Universality and criticality of a second-order granular solid-liquid-like phase transition
We experimentally study the critical properties of the non-equilibrium
solid-liquid-like transition that takes place in vibrated granular matter. The
critical dynamics is characterized by the coupling of the density field with
the bond-orientational order parameter , which measures the degree of
local crystallization. Two setups are compared, which present the transition at
different critical accelerations as a a result of modifying the energy
dissipation parameters. In both setups five independent critical exponents are
measured, associated to different properties of : the correlation length,
relaxation time, vanishing wavenumber limit (static susceptibility), the
hydrodynamic regime of the pair correlation function, and the amplitude of the
order parameter. The respective critical exponents agree in both setups and are
given by , , , , and , whereas the dynamical critical exponent is . The agreement on five exponents is an exigent
test for the universality of the transition. Thus, while dissipation is
strictly necessary to form the crystal, the path the system undergoes towards
the phase separation is part of a well defined universality class. In fact, the
local order shows critical properties while density does not. Being the later
conserved, the appropriate model that couples both is model C in the Hohenberg
and Halperin classification. The measured exponents are in accord with the
non-equilibrium extension to model C if we assume that , the exponent
associated in equilibrium to the specific heat divergence but with no
counterpart in this non-equilibrium experiment, vanishes.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted in PR
Fluctuations and Criticality of a Granular Solid-Liquid-like Phase Transition
We present an experimental study of density and order fluctuations in the
vicinity of the solid-liquid-like transition that occurs in a vibrated
quasi-two-dimensional granular system. The two-dimensional projected static and
dynamic correlation functions are studied. We show that density fluctuations,
characterized through the structure factor, increase in size and intensity as
the transition is approached, but they do not change significantly at the
transition itself. The dense, metastable clusters, which present square
symmetry, also increase their local order in the vicinity of the transition.
This is characterized through the bond-orientational order parameter ,
which in Fourier space obeys an Ornstein-Zernike behavior. Depending on filling
density and vertical height, the transition can be of first or second order
type. In the latter case, the associated correlation length , relaxation
time , zero limit of fluctuations (static susceptibility),
the pair correlation function of , and the amplitude of the order
parameter obey critical power laws, with saturations due to finite size
effects. Their respective critical exponents are , , , , and , whereas the dynamical critical
exponent . These results are consistent with model
C of dynamical critical phenomena, valid for a non-conserved critical order
parameter (bond-orientation order) coupled to a conserved field (density).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letter
Instrumentalization of Women's Bodies in the Novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The relegation of the body to a lower status in contrast to the mind has resulted in the subordination of women, who supposedly are more closely associated to the body. Due to this displacement, the present thesis aims at illustrating how the Gileadean society, a totalitarian regime in the novel The Handmaid’s Tale written by Margaret Atwood, instrumentalizes on women’s bodies for society’s own benefit. The analysis follows a Literary Criticism methodological approach, taking into consideration the roles and social positions of the novel’s female characters: the Wives, the Aunts, the Marthas, the Handmaids, the Sex Workers and Econowives, and the Unwomen. This same categorization of women present in the novel is the one I use to lay out the argumentation in the analysis.
The analysis is developed through the in-depth study of societal dichotomies. Here, “societal dichotomies” work as an umbrella term which embeds the following categories of analysis: 1) the mind/body dualism, 2) the women’s body as the lacking Other, 3) the hierarchy of bodies, 4) the lack of subjectivity and 5) the abject. These categories of analysis are applied to the different groups of women in the novel to illustrate the abovementioned instrumentalization of bodies, following the implicit hierarchy of bodies as the organizational pattern.
The results show how although the instrumentalization is undeniable, the level of subordination varies depending on the group of women that is being analyzed. For this reason, this thesis also aims at identifying different survival strategies that these female characters develop to escape the imposed victimization role. Although they do not escape physically, small acts of defiance such as positive self-talk and the creation of a female support network remind us that whenever there is oppression there is also resistance.
Overpseudoprimes, and Mersenne and Fermat numbers as primover numbers
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes to base
", which is a subclass of strong pseudoprimes to base . Denoting via
the multiplicative order of modulo , we show that a composite
is overpseudoprime if and only if is invariant for all divisors
of . In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers
, where is prime, are overpseudoprime to base 2 and squares of
Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes to base 2. Finally, we show that some
kinds of well known numbers are overpseudoprime to a base .Comment: 9 page
Jubaed chilensis (Mol) Baillon is the world's southernmost palm tree. It grows as an endemic species in Chile in sporadic forests, between 30° and 37° south, mainly in settings of the coastal mountains of the country's mediterranean zone. The hills around the cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar have supported the pressure and the advance of the population, causing strong impacts on the humid sclerophyllous remnants of the plant groups of a century ago. This habitat contained several hundred palm trees that have been disappearing due to multiple effects. The results of a research that started ten years ago to study the regression process of these forests and of the Chilean palrn are presented. Cutting, cattle raising, getting firewood and making charcoal, the advance of housing toward the hills due to the growth of coastal cities, road construction, and the recurrence of forest fires since 1960 have been the most recurrent impacts for the present condition of these ecosystems. On the other hand, the constant exploitation of the palm for its fiuits and the use of its long leaves have affected it greatly. It supported an enormous impact when in 1996 there was much land moving on these slopes to build a highway, eliminating andlor transferring about 500 palms. In 1999 space was made also in that area to build a gas duct for Viña del Mar. This again meant the loss of dozens of palms, and to this day the summer fires continue affecting these palm groves.
