of temperature as for the after-treatment of exhaust gas from diesel engine. The production of zeolite in a structured form, mandatorily required for mobile applications, is quite complex due to the poor adhesion of the material. In this paper 3D-printed geopolymers containing about 37 % ZSM-5 are proposed as potentially structured catalysts for SCR applications. The production of the monolith and the pre-treatment necessary to introduce copper as active exchanged cation are investigated. The effect of pre-treatments on the physical and morphological structure of both geopolymer and zeolite and on the nature of copper introduced in the subsequent step was studied using characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, N2 physisorption and Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR)

    The guidelines for the osteoporosis management were first drafted by a working group and then critically evaluated by the board of SIOMMMS. The most relevant points are: Definition: Osteoporosis is defined as a quantitative and qualitative deterioration of bone tissue leading to increased risk of fracture. Postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis are defined as primitive. Diagnosis: The cornerstone for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA (dual-energy X-ray absortiometry) at the femoral neck with T-score values -2.5 is usually not justified. Pharmacological intervention: The use of drugs registered for the treatment of osteoporosis are recommended when the benefits overcome the risk. This is the case only when the risk of fracture is rather high. FRAX™ is recognized as a useful tool for easily estimate the long-term fracture risk. SIOMMMS with these guidelines is committed to validate and further develop this diagnostic tool

    Retweeting: its linguistic and epistemic value

    This paper analyses the communicative and epistemic value of retweeting (and more generally of reposting content on social media). Against a naĂŻve view, it argues that retweets are not acts of endorsement, motivating this diagnosis with linguistic data. Retweeting is instead modelled as a peculiar form of quotation, in which the reported content is indicated rather than reproduced. A relevance-theoretic account of the communicative import of retweeting is then developed, to spell out the complex mechanisms by which retweets achieve their communicative goals. The last section outlines the epistemic threats posed by the increasing prevalence of retweeting on social media, linking them to the low reputational, cognitive, and practical costs linked to this emerging form of communication

    Cu/zsm5-geopolymer 3d-printed monoliths for the nh3-scr of nox

    Geopolymer-based monoliths manufactured by direct ink writing, containing up to 60% by weight of presynthesized ZSM5 with low Si/Al ratio, were investigated as structured catalysts for the NH3-SCR of NOx. Copper was introduced as the active metal by ion exchange after a preliminary acid treatment of the monoliths. Monolithic catalysts were characterized by morphological (XRD and SEM), textural (BET and pore size distribution), mechanical (compressive strength), chemical (ICP–MS), redox (H2-TPR) and surface (NH3-TPD) analyses, showing the preservation of Cu-exchanged zeolite features in the composite monoliths. NH3-SCR tests, carried out on both monolithic and powdered samples in the temperature range 70–550 °C, confirmed that composite monoliths provide a very good activity and a high selectivity to N2 over the whole range of temperatures explored due to the hierarchical structure of the materials, in addition to a good mechanical resistance—mostly related to the geopolymer matrix

    A series of monometallic and bimetallic Cu/Mg oxide-based structured catalytic sorbents were synthesized by impregnation of extruded activated carbon honeycombs and tested for the purification of simulated biogas from H2S at room temperature. Dynamic H2S (100ppmv) removal tests were run at short contact time under moist conditions in the presence of O2 to compare sulfur capture capacities and to investigate kinetic aspects of the oxidation reactions involved in the mechanism at varying the composition of the active phase. Fresh, exhausted and thermally regenerated honeycomb catalytic sorbents were characterized by N2-adsorption, PSD, XPS, TG-MS to shed light on the specific nature of S-species formed upon catalytic oxidation, the maximum capacity and the efficacy of a simple thermal regeneration treatment at 600 °C. Under moist conditions, the surface chemistry resulted dominated by the basic nature of MgO, and bimetallic CuMg catalytic sorbents show fast H2S removal rates and large S-capacity coupled to easy and complete regenerability

    Allelic variants of human calcitonin receptor: distribution and association with bone mass in postmenopausal Italian women

    Bone mass could be under control of several polymorphic genes which can modulate bone turnover via reciprocal interactions. One of the genes that can be involved in this process is the calcitonin receptor (CTR) gene. Evidence from cDNA cloning has shown that CTRs have seven potential transmembrane domains and they are known to be expressed in several tissues. In a Japanese population was discovered a novel Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) at the CTR gene by Alu I restriction enzyme at the 1377th nucleotide expressing either proline (CC genotype) or leucine (TT genotype) as the 463rd amino acid. The heterozygote genotypes were indicated as TC. In the present study we analyzed the presence of this CTR gene RFLP in 307 postmenopausal Italian women. We observed that TC and TT genotypes represented the most frequent CTR genotypes in Italian women. In addition, Duncan's test used to compare the genotypes showed that TT genotype has significant lower lumbar BMD in comparison with CC genotype
