Biological control of chestnut blight in Portugal
Plant protection is a multi-disciplinary subject and different strategies need to be
addressed for sustainable plant health management Biological control is an
ecosystem-based approach extending from lab based investigation to fie ld
applications. Hipovirulence is a specific method for biological control of Chestnut
Blight a lethal disease of the American and European chestnut. The causal
pathogen of Chestnut Blight is Cryphonectria parasitica a fungus of Asian origin
which is an A2 quarantine organism in Europe. Chestnut Blight was recorded in
Portugal since 1990, one of the last European countries where Chestnut Blight has
been introduced, and is now well established and widespread with a fast expansion in all regions of chestnut. Biological control with hypovirulent strains of C. parasitica is considered an efficient mean to control the disease and improve chestnut
recovered. One of the first goa ls of this study is applying hipovirulence as a
biological method for Chestnut Blight control and producing a solid scientific base to
extend the method all over the chestnut region. it will have a very high practical
impact on crop productivity, and on social perception of applied research. Field
records and studies include parameters related to trees (dendrometric parameters
and plant health status) and the physical characteristics of the plots (type of soil,
exposure, geographic coordinates, age of trees, actual management of soil, etc.).
Other scientific issues are related with population structure of the pathogen, namely:
evolutionary forces that are present or dominate at population level (clonality,
selfing, self-incompatibility, vc type structure, vc type segregation, CHV presence,
CHV species). The effect of the founder population and driven forces on actual and
future populations can be answered with the data generated by this work. The study
can also be an innovative and a realistic approach and has potential for large and
extended field application with a real positive impact in chestnut productionFCT -PTDC/AGR-PRO/4606/201
abdominal alterados; baixa prática de atividade física; baixo consumo de legumes;
factors for the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). Sensitizing the
population to this problem, increasing knowledge, and promoting healthy lifestyle
habits is essential to reduce its incidence.
With the goal to implement community interventions related to these risk
factors, the project “Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in a population at risk:
Community nursing intervention” was developed, using a health planning
methodology. In the diagnosis of the situation, the “Finnish Diabetes Risk Score”
(Direção Geral da Saúde, 2013) data collection instrument was selected. The data
was analyzed through descriptive analysis.
The sample included 18 people identified with a risk level greater than 12
points and a body mass index greater than 25. Health problems were prioritized
through the analysis grid, having been identified: altered weight and abdominal
circumference; low physical activity; low consumption of vegetables; low frequency of
eating.
The strategies selected were health education, health communication and
care articulation. An educational program for the promotion of healthy lifestyles” was
implemented in seven group sessions. Activities promoting health behaviors were
developed supported by the “Health Promotion” model (Pender, Murdaught &
Parsons, 2015).
From results analysis, it can be concluded that the community intervention
contributed to the promotion of health behaviors (eating and physical activity habits)
with a reduction in the degree of DM2 risk in 72% of the participants, therefore
contributing to the prevention of DM2
Spatial dynamics of chestnut blight disease at the plot level using the Ripley’s K function
We used the Ripley’s K function to describe the spatial dynamics of chestnut blight
(Cryphonectria parasitica (Murrill) Barr) in sweet chestnut orchards to look at pattern in the
pathogen distribution over time and the effect of the location of infected trees on the pattern of
disease spread. We used data on infected and dead trees in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2009 in 4
orchards located in Curopos parish, Portugal. We found both random and aggregated patterns of
infected trees in the beginning of the study period and significant association of infected trees
between successive dates, particularly at short distances. Two of the 4 studied orchards showed
significant clustering of infected and dead trees in any of the dates observed but random spatial
pattern in the remaining two which can possibly be explained by both natural propagation of the
disease and management practices
Natural spread of hypovirulence in Cryphonectria parasitica. A case study, Sergude - Minho – Portugal
Chestnut (Castanea sativa) is a species of great economic and social importance in the Northern region of Portugal. One
of the biggest barriers to increased nut production is related to the presence of biotic factors such as the old and familiar
Ink Disease and more recently the Chestnut Blight that is causing high mortality in chestnut. In the absence of chemical
fungicides capable of stopping the development of the Chestnut Blight and considering the reduced effectiveness of
other mitigation measures, hypovirulence is the most advantageous way to control the disease in Europe. The method
showed high ability to heal the cankers and promote the complete recovery of chestnut. The molecular mechanism
of hypovirulence is associated with the presence of dsRNA virus of the genus Hypovirus. In Sergude (Minho) in a
chestnut grove with all trees attacked by C. parasitica in a period of 3-4 years occurred the natural remission of cankers
leading to the recovery of diseased trees. Our objective was to understand the mechanisms involved in the expression
of hypovirulence and factors associated with its natural dispersion . We studied the population structure of C. parasitica
present in chestnut and associated epiphytic and endophytic mycoflor
Chestnut Blight in Trás-os-Montes region (Portugal): Current incidence and Cryphonectria parasitica population study for introduction of Biological control by hypovirulence
O castanheiro europeu (Castanea sativa Mill.)
reduzir o inóculo do parasita. A Hipovirulência, mediada
a estrutura populacional do fungo parasita. A análise
Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill) is an ancient and low input agroforestry system of the Portuguese Northeast Mountains. Chestnut Blight that
triggered a disturbing epidemics, which became a major cause of chestnut tree mortality after its establishment in 1989, is associated with Cryphonectria

continuously increase and spread. Biological control by hypovirulence, a hypovirus CHV1 mediated system, is an efficient method to control the disease and
improve the host plant recovery. The main goal of this work was obtaining, the rational for applying hypovirulence to control Chestnut Blight in Portugal. In
three parishes, where the chestnut blight is present since its introduction, and applying the georeferencing methods the spread and the genetic population
structure of C. parasitica was evaluated. In a 500x500m geographic grid, 70 sampled points and 1331 trees were evaluated. The geostatistical analysis showed
widespread distribution of the disease with outbreaks with high incidence of the disease varying from 54.55% to 73 33%. Overall, five vc types were found.
EU-11 is the dominant vc type comprising 85.50% of the isolates, followed by EU01 (5.34%), EU66 (4.58%) and EU12 (2.90%), that were considered
new introductions of the parasite. MAT-1 and MAT-2 were identified in all study sites. MAT-2 is dominant but in one location near 1:1 that configure sexual
reproduction. The still low diversity of vc type in the C. parasitica population recommend hypovirulence introduction as a preferential mean to control
