    COLLABORATIVE VALIDATION OF USER-CONTRIBUTED DATA USING A GEOSPATIAL BLOCKCHAIN APPROACH: THE SIMILE CASE STUDY

    Abstract. Internet decentralization nowadays represents a critical topic to be addressed. It protects the users' privacy, promotes data ownership, eliminates single points of failure and data censorship. An element that has an important role in decentralization is blockchain technology. Although blockchain has revolutionised sectors like the financial one with Bitcoin, there are still some fields where it needs to be further developed. One of these is geospatial data sharing and citizen science, where features like decentralization, immutability and transparency are needed. This study focuses on the description of a decentralized application developed specifically for geospatial data-point sharing and validation. As an example, the Informative System for the Integrated Monitoring of Insubric Lakes and their Ecosystems (SIMILE) is used. This application is developed in the Velas blockchain infrastructure and implements a combination of a Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) with smart contracts. Two types of smart contracts were created, a cell and a registry smart contract. The cell smart contracts are individual for each DGGS partition and contain the list of observations present in a specific area. The registry smart contracts keep track of all the DGGS cells added to the system. Currently, SIMILE observations are validated by public authorities, which requires time that is not always available. Therefore, a fully working prototype was developed to solve this. Here users can add and manage personal observations and validate the ones belonging to other users. This work demonstrates the feasibility of creating decentralized applications for geographical data validation as a citizen science solution

    Overview of the CLEF-2019 Checkthat! LAB: Automatic identification and verification of claims. Task 2: Evidence and factuality

    We present an overview of Task 2 of the second edition of the CheckThat! Lab at CLEF 2019. Task 2 asked (A) to rank a given set of Web pages with respect to a check-worthy claim based on their usefulness for fact-checking that claim, (B) to classify these same Web pages according to their degree of usefulness for fact-checking the target claim, (C) to identify useful passages from these pages, and (D) to use the useful pages to predict the claim's factuality. Task 2 at CheckThat! provided a full evaluation framework, consisting of data in Arabic (gathered and annotated from scratch) and evaluation based on normalized discounted cumulative gain (nDCG) for ranking, and F1 for classification. Four teams submitted runs. The most successful approach to subtask A used learning-to-rank, while different classifiers were used in the other subtasks. We release to the research community all datasets from the lab as well as the evaluation scripts, which should enable further research in the important task of evidence-based automatic claim verification

    The electron beam induced electronic transport in primary alkyl amine-intercalated V2O5 nanotubes is investigated where the organic amine molecules are employed as molecular conductive wires to an aminosilanized substrate surface and contacted to Au interdigitated electrode contacts. The results demonstrate that the high conductivity of the nanotubes is related to the non-resonant tunnelling through the amine molecules and a reduced polaron hopping conduction through the vanadium oxide itself. Both nanotube networks and individual nanotubes exhibit similarly high conductivities where the minority carrier transport is bias dependent and nanotube diameter invariant

    This paper overviews 18 plagiarism detectors that have been developed and evaluated within PAN'10. We start with a unified retrieval process that summarizes the best practices employed this year. Then, the detectors' performances are evaluated in detail, highlighting several important aspects of plagiarism detection, such as obfuscation, intrinsic vs. external plagiarism, and plagiarism case length. Finally, all results are compared to those of last year's competition

    The 1st International Competition on Plagiarism Detection, held in conjunction with the 3rd PAN workshop on Uncovering Plagiarism, Authorship, and Social Software Misuse, brought together researchers from many disciplines around the exciting retrieval task of automatic plagiarism detection. The competition was divided into the subtasks external plagiarism detection and intrinsic plagiarism detection, which were tackled by 13 participating groups. An important by-product of the competition is an evaluation framework for plagiarism detection, which consists of a large-scale plagiarism corpus and detection quality measures. The framework may serve as a unified test environment to compare future plagiarism detection research. In this paper we describe the corpus design and the quality measures, survey the detection approaches developed by the participants, and compile the achieved performance results of the competitors

    The purpose of the research is to expose the nature that, in matters of law and social policy, justifies promoting the elaboration and adoption of a regulatory framework that favors the use of renewable energy sources, for the generation of electricity through case analysis in the Province of ManabĂ­. For the accomplishment of the research study has taken into account a brief theoretical analysis on the fundamentals of the regulatory doctrine, where it exposes the conceptual framework of the law and its necessity for the good development of the social relations that derive from the use of the Renewable sources of energy. A study was carried out of the specific regulatory work carried out at the International level, in order to promote the adequate use of renewable energies, as well as a national study presenting an initial vision for the study and establishment of a specific regulatory framework for the case study of the province of ManabĂ­, as well as a group of policies and support measures that could be adopted to promote the integrated use of renewable energy sources and their contribution to the national energy matrix

    In the Iberian Peninsula, five official languages co-exist: Basque, Catalan,Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. Fostering multi-linguality and establishingstrong links among the linguistic resources developed for each language of theregion is essential. Additionally, a lack of published resources in some of theselanguages exists. Such lack propitiates a strong inter-relation between themand higher resourced languages, such as English and Spanish.In order to favour the intra-relation among the peninsular languages as wellas the inter-relation between them and foreign languages, different purposemultilingual NLP tools need to be developed.Interesting topics to beresearched include, among others, analysis of parallel and comparable corpora,development of multilingual resources, and language analysis in bilingualenvironments and within dialectal variations.With the aim of solving these tasks, statistical, linguistic and hybrid ap-proaches are proposed. Therefore, the workshop addresses researchers fromdifferent fields of natural language processing/computational linguistics: textmining, machine learning, pattern recognition, information retrieval andmachine translation.The research in this proceedings includes work in all of the official languages ofthe Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, interactions with English are also included.Wikipedia has shown to be an interesting resource for different tasks and hasbeen analysed or exploited in some contributions.Most of the regions of the Peninsula are represented by the authors of thecontributions. The distribution is as follows: Basque Country (2 authors),Catalonia (7 authors), Galicia (4 authors), Portugal (2 authors) and Valencia(5 authors). Interestingly, those regions where Spanish is the only officiallanguage are not represented. It is worth noting that authors working beyondthe Peninsula have also contributed to this workshop, including: Argentina (3authors), Finland (1 author), France (2 authors), Mexico (1 author), Singapore(1 author), and USA (6 authors)

    A service-learning experience in a free medical centre for undocumented migrants and homeless people

    Background: Service-learning experiences, informed by the realities of poverty and marginalization, are important for the education of future health professionals in order to commit them to tackling health inequalities and working with underserved populations. At the Caritas Medical Centre for undocumented migrants and homeless in Rome, students obtain an educational experience of service. The aim of this study is to try to measure the long-term impact of this experience on the professional and life choices of the student participants. Methods: A questionnaire was designed and distributed by email to all 19–29 years old participants in the experience. Responses were collected and analysed in a quantitative descriptive way and in a qualitative way using the knowledge, skills and attitudes model. Results: One hundred and seven students responded from the total 763 questionnaires distributed. Ninety-five percent of participants expressed a very high overall satisfaction, 93% declared that the experience influenced his/her future personal choices, and 84% found that the experience influenced their professional choices. Results were arranged into 6 categories of comments: knowledge about the realities of migration, poverty, and marginalization; relational skills; collaborative skills; attitudes towards migrants, poor people and others; Attitudes towards future professions; Attitudes towards life. A final category was listed with self-reflective questions related to the experience. Conclusion: This research shows the importance of service-learning experiences made during academic studies from young students of medicine and other faculties. Developing a relationship with marginalized and homeless people, within a voluntary service setting, can influence the future professional and personal choices of students. Universities should recognize the value of such experiences and establish partnerships with non-profit organizations to allow future health professionals to confront health inequities and commit themselves to their reduction
