Effect of climatic oscillations on small pelagic fisheries and its economic profit in the Gulf of Cadiz

Several studies have shown the effect of climatic oscillations on fisheries. Small pelagic fish are of special global economic importance and very sensitive to fluctuations in the physical environment in which they live. The main goal of this study was to explore the relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the East Atlantic pattern (EA), and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the landings and first sale prices of the most representative small pelagic commercial species of the purse-seine fisheries in the Gulf of Cadiz (North East Atlantic), the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and the European sardine Sardine pilchardus. Generalised linear models (GLMs) with different data transformations and distribution errors were generated to analyse these relationships. The best results of the models were obtained by applying a moving average of order 3 to the dataset with a double weighted median. Our results demonstrate relationships between NAO, AO, and EA and European anchovy and sardine landings. These cause an indirect effect on the first sale price in markets through catch variations, which affect the price according to the law of supply and demand. The limitations of this study and management implications are discussed.Postprint2,5

Prodromal symptoms and the duration of untreated psychosis in first episode of psychosis patients: what differences are there between early vs. adult onset and between schizophrenia vs. bipolar disorder?

To assess the role of age (early onset psychosis-EOP < 18 years vs. adult onset psychosis-AOP) and diagnosis (schizophrenia spectrum disorders-SSD vs. bipolar disorders-BD) on the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and prodromal symptoms in a sample of patients with a first episode of psychosis. 331 patients with a first episode of psychosis (7–35 years old) were recruited and 174 (52.6%) diagnosed with SSD or BD at one-year follow-up through a multicenter longitudinal study. The Symptom Onset in Schizophrenia (SOS) inventory, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and the structured clinical interviews for DSM-IV diagnoses were administered. Generalized linear models compared the main effects and group interaction. 273 AOP (25.2 ± 5.1 years; 66.5% male) and 58 EOP patients (15.5 ± 1.8 years; 70.7% male) were included. EOP patients had significantly more prodromal symptoms with a higher frequency of trouble with thinking, avolition and hallucinations than AOP patients, and significantly different median DUP (91 [33–177] vs. 58 [21–140] days; Z = − 2.006, p = 0.045). This was also significantly longer in SSD vs. BD patients (90 [31–155] vs. 30 [7–66] days; Z = − 2.916, p = 0.004) who, moreover had different profiles of prodromal symptoms. When assessing the interaction between age at onset (EOP/AOP) and type of diagnosis (SSD/BD), avolition was significantly higher (Wald statistic = 3.945; p = 0.047), in AOP patients with SSD compared to AOP BD patients (p = 0.004). Awareness of differences in length of DUP and prodromal symptoms in EOP vs. AOP and SSD vs. BD patients could help improve the early detection of psychosis among minors

Estimation of jellyfish abundance in the south-eastern Spanish coastline by using an explainable artificial intelligence model based on fuzzy logic

    No full text
Jellyfish swarms have a direct negative impact on human enterprise, specially on places dependent on the sun and beach economy. The local economy and the health of bathers may be at risk from the emergence of these gelatinous organisms. Economic losses can be mitigated by monitoring the occurrence of jellyfish on the coast. Due to the lack of jellyfish data, environmental citizen science is presented as an alternative for data collection. In this study, fuzzy logic-based models have been used to modelize the knowledge from citizen comments collected by the Infomedusa app. The effect of local climatological factors such as wind speed and direction on the incidence of jellyfish on the coast was studied. The fuzzy logic-based models showed that winds perpendicular to the coast lead to a higher occurrence of jellyfish swarms in central and eastern Malaga, while winds parallel to the coast have a greater influence in the westernmost coasts. Wind speed has a different effect on jellyfish incidence depending on the study area and wind direction. Data extracted from the Infomedusa app can help to address the historical scarcity of scientific data on jellyfish. This app presents an opportunity for future studies to expand the knowledge about the occurrence of these organisms on the coasts and may contribute to the prediction of onshore arrival.Postprint2,24

Indicators of financial coverage in Colombia (March 2017)

    No full text
This study intends to evaluate the coverage of financial services in the country, through an analysis of the departmental and municipal location of the offices of the different types of credit establishments and banking correspondents, according to the information available to March 2017. It was identified that for each office in the Colombian territory there were 12 banking correspondents. Both types of points of contact were concentrated especially in cities, agglomerations and territorial entities of intermediate rurality. Likewise, it was evidenced that the progress in geographic coverage has occurred through the dispersion of bank correspondents which are found in 243 municipalities (21.66% of the total in Colombia) that do not have financial offices. Despite this, there are still 16 municipalities (1.4%) without any coverage
