Translation and Translanguaging Pedagogies in Intercomprehension and Multilingual Teaching
Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. Since our students are constantly moving between English and one or more Romance language(s), they actively bring the other Romance languages they are learning into the translingual repertoire they already practice through the multilingual learning strategies deployed in intercomprehension.
Infrared Observations During the Secondary Eclipse of HD 209458b: I. 3.6-Micron Occultation Spectroscopy Using the VLT
We search for an infrared signature of the transiting extrasolar planet HD
209458b during secondary eclipse. Our method, which we call `occultation
spectroscopy,' searches for the disappearance and reappearance of weak spectral
features due to the exoplanet as it passes behind the star and later reappears.
We argue that at the longest infrared wavelengths, this technique becomes
preferable to conventional `transit spectroscopy'. We observed the system in
the wing of the strong nu-3 band of methane near 3.6 microns during two
secondary eclipses, using the VLT/ISAAC spectrometer at a spectral resolution
of 3300. Our analysis, which utilizes a model template spectrum, achieves
sufficient precision to expect detection of the spectral structure predicted by
an irradiated, low-opacity (cloudless), low-albedo, thermochemical equilibrium
model for the exoplanet atmosphere. However, our observations show no evidence
for the presence of this spectrum from the exoplanet, with the statistical
significance of the non-detection depending on the timing of the secondary
eclipse, which depends on the assumed value for the orbital eccentricity. Our
results reject certain specific models of the atmosphere of HD 209458b as
inconsistent with our observations at the 3-sigma level, given assumptions
about the stellar and planetary parameters.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures Accepted to Astrophysical Journa

HIV test uptake among MSM in China: Implications for enhanced HIV test promotion campaigns among key populations
Despite global efforts to increase HIV test uptake among men who have sex with men (MSM), social stigma and negative attitudes toward homosexuality hinder the effectiveness of traditional test promotion campaigns. Increasing HIV test uptake requires greater understanding of the conditions that facilitate decisions to get tested. We conducted an online survey hosted by two of the most highly frequented MSM web portals in China. A generalised ordered logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine factors associated with HIV testing behaviour. Compared to men who had never tested for HIV, men who had tested in the past year were more likely to have never engaged in sex with women, have multiple male sex partners in the past 3 months and have disclosed their sexual orientation to others. MSM found testing at local Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (80.7%), gay men’s community-based organisations (80.2%) and public hospitals (70.9%) to be acceptable, while saunas (50.5%) and gay bars (41.8%) were found to be unacceptable testing venues. Our study shows that MSM in China prefer to test at venues that guarantee confidentiality, quality and quick results. Our study also suggests that self-testing may be a feasible approach to increase test uptake
A review of sensorless control in induction machines using HF injection and test vectors
This paper describes various methods aimed at
tracking the flux and rotor position for cage induction machines
without a shaft sensor using specially designed saliencies or
natural saliencies. The estimation methods employ a High
Frequency (HF) signal or test vectors to detect the machine
saliency. As is common knowledge, multiple saliences can cause
problems to track only one particular saliency. Ways to
overcome this problem for rotor position and rotor flux tracking
are discussed. The performance of these methods is investigated
at all loads at low and zero speed and also at zero fundamental
frequency.peer-reviewe
Linking young men who have sex with men (YMSM) to STI physicians: a nationwide cross-sectional survey in China.
BACKGROUND: Many young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are reluctant to seek health services and trust local physicians. Online information seeking may encourage YMSM to identify and see trustworthy physicians, obtain sexual health services, and obtain testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study examined online STI information seeking behaviors among Chinese YMSM and its association with offline physician visits. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide online survey among YMSM through WeChat, the largest social media platform in China. We collected information on individual demographics, sexual behaviors, online STI information seeking, offline STI testing, and STI physician visits. We examined the most commonly used platforms (search engines, governmental websites, counseling websites, generic social media, gay mobile apps, and mobile medical apps) and their trustworthiness. We assessed interest and willingness to use an MSM-friendly physician finder function embedded within a gay mobile app. Logistic regression models were used to examine the correlation between online STI information searching and offline physician visits. RESULTS: A total of 503 men completed the survey. Most men (425/503, 84.5%) searched for STI information online. The most commonly used platform to obtain STI information were search engines (402/425, 94.5%), followed by gay mobile apps (201/425, 47.3%). Men reported high trustworthiness of information received from gay mobile apps. Men also reported high interest (465/503, 92.4%) and willingness (463/503, 92.0%) to use a MSM-friendly physician finder function within such apps. Both using general social media (aOR =1.14, 95%CI: 1.04-1.26) and mobile medical apps (aOR =1.16, 95%CI: 1.01-1.34) for online information seeking were associated with visiting a physician. CONCLUSION: Online STI information seeking is common and correlated with visiting a physician among YMSM. Cultivating partnerships with the emerging mobile medical apps may be useful for disseminating STI information and providing better physician services to YMSM

Implementing a Negative Pressure Isolation Space within a Skilled Nursing Facility to Control SARS-CoV- 2 Transmission
Background: Isolation space must be expanded during pandemics involving airborne transmission. Little to no work has been done to establish optimal design strategies and implementation plans to ease surge capacity and expand isolation capacity over long periods in congregate living facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic has an airborne transmission component and requires isolation, which is difficult to accomplish in skilled nursing facilities.
Purpose: In this study we designed, implemented, and validated an isolation space at a skilled nursing facility in Lancaster, PA. The overall goal was to minimize disease transmission betweenresidents and staff within the facility.
Basic Procedures: We created an isolation space by modifying an existing HVAC system of the SNF. We measured pressure on-site and performed computational fluid dynamics and Lagrangian particle-based modeling to test containment and possible transmission extent given the isolation space is considered negative rather than individual rooms.
Main Findings: Pressure data shows the isolation space maintained an average hourly value of (standard deviation) -2.3 Pa (0.12 Pa) pressure differential between it and the external hallway connected to the rest of the facility. No transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between residents isolated to the space occurred, nor did any transmission to the staff or other residents occur. The isolation space was successfully implemented and, as of writing, continues to be operational through the pandemic.</p
Diagnostic Image Quality Assessment and Classification in Medical Imaging: Opportunities and Challenges
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suffers from several artifacts, the most
common of which are motion artifacts. These artifacts often yield images that
are of non-diagnostic quality. To detect such artifacts, images are
prospectively evaluated by experts for their diagnostic quality, which
necessitates patient-revisits and rescans whenever non-diagnostic quality scans
are encountered. This motivates the need to develop an automated framework
capable of accessing medical image quality and detecting diagnostic and
non-diagnostic images. In this paper, we explore several convolutional neural
network-based frameworks for medical image quality assessment and investigate
several challenges therein.Comment: 4 pages, 8 Figures, Conference Submissio
High Adult Sex Ratios and Risky Sexual Behaviors: A Systematic Review
BackgroundThirty-four countries worldwide have abnormally high sex ratios (>102 men per 100 women), resulting in over 100 million missing women. Widespread sex selective abortion, neglect of young girls leading to premature mortality, and gendered migration have contributed to these persistent and increasing distortions. Abnormally high adult sex ratios in communities may drive sexually transmitted disease (STD) spread where women are missing and men cannot find stable partners. We systematically reviewed evidence on the association between high community sex ratios and individual sexual behaviors. Methods and FindingsSeven databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Sociological Abstracts, and PopLINE) were searched without restrictions on time or location. We followed PRISMA guidelines and evaluated quality according to STROBE criteria. 1093 citations were identified and six studies describing 57,054 individuals were included for review. All six studies showed an association between high community sex ratios and individual sexual risk behaviors. In high sex ratio communities, women were more likely to have multiple sex partners and men were more likely to delay first sexual intercourse and purchase sex. Only two studies included STD outcomes.ConclusionsHigh community sex ratios were associated with increased individual sexual risk behavior among both men and women. However, none of the studies examined unprotected sex or appropriately adjusted for gendered migration. Further studies are needed to understand the effect of community sex ratios on sexual health and to inform comprehensive STD control interventions
