The cupmarks as diachronic phenomenon linked to the territory: the Trentino Alto - Adige
Val d'Isarco; Val Pusteria; Val Badia; Valle dell'Adige.
La tipometri a è piuttosto articolata: coppelle singole, multiple, canalett e, croci, trie, geometrie, vaschette, piedi, ecc. A volte
The first archaeological spatial analyses were bidimensional and they didn’t take into account the environmental
and morphological characteristics that might influence the length of paths or the spatial relationships
between features. This approach is particularly misleading in a mountain environment where the difference
in altitude between two points in the landscape is more constrictive than the “air distance”. Though the
current technological means allow us to deal with these methodological issues, there are still a lot of studies
that calculate the distance between two features as the simple minimum distance between two points. In this
paper two archaeological case studies from Trentino province are proposed, in order to verify if the linear distances
are so misleading in an Alpine environment, as previously suggested. The first one is a medium-scale
case study (the whole Trentino), where the linear distances from locations have been compared with the least
cost paths. The second one is a big-scale case study (Val di Fiemme), where the linear distances and the morphology-
calibrated distances between upland pastoral sites (malghe) and upland lakes have been statistically
evaluated. These two examples have confirmed that, in a mountain environment (and at regional scale), the
interpretation of movements and spatial relationships in an “euclidean” framework is fundamentally incorrect.
Therefore, they suggest that the cost-surface estimation of a sample area is an unavoidable step for the interpretation
of mobility and settlement strategies in the Alps
Active Expert Learning for the Digital Humanities
Current platforms for paper sharing among scholars, such as Research Gate, could support Active Expert Learning, whereby the paper being uploaded is processed using human language technology techniques, and feedback is asked of the scholar doing the upload using active learning techniques to minimize the amount of feedback requested. We show that this approach could outperform traditional active learning as well as randomly asking for feedback
The Moscerini cave is located in northern Latium along the Fiora river, in an area known as Don Simone locality. The site has been identified during an archaeological survey carried out in 2019. The preliminary results of the first stratigraphic investigation conducted at the entrance of the cave in 2021 are presented in the paper. The upper part of the deposit can be dated back to the modern period, thanks to scarce material culture recovered. A hearth has been uncovered at the top of a concentration of material culture: impasto pottery sherds, pebbles – some of them showing use traces –, fragments of speleothems and some knapped flint tool. At the entrance of the cave the area around the fire place has been organized as walking surface (presence of fine sediments and small artifacts) and the deposit below as drainage arrangement (stones, speleothems fragments, pebbles). The material culture found fits into the repertoire of the Early Rinaldone facies, referring to the Early Copper Age (3700-3300 BC). The deposit, still under excavation, appears different from the typical Rinaldone assemblage of grave goods and more similar to a household (or ritual?) context
The beginning of the Neolithic in the Po Plain (northern Italy): Problems and perspectives
The Po Valley is one of the major physiographic units of northern Italy. It can be considered as a key area
for the interpretation of long-term historical events and processes because of its location midway between
the Mediterranean world and continental Europe. This paper is an updated summary of our
knowledge of the Early Neolithic farming communities of the region. In particular it discusses data
derived from radiocarbon dated sites. Its aim is to provide the international audience with an updated
view of the topic, based on the discussion of a new series of AMS radiocarbon results, to frame the
earliest producing communities of the Po Valley into the more general picture of the Neolithization of
Italy. To achieve the goal, apart from radiocarbon assays, we have taken into consideration material
culture remains, subsistence economy, environmental resources, and data gathered from archaeometric
analyses and technology
