    The N-Vortex Problem on a Symmetric Ellipsoid: A Perturbation Approach

    We consider the N-vortex problem on a ellipsoid of revolution. Applying standard techniques of classical perturbation theory we construct a sequence of conformal transformations from the ellipsoid into the complex plane. Using these transformations the equations of motion for the N-vortex problem on the ellipsoid are written as a formal series on the eccentricity of the ellipsoid's generating ellipse. First order equations are obtained explicitly. We show numerically that the truncated first order system for the three-vortices system on the symmetric ellipsoid is non-integrable.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

    Three Li-rich K giants: IRAS 12327-6523, IRAS 13539-4153, and IRAS 17596-3952

    We report on spectroscopic analyses of three K giants previously suggested to be Li-rich: IRAS 12327-6523, IRAS 13539-4153, and IRAS 17596-3952. High-resolution optical spectra and the LTE model atmospheres are used to derive the stellar parameters: (TeffT_{\rm eff}, log gg, [Fe/H]), elemental abundances, and the isotopic ratio 12^{12}C/13^{13}C. IRAS 13539-4153 shows an extremely high Li abundance of logâĄÏ”\log\epsilon(Li) ≈\approx 4.2, a value ten times more than the present Li abundance in the local interstellar medium. This is the third highest Li abundance yet reported for a K giant. IRAS 12327-6523 shows a Li abundances of logâĄÏ”\log\epsilon(Li)≈\approx 1.4. IRAS 17596-3952 is a rapidly rotating (Vsin⁥iV{\sin i} ≈\approx 35 km s−1^{-1}) K giant with logâĄÏ”\log\epsilon(Li) ≈\approx 2.2. Infrared photometry which shows the presence of an IR excess suggesting mass-loss.     Experimental Investigation of 3D Velocity by Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) in a Short Riser Section

    AbstractThe measurement of instantaneous velocity field with high spatial resolution makes the Tomo-PIV (tomographic particle image velocimetry) technique attractive for the study of complex flows in circulating beds. The Tomo-PIV technique is employed for obtaining the velocity field of the fluid phase in three dimensions using tracer particles which follow the fluid. They are immersed in the fluid and illuminated by a source of pulsed light (laser) within a three-dimensional region. Images of the particles are recorded in the focus of several viewing directions using CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) sensors. The distribution of light intensity is discretized into a 3D array of voxels and then analyzed by interrogation of cross-correlation in three dimensions. The information field is returned in the form of instantaneous velocities of the measurement volume. This paper aims to present an experimental setup for an initial investigation of the velocity field of the particulate phase of a riser section of a circulating bed. The calibration errors were between 0.209 and 0.066 pixels and after the self-calibration errors were below 0.097 pixels. The volume investigated was 82 x 100 x 10 mm3 with a resolution of 1571 x 897 x 113 voxels. The reconstructed volumes were processed using 3D cross-correlation with a volume interrogation size of 110 voxels decreasing to a final size of 16 voxels with a 75% overlap between adjacent interrogation volumes. The velocity field produced has 224 x 393 x 28 voxels

    Detailed Analysis of Nearby Bulgelike Dwarf Stars II. Lithium Abundances

    Li abundances are derived for a sample of bulgelike stars with isochronal ages of 10-11 Gyr. These stars have orbits with pericentric distances, Rp, as small as 2-3 kpc and Zmax < 1 kpc. The sample comprises G and K dwarf stars in the metallicity range -0.80<[Fe/H]< +0.40. Few data of Li abundances in old turn-off stars (> 4.5 Gyr) within the present metallicity range are available. M67 (4.7 Gyr) and NGC 188 (6 Gyr) are the oldest studied metal-rich open clusters with late-type stars. Li abundances have also been studied for few samples of old metal-rich field stars. In the present work a high dispersion in Li abundances is found for bulgelike stars for all the metallicity range, comparable with values in M67. The role of metallicity and age on a Li depletion pattern is discussed. The possible connection between Li depletion and oxygen abundance due to atmospheric opacity effects is investigated.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    This study presents the results obtained in a field experiment carried out at Glicério, Northwest of São Paulo state, Brazil, whose objective was to analyze changes of selected soil physical properties and water infiltration rates on a Yellow-Red Latosol, under three different management conditions. The experimental design was arranged as completely randomized split-block with twelve treatments, which corresponded to four depths (0-0.05 m; 0.05-0.10 m; 0.10-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m) and three conditions of soil use and management with four replications. The soil surface conditions were: conventional tillage (one disking with moulboard plus two levelling passes with harrow), nine months before starting filed experiences; recent conventional tillage (also one disking with moulboard plus two levelling passes with harrow) and native forest. The conventional tillage areas were cropped for about fifteen years with annual cultures. The considered soil general physical properties were: macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, bulk density, soil moisture and penetration resistance and, in addition; soil water infiltration rates were also recorded. According to our results, differences on general soil physical properties and infiltration rates appeared when both tilled sub-treatments and native forest were compared. Both, plots recently prepared by conventional tillage and those prepared by tillage but left nine months in rest, presented a statistically significant decrease of constant (final) water infiltration rates of 92.72% and 91.91% when compared with native forest plots

    Abundance and Ecological Distribution of the Sete-Barbas Shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) (Decapoda: Penaeoidea) in Three Bays of the Ubatuba Region, Southeastern Brazil

    The influence of environmental factors on the abundance and spatial-temporal distribution of the shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri was investigated in southeastern Brazil over 2 years. Monthly collections were conducted in Mar Virado, Ubatuba and Ubatumirim Bays using a commercial shrimp fishing boat equipped with 2 double-rig nets. Each bay was divided into 6 sampling stations, all of which were less than 25 m deep. The spatial distribution of X. kroyeri differed among Bays. Highest abundance values were recorded in areas where silt and clay comprised more than 70% of the bottom sediment. Abundance of X. kroyeri followed a seasonal trend, being higher during fall and winter, when intrusions of tropical waters are frequent, causing an increase in salinity (\u3e 35‰) and temperature (\u3e 21° C). A clear decrease in shrimp abundance followed a decrease in bottom temperature (\u3c 20° C) during spring and summer due to the influence of cold water currents, particularly the South Atlantic Central Water. These results suggest that sediment type, salinity, and temperature are among the most important variables affecting the spatial and seasonal distribution of this species

    Analysis of the effect of renal excretory system cooling during thermal radiofrequency ablation in an animal model

    Analysis of renal excretory system integrity and efficacy of radiofrequency ablation with and without irrigation with saline at 2 o C (SF2). The median third of sixteen kidneys were submitted to radiofrequency (exposition of 1 cm) controlled by intra-surgical ultrasound, with eight minutes cycles and median temperature of 90 o C in eight female pigs. One excretory renal system was cooled with SF2, at a 30ml/min rate, and the other kidney was not. After 14 days of post-operatory, the biggest diameters of the lesions and the radiological aspects of the excretory system were compared by bilateral ascending pyelogram and the animals were sacrificed in order to perform histological analysis. There were no significant differences between the diameters of the kidney lesions whether or not exposed to cooling of the excretory system. Median diameter of the cooled kidneys and not cooled kidneys were respectively (in mm): anteroposterior: 11.46 vs. 12.5 (p = 0.23); longitudinal: 17.94 vs. 18.84 (p = 0.62); depth: 11.38 vs. 12.25 (p = 0.47). There was no lesion of the excretory system or signs of leakage of contrast media or hydronephrosis at ascending pyelogram. Cooling of excretory system during radiofrequency ablation does not significantly alter generated coagulation necrosis or affect the integrity of the excretory system in the studied model401939
