Taking the assumptions of the resource dependency theory as our starting point, the main objective of this investigation is to gain an understanding of how and in what way board members who serve on multiple boards (interlocks) can affect a firm’s profitability, and whether it is useful to consider the derivation of these interlocks according to the type of board member (executive or non-executive) who possesses them. Using dynamic panel data analysis (GMM) and a sample of 88 firms quoted on the Spanish Continuous Market for the period 2005–2008, our results confirm the existence of a curvilinear (inverted-U) relation between interlocks and firm performance. The results demonstrate that this relation is only significant if we include the total number of external ties rather than just the number of links generated by non-executive directors. We can also confirm that the degree of familiarity and shared knowledge between board members (measured by average board tenure) affects this relationship.

The board of directors and international decision-making

This paper develops a view of how specific elements of the directors' human and social capital can enhance a company's international performance. We have taken the view that the board is an active participant in the firm’s management, and we have therefore set out and tested a number of arguments related to the board’s role in the adoption of international decisions. Specifically, our results point to the need to incorporate board members with high levels of education and international background with ability to learn and process information and to help international decision-making. As shown by our results, a high level of external connectivity of directors could have negative repercussions for internationalization since they limit the time spent on the board and therefore reduces the cohesion and trust inside the board. The implications of this research, therefore, are important for both executives and academics, as it helps to know what attributes contribute to the board’s effectiveness in such a way as to positively affect the internationalization of the firm

Game theoretical analysis of rate adaptation protocols conciliating QoS and QoE

International audienceThe recent increase in the use of wireless networks for video transmission has led to the increase in the use of rate-adaptive protocols to maximize the resource utilization and increase the efficiency in the transmission. However, a number of these protocols lead to interactions among the users that are subjective in nature and affect the overall performance. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of interplay between the wireless network dynamics and video transmission dynamics in the light of subjective perceptions of the end users in their interactions. We investigate video exchange applications in which two users interact repeatedly over a wireless relay channel. Each user is driven by three conflicting objectives: maximizing the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) of the received video, while minimizing the transmission cost. Non-cooperative repeated games model precisely interactions among users with independent agendas. We show that adaptive video exchange is impossible if the duration of the interaction is determined. However, if the users interact indefinitely, they achieve cooperation via exchange of video streams. Our simulations evidence the tradeoff between users’ QoS and QoE of their received video. The expected duration of the interaction plays a role and draws the region of solution trade-offs. We propose further means of shaping this region using Pareto optimality and user-fairness arguments. This work proposes a concrete game theoretical framework that allows the optimal use of traditional protocols by taking into account thesubjective interactions that occur in practical scenarios

How to translate results from auctions to procurements

    Get PDF
The translation of statements from auctions to procurements is not always straightforward. We define a duality relationship between them and provide the appropriate transformations needed for establishing it. Additionally, we prove that affiliation is preserved under these transformations and establish the linkage principle for procurements.Suggestions from V. Krishna are appreciated. Nonstandard finite difference schemes for general linear delay differential systems

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the construction of non‐standard finite difference methods for coupled linear delay differential systems in the general case of non‐commuting matrix coefficients. Based on an expression for the exact solution of the continuous initial value vector delay problem, a family of non‐standard numerical methods of increasing orders is defined. Numerical examples show that the new proposed numerical methods preserve the stability properties of the exact solutions. This work extends previous results for delay systems with commuting matrix coefficients, allowing the use of the new numerical non‐standard methods in more general problems.M.A.C. and F.R. acknowledge funding by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad grant number CGL2017-89804-R

In 1926 the eminent pedagogue María de Maeztu arrived to teach a course at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires This trip of the first woman invited by the Spanish Cultural Institution, deserves a study of the content and sources of her course, the reception of her ideas and the network of intellectuals and pedagogues with whom she linked and also she is as an exponent of a transatlantic cultural mediator. In these pages her first contact with University of Buenos Aires will be studied, where years later, in the hard times of exile, she worked at the Didactics Institute until her death, in the summer of 1948 in Mar del Plata.
