    Exact methods for the traveling salesman problem with multiple drones

    Drone delivery is drawing increasing attention in last-mile delivery. Effective solution methods to solve decision-making problems arising in drone delivery allow to run and assess drone delivery systems. In this paper, we focus on delivery systems with a single traditional vehicle and multiple drones working in tandem to fulfill customer requests. We address the Traveling Salesman Problem with Multiple Drones (TSP-MD) and investigate the modeling challenges posed by the presence of multiple drones, which have proven to be hard to handle in the literature. We propose a compact Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to formulate the TSP-MD and several families of valid inequalities. Moreover, we illustrate an exact decomposition approach based on the compact MILP and a branch-and-cut algorithm. We show that this exact approach can solve instances with up to 24 customers to proven optimality, improving upon existing exact methods that can solve similar problems with up to ten customers only

    Electron irradiation: from test to material tayloring

    In this article, we report some examples of how high-energy electron irradiation can be used as a tool for shaping material properties turning the generation of point-defects into an advantage beyond the presumed degradation of the properties. Such an approach is radically different from what often occurs when irradiation is used as a test for radiation hard materials or devices degradation in harsh environments. We illustrate the potential of this emerging technique by results obtained on two families of materials, namely semiconductors and superconductors

    Comparison between two treatment protocols with recombinant Human Erythropoietin (rHuEpo) in the treatment of late anemia in neonates with Rh-Isoimmunization

    Objectve. The Rh-hemolytic disease can lead to a late anemia by hemolytic and hyporigenerative mechanism. We compared the effectiveness of rHuEPO in two care protocols that differ for doses of rHuEPO administrated and for timing of administration. Methods. A cohort of 14 neonates was investigated. The neonates were treated with two different protocols. Protocol A: a dose of 200 U/kg/day of rHuEpo administered subcutaneously starting from the end of the second week of life; Protocol B: a dose of 400 U/kg/day of rHuEpo administered subcutaneously starting from the end of the first week of life. Results. The hematocrit values in the protocol A group decreased during treatment (32,5% vs 25,2%), whereas the hematocrit value in protocol B group remained almost stable (38,7% vs 42,8%). The mean numbers of platelets remained stable in both groups while neutrophils increased in protocol A group and decreased in protocol B (p<0,05). Reticulocyte count increased during treatment in both groups, although only in protocol B group it was statistically significative (p<0,05). Conclusions. Our results suggest a similar efficacy between the two treatment protocols. Increasing doses of rHuEPO do not seem enhancing their effectiveness and the incidence of side effects

    In-vivo evaluations of bone regenerative potential of two novel bioactive glasses

    : Due to the aging of population, materials able to repair damaged tissues are needed. Among others, bioactive glasses (BGs) have attracted a lot of interest due to their outstanding properties both for hard and soft tissues. Here, for the first time, two new BGs, which gave very promising results in preliminary in vitro-tests, were implanted in animals in order to evaluate their regenerative potential. The new BGs, named BGMS10 and Bio_MS and containing specific therapeutic ions, were produced in granules and implanted in rabbits' femurs for up to 60 days, to test their biocompatibility and osteoconduction. Additionally, granules of 45S5 Bioglass® were employed and used as a standard reference for comparison. The results showed that, after 30 days, the two novel BGs and 45S5 displayed a similar behavior, in terms of bone amount, thickness of new bone trabeculae and affinity index. On the contrary, after 60 days, 45S5 granules were mainly surrounded by wide and scattered bone trabeculae, separated by large amounts of soft tissue, while in BGMS10 and Bio_MS the trabeculae were thin and uniformly distributed around the BG granules. This latter scenario could be considered as more advantageous, since the features of the two novel BG granules allowed for the neo-formation of a uniformly distributed bony trabeculae, predictive of more favorable mechanical behavior, compared to the less uniform coarse trabeculae, separated by large areas of soft tissue in 45S5 granules. Thus, BGMS10 and Bio_MS could be considered suitable products for tissue regeneration in the orthopedic and dental fields.Due to the aging of population, materials able to repair damaged tissues are needed.     Glycerol Carbonate as a Versatile Alkylating Agent for the Synthesis of β-Aryloxy Alcohols

    The possibility to use glycerol carbonate (GlyC) as an innovative alkylating agent for phenolic compounds in solventless conditions and in the presence of a catalytic amount of both homogeneous and heterogeneous bases is herein described. In particular, the peculiar, polyfunctional structure of GlyC allows one to obtain the formation not only of the mono-phenoxy-1,2-propanediol (MPP) analogue but also of 1,3-diphenoxy-2-propanol (DPP), the latter being elusive using the more traditional, toxic, and carcinogenic reagents such as glycidol and/or 3-chloro-1,2-propandiol. The production of DPP is indeed possible due to the in situ formation of a reactive intermediate, 4-(phenoxy)methyl-1,3-dioxolane-2-one (PhOGlyC), which may undergo a consecutive nucleophilic attack of a phenolate, leading to the selective formation of the disubstituted product. This reaction is nonetheless in competition with PhOGlyC decarboxylation that finally limits DPP yield up to 20%, with an MPP yield up to roughly 60% in the optimized conditions (atmospheric pressure, 140 degrees C, 5 h using Cs2CO3 as the basic catalyst) starting directly from a GlyC/phenolic mixture. For this reason, a multistep synthetic strategy has also been developed, first by obtaining the quantitative formation and isolation of the PhOGlyC intermediate and then by promoting the consecutive reaction with phenol, in this way obtaining a DPP yield of 66% after only 1 h of reaction at 170 degrees C. The obtained phenyl glyceryl ethers are interesting drugs scaffolds (i.e., guaifenesin, mephenesin), intermediates in the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (e.g., chlorphenesin carbamate, methocarbamol), and hydrotropic solvents; preliminary evaluations of MPP and DPP biodegradability and use as alternative surfactants have also been described in this paper

    Electron irradiation effects on superconductivity in PdTe2_2: an application of a generalized Anderson theorem

    Low temperature (∼\sim 20~K) electron irradiation with 2.5 MeV relativistic electrons was used to study the effect of controlled non-magnetic disorder on the normal and superconducting properties of the type-II Dirac semimetal PdTe2_2. We report measurements of longitudinal and Hall resistivity, thermal conductivity and London penetration depth using tunnel-diode resonator technique for various irradiation doses. The normal state electrical resistivity follows Matthiessen rule with an increase of the residual resistivity at a rate of ∼\sim0.77μΩ \mu \Omegacm/(C/cm2)(\textrm{C}/\textrm{cm}^2). London penetration depth and thermal conductivity results show that the superconducting state remains fully gapped. The superconducting transition temperature is suppressed at a non-zero rate that is about sixteen times slower than described by the Abrikosov-Gor'kov dependence, applicable to magnetic impurity scattering in isotropic, single-band ss-wave superconductors. To gain information about the gap structure and symmetry of the pairing state, we perform a detailed analysis of these experimental results based on insight from a generalized Anderson theorem for multi-band superconductors. This imposes quantitative constraints on the gap anisotropies for each of the possible pairing candidate states. We conclude that the most likely pairing candidate is an unconventional A1g+−A_{1g}^{+-} state. While we cannot exclude the conventional A1g++A_{1g}^{++} and the triplet A1uA_{1u}, we demonstrate that these states require additional assumptions about the orbital structure of the disorder potential to be consistent with our experimental results, e.g., a ratio of inter- to intra-band scattering for the singlet state significantly larger than one. Due to the generality of our theoretical framework, we think that it will also be useful for irradiation studies in other spin-orbit-coupled multi-orbital systems.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure

    Análise da estrutura populacional de ovinos deslanados do núcleo de conservação.

    Resumo: Este estudo analisou a estrutura populacional de ovinos deslanados do núcleo de conservação do estado do Ceará, Brasil. Os parâmetros populacionais foram estimados com base nos dados genealógicos de indivíduos das raças Santa Inês (SI), Somalis (SO) e Morada Nova (MN), nascidos entre os anos de 2001 e 2014. Os parâmetros estimados foram: número de gerações completas equivalentes (GCE), intervalo entre gerações (IEG), número de fundadores (Nf), número efetivo de fundadores (fe), número efetivo de ancestrais (fa), coeficiente de endogamia (F) e índice de contribuição genética (ICG). O GCE médio foi de 1,82, 2,78 e 1,52 para SI, SO e MN, respectivamente. O IEG foi próximo entre as raças, 3,67 anos em média. O Nf para SI, SO e MN foi igual a 225, 194 e 153, respectivamente. As razões fe/fa foram distantes de 1 nas três populações, o que indica ocorrência de gargalo genético, principalmente para SO. Os coeficientes médios de endogamia foram de 1,81%, 0,78% e 0,78% para SI, SO e MN, respectivamente. O ICG foi de 3,32, 5,38 e 2,87 para SI, SO e MN, respectivamente. Os parâmetros populacionais estimados apontam que parte da genética original desses rebanhos foi perdida, principalmente na população da raça Somalis. Abstracts: This study evaluated the population structure of sheep without wool from the conservation nucleus in Ceará State, Brazil.
