According to the modern human capital theory, the learning process is assuming a central role for a country development. Therefore, it is very important to encourage an active and conscious learning. This paper shows the case of the National Olympic of Statistics, that is an initiative to improve statistic reasoning in the Second Grade Middle School. In particular, it has been analyzed, through Item Response Theory models, only one of the competition questionnaires. The aim of this work is to provide a critical review of the questionnaire and to highlight the importance of using statistical methods in evaluation processes

Burnout, learning and self-esteem at school: an empirical study

It is assumed that the level of school performance increases if the student has a good idea of self-esteem as well as his abilities, capabilities and skills in general. This paper investigates the relationship between level of self-esteem and school performance. The study, related to a survey conducted on a group of students aged from eight to thirteen, also aims to understand if the level of burnout of teachers influences the self-esteem and school performance of students. The causal relationships among the variables are investigated through a structural equation model (SEM)

Best practices to improve the learnig of statistics: the case of the National Olympics of Statistic in Italy

The modern economic theories consider human capital as a key factor for the long-term growth of a nation. In an educational contest a way to invest in human capital is to promote events that stimulate students to use communication technologies and to learn scientific reasoning. Therefore the Italian Statistical Society (SIS) support the National Olympics of Statistics, involving the second grade middle schools.
