    “Bist du Jugoslawe oder was? Ich bin das Oder Was”: Topographie der Traumata in Vladimir Vertlibs "Zwischenstationen"

    War, migration and violence are all traumatic events that can trigger mental or physical trauma, especially in childhood and adolescence. There are many ways to overcome trauma. When writing down personal traumas some German authors have tried to bring their emotional and physical wounds on to paper as a method of coping with them. This way of "healing" was also chosen by the Austrian writer of Russian Jewish origin, Vladimir Vertlib, who tells of the odyssey of a Soviet-Jewish immigrant family on their way to the West in his book "Zwischenstationen". This paper discusses concepts of trauma research in literature, then moves to a broad outline of trauma in relation to contemporary German migration literature considered and their portrayal of cities as places of memory. The paper later focuses on the topics and motives readers find in Vertlib’s novels in order to demonstrate the relevance of his work for the portrayal of trauma, its relation with the city as a place of traumatic processes, and the healing power of writing for collective memory

    The Mill: Analysis of the Original Score and Film

    The Mill is an original film and music performance piece chronicling the history of the steel industry in the United States, with specific connections to Pittsburgh. In addition to scoring the project, I designed the sound and produced the film and music and also shot and edited the film. About eighty percent of the film material is historical footage (in black and white, as well as color), while I shot the remaining portions, on location, in various areas of the Mon Valley region of Pittsburgh. Separated into four distinct sections, the film portrays the rise, the zenith and the eventual collapse of the steel industry in the late 1970s and the early 1980s from its epicenter in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. The musical score is composed of two elements: a live performance ensemble consisting of a clarinet in B flat, a flute and piano; and an electronic soundtrack that mostly supports the live instrumentation but also, at times, creates ambiguity between what is heard live and what is pre-recorded. I also created the ambient sound design and Foley effects. The purpose of this document is to closely examine the various stages in the creative process of The Mill, to describe the inception of the idea, the implementation of technology and the overall aesthetics of a multimedia production. Although the project was intended to be solely a musical film piece, the final product resulted in an educational quasi-documentary The document is divided into seven chapters, each describing the techniques and tools utilized to achieve the final product

    E-learninng Spaces for Teaching German as a Foreign Language. This contribution, which takes into account the online didactic affordances in a German Language and Translation course for university students, is divided into two parts: the former focuses on the potential of the chat as a didactic tool; the latter shows the activities performed on an e-learning platform during a German Language and Translation course. Specifically, attention will focus on examples of chat interaction, error correction and concrete teaching activities – supplemented by targeted use of corpora and digital lexicographic resources – involving forms of fixation and memorization, while leaving room for reasoned, creative and conscious forms of autonomy

    Family Engagement and Education: A Research Scan and Recommendations

    In September 2012, The Heinz Endowments asked the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (AISR) at Brown University to conduct a research scan of family engagement, leadership, and organizing work related to education happening in Pittsburgh, as a part of the Endowments' larger work in supporting families as important stakeholders in their children's education. Annenberg's goal was to produce a well-researched scan and analysis of the family engagement and organizing for school reform landscape in Pittsburgh and to provide recommendations for viable funding strategies to support family engagement and organizing capacity building. Research questions for the scan included:1. Given the overall context of school reform efforts in Pittsburgh, what are the opportunities and challenges for influence from community-based parent leadership and organizing?2. What community-based organizations with a current or potential focus on equitable education reform exist in Pittsburgh?3. What is the capacity of each organization to engage in parent/family leadership and organizing work to influence school reform?All of the work completed for this report was done from September 2012 through April 2013. More specifically, data was collected from November 2012 through February 2013. Thus, new developments and changes related to what is reported here that have occurred since the spring of 2013 are not reflected in our data, findings, analysis, or recommendations.What follows is an overview of the methodology and conceptual framework driving the design and analysis of our scan research, a detailed summary of what we learned about the landscape for family engagement and leadership in Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS), a scan of current community-based organizations' (CBOs) work and capacity for supporting family engagement and leadership, and recommendations of potential strategies for cultivating family engagement and education organizing in Pittsburgh

    Photoionization mass spectrometry of ω-phenylalkylamines: Role of radical cation-π interaction

    Linear ω-phenylalkylamines of increasing alkyl chain length have been investigated employing synchrotron radiation in the photon energy range from 7 to 15 eV. These molecules have received considerable interest because they bear the skeleton of biologically relevant compounds including neurotransmitters and because of the possible interaction between the amino moiety and the phenyl ring. Recently, the contribution of this interaction has been assayed in both neutral and protonated species, pointing to a role of the polymethylene chain length. In this work, the ionization energy (IE) values of benzylamine (BA), 2-phenylethylamine (2-PEA), 3-phenylpropylamine (3-PPA), and 4-phenylbutylamine (4-PBA) were investigated in order to ascertain the impact of the different alkyl chain lengths and to verify an amino radical cation-π interaction. The IEs obtained experimentally, 8.54, 8.37, 8.29, and 8.31 eV for BA, 2-PEA, 3-PPA and 4-PBA, respectively, show a decreasing trend that is discussed employing calculations at the CBS-QB3 level. Moreover, the appearance energy values for major fragments produced by the photofragmentation process are reported
