Evidence that the Pomeron transforms as a non-conserved vector current

The detailed dependences of central meson production on the azimuthal angle phi, t and the meson J^P are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that the soft Pomeron transforms as a non-conserved vector current. Further tests are proposed. This opens the way for a quantitative description of q-qbar and glueball production in p p -> p M p.Comment: 12 pages, latex, 4 figure

ANALYSIS OF MARKERS OF DISEASE AND HEALTH STATUS ON HUMAN SKELETONS.

One of the main aims of the forensic anthropological practice regards the proper identification of human remains. Years of studies and research provided many instruments for the reconstruction of the so-called \u201cbiological profile\u201d (e.g. age at death, sex, stature, race); nevertheless, and despite the numerous information that it can provide, the pathological investigation of skeletons still displays many uncertainties. The identification of pathological signs from bones can in fact narrow the field of research in case of the recovery of unknown human remains, and can provide valuable data for the definition of a possible cause of death. However, the difficulties encountered when analyzing skeletal remains, due to taphonomic and environmental variables, non-specificity of the bone reaction and the monotony of bone tissue manifestation to stimuli, make pathological identification of diseases one of the most difficult fields of forensic anthropology. The aim of this research project is that of trying to narrow and clarify some aspects of skeletal pathology and forensic anthropology, by analyzing skeletons from three cemeteries of Milan, which are part of the Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection. The main feature of this collection regards the availability, for many of its individuals, of ISTAT death certificates that make the observers aware of the main cause of death and related pathological conditions of such subjects. After collecting this information the attention then focused on the macroscopic investigation of specific pathologies, those that were more widespread in the available sample, to include: cancer metastases, diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) related to drug abuse. The skeletons of this research were selected and cleaned in a proper way; subsequently, the specific pathologic investigation was carried on after an accurate literature search, aimed at finding the most characteristic features that permit the correct identification of the pathology from bones. The analyses performed allowed the demonstration of the difficulties encountered in unequivocally describe and identify such diseases, despite the previous studies conducted, mainly due to the aspecific and often altered structures acquired by the stimulated areas on bones. The modifications caused by taphonomy, together with the subjectivity of the responses and the paucity of available reference data made the investigation quite difficult. However, the available causes of death permitted a baseline to better understand the observations in identifying and describing pathologic-related skeletal lesions, and to set the basis for a more detailed and comprehensive macroscopic pathologic investigation. Such macroscopic investigation, however, has it limits, as it can not go over a certain level of certainty; for this reason, additional investigation methods (such as x-rays, biochemistry, histology and so on) or additional antemortem data are necessary for increasing the amount of information we can gain from the examination of bare skeleton

Preferential expression of the transcription coactivator HTIF1alpha gene in acute myeloid leukemia and MDS-related AML

HTIF1α, a transcription coactivator which is able to mediate RARα activity and functionally interact with PML, is encoded by a gene on chromosome 7q32–34, which is a critical region in acute myeloid leukemias (AML). With the assumption that this gene may be related to AML, we investigated the HTIF1α DNA structure and RNA expression in leukemic cells from 36 M1–M5 AML patients (28 ‘de novo’ and eight ‘secondary’ to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)). Abnormal HTIF1α DNA fragments were never found, whereas loss of HTIF1α DNA was observed in the patients with chromosome 7q32 deletion and translocation, and in one case without detectable chromosome 7 abnormality. HTIF1α RNA was found in acute myelocytic leukemic blasts, and was almost undetectable in normal mononuclear cells. The expression varied among the patients: higher in M1 to M3 subtypes, with the highest values in M1; low levels were constantly observed in M4 and M5 AML. In addition, HTIF1α was significantly overexpressed in MDS-related AML (MDR-AML), but not in MDS. We also found that HTIF1α expression was high in myeloid cell lines. In myeloblastic HL60 and promyelocytic NB4 cells, induced to differentiate along the monocytic–macrophage pathway by TPA or vitamin D3, HTIF1α expression decreased, whereas it was maintained at high levels on induction to granulocytic differentiation by RA or DMSO. In K562 cells, HTIF1α RNA levels did not change after hemin-induced erythroid differentiation. These results suggest that HTIF1α could play a role in myeloid differentiation, being distinctly regulated in hematopoietic lineages

QoT Computation for 100G Lightpaths Routed on 10G-loaded Dispersion-Managed Network Segments

The core and backbone optical network market segment is largely dominated by coherent transmission delivering 100Gbps and beyond thanks to the DSP-based coherent transceivers technology optical line systems without chromatic dispersion compensation. The metro and access segment instead is still often made of dispersion-compensated optical line systems operated with cheap 10G transceivers because of the still excessive CAPEX required to upgrade this segment to coherent technology. In the context of the gradual rise of SDN technology, aimed at dynamically, transparently and automatically managing and orchestrating optical networks, the ability to route 100G coherent channels through a section of dispersion managed network populated with legacy 10G channels enables more flexibility and CAPEX savings. In this work we propose a simple, fast and conservative quality-of-transmission estimator, tailored to the needs of a software module for optical path computation, able to estimate of the 10G-to-100G non-linear effects

Efficacy of lung volume optimization maneuver monitored by optoelectronic pletismography in the management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia

    Get PDF
Newborns affected by congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) need cardio-respiratory stabilization before undergoing surgical repair. Open lung strategy is a well-established approach to optimize lung volume in preterm infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), using both High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) and Conventional Mechanical Ventilation (CMV). We report a case of left CDH with severe lung hypoplasia, managed applying open lung strategy in HFOV (pre-surgery period) and in Assist-Control with Volume Guarantee (post-surgery period), guided by SpO2changes, TcPO2and TcPCO2monitoring. Opto-electronic plethysmography was used to measure end-expiratory chest wall volume changes (ΔEEcw) related to lung volume variations occurring during pressure changes. OEP confirmed the efficacy of using SpO2and transcutaneous gas monitoring during this recruitment maneuver
