    The burning questions about Hluhluwe : causes and consequences of a severe wildfire

    The biophysical drivers of fire; ignition, fire weather conditions, fuel biomass, and flammability, differ in varying ecosystems. The rates of occurrence of these factors influence fire regimes. This study investigated the causes and consequences of a severe wildfire that swept through the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal South Africa in September 2008. This fire was an extreme event that seems only to have been possible due to the combination of circumstances that occurred in the days prior to and during the 14th/15th September 2008. The event was considered extreme because it burnt from savanna into thicket and forest patches, which is atypical of fires. The fire caused large structural change in tree demography, however, not much change in densities. The results of this study indicate that coupled weather conditions conducive to fire; namely low relative humidity, high temperatures and high wind speeds, occurred at the time of the fire. The synergistic influences of fire weather conditions and the state of available fuel caused this severe fire. The fire continued to bum for 48 hours before weather conditions relaxed and became less dangerous. These data suggest extreme fires such as the September 2008 event may be exploited by managers to reclaim former grasslands and savannas that have suffered the effects of bush encroachment and/or create open areas allowing grasslands to develop. However, severe fires run the risk of leading to the loss of forests and the biodiversity that they support. This study has identified the conditions likely to promote such severe fires

    Police Recognition of the Links Between Spouse Abuse and Child Abuse

    This study investigated the links between referrals to police child protection units (CPUs) and domestic violence units (DVUs) during November 1994 in one police force in an urban area of England. DVU files and CPU files were analysed and cross-referenced by investigating types, severity, and frequency of abuse; and a umber of background factors. The rate of overlap (families with files at both units) was 21.6%, although 46.3% of child protection files indicated the presence of domestic violence in the family home. The severity of maltreatment and the extent of injury for both spouse abuse and child maltreatment were significantly related to police response, with greater use of cautions or charges in more severe cases. Families with records in both units showed a higher number of prior referrals relating to both spouse abuse and child maltreatment. In addition, these cases showed greater severity of domestic violence

    Evaluating and combining digital video shot boundary detection algorithms

    The development of standards for video encoding coupled with the increased power of computing mean that content-based manipulation of digital video information is now feasible. Shots are a basic structural building block of digital video and the boundaries between shots need to be determined automatically to allow for content-based manipulation. A shot can be thought of as continuous images from one camera at a time. In this paper we examine a variety of automatic techniques for shot boundary detection that we have implemented and evaluated on a baseline of 720,000 frames (8 hours) of broadcast television. This extends our previous work on evaluating a single technique based on comparing colour histograms. A description of each of our three methods currently working is given along with how they are evaluated. It is found that although the different methods have about the same order of magnitude in terms of effectiveness, different shot boundaries are detected by the different methods. We then look at combining the three shot boundary detection methods to produce one output result and the benefits in accuracy and performance that this brought to our system. Each of the methods were changed from using a static threshold value for three unconnected methods to one using three dynamic threshold values for one connected method. In a final summing up we look at the future directions for this work

    Is there an association between the coverage of immunisation boosters by the age of 5 and deprivation?: an ecological study

    Objective: To determine whether there was an association between the coverage of booster immunisation of Diphtheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis and Polio (DTaP/IPV) and second Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) dose by age 5 in accordance with the English national immunisation schedule by area-level socioeconomic deprivation and whether this changed between 2007/08 and 2010/11. Design: Ecological study. Data: Routinely collected national Cover of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly data on immunisation coverage for DTaP/IPV booster and second MMR dose by age 5 and the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). Setting: Primary Care Trust (PCT) areas in England between 2007/08 and 2010/11. Outcome Measures: Population coverage (%) of DTaP/IPV booster and second MMR immunisation by age 5. Results: Over the 4 years among the 9,457,600 children there was an increase in the mean proportion of children being immunised for DTaP/IPV booster and second MMR across England, increasing from 79% (standard deviation (SD12%)) to 86% (SD8%) for DTaP/IPV and 75% (SD10%) to 84% (SD6%) for second MMR between 2007/08 and 2010/11. In 2007/08 the area with lowest DTaP/IPV booster coverage was 31% compared to 54.4% in 2010/11 and for the second MMR in 2007/08 was 39% compared to 64.8% in 2010/11. A weak negative correlation was observed between average IMD score and immunisation coverage for the DTaP/IPV booster which reduced but remained statistically significant over the study period (r = −0.298, p<0.001 in 2007/08 and r = −0.179, p = 0.028 in 2010/11). This was similar for the second MMR in 2007/08 (r = −0.225, p = 0.008) and 2008/09 (r = −0.216, p = 0.008) but there was no statistically significant correlation in 2009/10 (r = −0.108, p = 0.186) or 2010/11 (r = −0.078, p = 0.343). Conclusion: Lower immunisation coverage of DTaP/IPV booster and second MMR dose was associated with higher area-level socioeconomic deprivation, although this inequality reduced between 2007/08 and 2010/11 as proportions of children being immunised increased at PCT level, particularly for the most deprived areas. However, coverage is still below the World Health Organisation recommended 95% threshold for Europe
