    Temporal evolution of a circular membrane subject to various boundary conditions

    In this paper we illustrate a standard problem of mathematical physics, by exploring the potential of using a computer algebra system in a classroom experiment. Although many textbooks describe the problem and solve its particular examples to variable extent, to the student is always left the task of imagining, after a few tedious calculations, the temporal evolution of the system. The aim of this paper is, using algebraic computation, to give a complete route to the problem of an asymmetrically perturbed circular membrane in viscous media with the usual boundary conditions, including the computer animation of the results

    Zeeman splitting and spin dynamics tuning by exciton charging in two-dimensional systems

This effect can be used to engineer the spin character of excitonic complexes in two-dimensional systems tuned by the magnetic field strength. Conditions for spin flip for each kind of excitonic complex is detailed and the nature of the effect discussed. Differences in the effective Zeeman splitting between neutral and charged excitons are theoretically predicted and unambiguously confirmed experimentally. Circularly polarized resolved photoluminescence has been used to study these effects under applied magnetic fields.     Electron cotunneling through doubly occupied quantum dots: effect of spin configuration

    A microscopic theory is presented for electron cotunneling through doubly occupied quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime. Beyond the semiclassic framework of phenomenological models, a fully quantum mechanical solution for cotunneling of electrons through a one-dimensional quantum dot is obtained using a quantum transmitting boundary method without any fitting parameters. It is revealed that the cotunneling conductance exhibits strong dependence on the spin configuration of the electrons confined inside the dot. Especially for the triplet configuration, the conductance shows an obvious deviation from the well-known quadratic dependence on the applied bias voltage. Furthermore, it is found that the cotunneling conductance reveals more sensitive dependence on the barrier width than the height

    Generation and control of spin-polarized photocurrents in GaMnAs heterostructures

The results reveal regions in the infrared range of the energy spectrum, in which the proposed structure is remarkably spin-selective. For such photon energies, the generated photocurrents are strongly spin-polarized. Application of a relatively small static bias in the growth direction of the structure is predicted to efficiently reverse the spin-polarization for some photon energies. This behavior suggests the possibility of conveniently simple switching mechanisms. The physics underlying the results is studied and understood in terms of the spin-dependent properties emerging from the particular potential profile of the structure.
