In finite element method which is one of the most widely used numerical analysis method of structural systems, forces and displacements are related by stiffness matrix. The aim of this study is to determine the stiffness matrix of plane frame element by experimentally. Experimental studies are performed in two stages. In the first stage, tensile tests are done to determine the mechanical properties of the specimens. In the second stage, coefficients of stiffness matrix is determined experimentally using Load and Boundary Conditions Box (LBCB) which has ability to generate displacements and rotations in six degree of freedom by applying unit displacements. Then the related coefficients of stiffness matrix is compared with theoretical ones and reasons of deviations are examined. According to the results, it is observed that the values of related coefficients are quite close to each other
Online Model Identification and Updating in Multi-Platform Pseudo-Dynamic Simulation of Steel Structures - Experimental Applications
A new technique is proposed for online model identification and updating in
multi-platform pseudo-dynamic simulation of steel structures which brings
novelty through eliminating the need for optimization during the identification
stage of material/section behavior. Furthermore, the proposed procedure
requires no prior information about the updated component of the
numerical substructure and free of backward inconsistency. The efficiency of
the proposed online model updating procedure is investigated by fourteen
simulations which have real physical experimental substructures. A three
span, small-scale bridge model with different pier heights is selected as the
investigated structure. The simulations are performed under two different
types of dynamic loads: instantaneous constant loading and strong ground
motion records. The repeatability of tests, the effects of strong ground
motion records and different pier heights are investigated. Furthermore
completely numerical dynamic analyses with advanced models are also
performed for comparison purposes. The results demonstrated that the
proposed online model identification and updating procedure can be used
with sufficient precision in multi-platform pseudo-dynamic simulations of
steel structures
yükleme tipi; i) anlık sabit yük, ii) sinüzoidal yük ve iii) deprem kaydı göz önüne alınmıştır.
Experimental tests for determining the seismic behavior of structures can classified under
three main types: i) shake table tests, ii) quasi-static tests and iii) pseudo dynamic tests.
Researches about pseudo-dynamic test methods are continuing especially on hybrid
simulation, distributed hybrid simulation, continuous simulation and real time simulation
subjects. The idea behind the hybrid pseudo-dynamic simulation is to divide the investigated
structure into substructures. Among these substructures, the ones which the seismic
behavior is well known, remain in the elastic limits or not suitable for physical tests due to
their geometrical dimensions are numerically modeled. On the other hand, the ones whose
seismic behavior is the main focus of the investigation and the ones in which the nonlinear
behavior is more governing are physically tested. However the most important disadvantage
of the hybrid pseudo-dynamic simulation occurs when the physically investigated
substructure repeats multiple times in the whole structure. The purpose of the online model updating in hybrid pseudo dynamic test is to update the
parameters in numerically modeled substructures according to the results obtained from
physically tested substructures during the hybrid simulation.
In this study, a new online model updating method for hybrid pseudo dynamic test is
proposed and the effectiveness is investigated. The developed non–iterative model updating
method uses extended Masing models for rotational springs. Also parametric experimental
studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of the parameters on the results and
the effectiveness of quasi static, pseudo dynamic, hybrid pseudo dynamic and online model
updating in hybrid pseudo dynamic test methods. In parametric studies; test reproducibility, monotonic and cyclic loading profile, time step
interval, damping, loading frequency, initial stiffness, alpha coefficient, number of repeated
numerical substructure, column (pier) height, ground motion record etc. effects are
investigated. Also three different load types; i) instantaneous constant load, ii) sinusoidal
load, and iii) earthquake load are considered.
As a result it is demonstrated that, the established hybrid pseudo dynamic test system works
within expected accuracy and effectiveness. Also it is showed that the proposed online
model updating method with extended Masing model enhance the hybrid pseudo dynamic
test results and bring closer the obtained solutions to the real solutions. The system is also
ready for investigating different online model updating procedures. Furthermore it is possible
to conduct distributed hybrid pseudo dynamic test with the current system

Konferans Bildirisi -- Teorik ve Uygulamalı Mekanik Türk Milli Komitesi, 2011Conference Paper -- Theoretical and Applied Mechanical Turkish National Committee, 2011Fonksiyonel derecelendirilmiş malzemeli ince plakların doğrusal olmayan dinamik davranışı karışık sonlu elemanlar yöntemi kullanılarak incelenmiştir.
Hybrid pseudo dynamic simulation is a technique that combines the advantages of mathematical modeling and laboratory tests. The structural system is separated into sub-structures. The components whose seismic behavior are well known, behave elastically or cannot be physically tested in the laboratory because of geometrical sizes are modelled mathematically. On the other hand, the components whose seismic behavior are the main focus of the research or behave non-linearly are tested physically in the laboratory. In the framework of this study a small-scaled, single story, single span plane frame is tested with hybrid pseudo-dynamic simulation in “Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Research Laboratory” of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University under Elcentro earthquake ground motion record. The results are compared with hybrid simulations having mathematical models only. According to the results of the simulations with physical specimens, the hybrid pseudo-dynamic simulation gives satisfactory results within the required precision
Effect of Time Step Interval and Time Integration Schemes in Pseudo-Dynamic Analysis
Pseudo Dynamic Analysis technique is an alternative method for exploring structural performance by combining
analytical and experimental investigation. Compared to shake table tests, it is a more economical method, and its
reliability has been proven over many years of the studies. The damage occurrence and process can be monitored
on the test sample due to experiments performed at low speeds. In this study, the behaviour of a single degree of
freedom, cantilever column system, under the effect of the pulse load and earthquake record was investigated
both numerically and experimentally using Pseudo Dynamic Analysis method. The effects of two different time
integration schemes and various time step interval values on analyses were examined in the investigations and
the results were compared. Numerical analyses were performed by α-operator splitting method and central
differences method, and experimental studies were performed by α-operator splitting method. In experimental
investigations, approximate results were obtained with numerical studies for certain values of the time step. At
small time interval values, experimental results deteriorated. It is purposed to determine the optimum time step
interval value that can be utilised in the Pseudo Dynamic Test method
