    Gemini spectra of 12000K white dwarf stars

    We report signal-to-noise ratio SNR ~ 100 optical spectra for four DA white dwarf stars acquired with the GMOS spectrograph of the 8m Gemini north telescope. These stars have 18<g<19 and are around Teff ~ 12000 K, were the hydrogen lines are close to maximum. Our purpose is to test if the effective temperatures and surface gravities derived from the relatively low signal-to-noise ratio ( ~ 21) optical spectra acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey through model atmosphere fitting are trustworthy. Our spectra range from 3800A to 6000A, therefore including H beta to H9. The H8 line was only marginally present in the SDSS spectra, but is crucial to determine the gravity. When we compare the values published by Kleinman et al. (2004) and Eisenstein et al. (2006) with our line-profile (LPT) fits, the average differences are: Delta Teff ~ 320 K, systematically lower in SDSS, and Delta log g ~ 0.24 dex, systematically larger in SDSS. The correlation between gravity and effective temperature can only be broken at wavelengths bluer than 3800 A. The uncertainties in Teff are 60% larger, and in log g larger by a factor of 4, than the Kleinman et al. (2004) and Eisenstein et al. (2006) internal uncertainties.Comment: 11 pages and 8 figure

    Comparison of upper body strength gains between men and women after 10 weeks of resistance training

    Resistance training (RT) offers benefits to both men and women. However, the studies about the differences between men and women in response to an RT program are not conclusive and few data are available about upper body strength response. The aim of this study was to compare elbow flexor strength gains in men and women after 10 weeks of RT. Forty-four college-aged men (22.63 +/- 2.34 years) and forty-seven college-aged women (21.62 +/- 2.96 years) participated in the study. The RT program was performed two days a week for 10 weeks. Before and after the training period, peak torque (PT) of the elbow flexors was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer. PT values were higher in men in comparison to women in pre-and post-tests (p 0.05). Effect sizes were 0.57 and 0.56 for men and women, respectively. In conclusion, the present study suggests that men and women have a similar upper body strength response to RT

    The pulsating DA white dwarf star EC 14012-1446: results from four epochs of time-resolved photometry

    The pulsating DA white dwarfs are the coolest degenerate stars that undergo self-driven oscillations. Understanding their interior structure will help to understand the previous evolution of the star. To this end, we report the analysis of more than 200 h of time-resolved CCD photometry of the pulsating DA white dwarf star EC 14012-1446 acquired during four observing epochs in three different years, including a coordinated three-site campaign. A total of 19 independent frequencies in the star's light variations together with 148 combination signals up to fifth order could be detected. We are unable to obtain the period spacing of the normal modes and therefore a mass estimate of the star, but we infer a fairly short rotation period of 0.61 +/- 0.03 d, assuming the rotationally split modes are l=1. The pulsation modes of the star undergo amplitude and frequency variations, in the sense that modes with higher radial overtone show more pronounced variability and that amplitude changes are always accompanied by frequency variations. Most of the second-order combination frequencies detected have amplitudes that are a function of their parent mode amplitudes, but we found a few cases of possible resonantly excited modes. We point out the complications in the analysis and interpretation of data sets of pulsating white dwarfs that are affected by combination frequencies of the form f_A+f_B-f_C intruding into the frequency range of the independent modes.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables.     Interactions between contact lenses and lens care solutions: Influence in optical properties

    Purpose: Investigate changes in optical properties of contact lenses materials (transmittance and reflectance) and lens care solutions (absorption and fluorescence) resulting from its interaction. Methods: From an experimental study, triplicate measurements of transmittance and reflectance of five contact lenses (Senofilcon A, Lotrafilcon B, Balafilcon A, Comfilcon A, and Omafilcon A), as well as UV-vis absorption and fluorescence of four lens care solutions (LCS) (ReNu MultiPlus, Biotrue, OPTI-FREE PureMoist, and AOSept Plus), were evaluated before and after 8 h, one day and one week in storage. The outcomes were provided by Shimadzu UV3101-PC UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere, between 200-700 nm, and SPEX-Fluorolog 2 FL3-22 spectrofluorometer. Results: All variables exhibited statistically significant differences over time. Comfilcon A showed the lowest ultraviolet radiation (UVR) A & B attenuation. Balafilcon A and Lotrafilcon B displayed a slight suppression of UVR. Senofilcon A was effective in UVR protection and showed less effect on the fluorescence of lens care solutions. Overall, the reflectance decreased after storage (p < 0.05). AOSept Plus absorbance and fluorescence demonstrated lower interactions than multipurpose solutions (MPS), and Lotrafilcon B induced more remarkable changes in optical properties of LCS than the other materials. Conclusion: The findings suggest that optical variables of lens care solutions and contact lenses changed mutually after storage, probably associated with biochemical and biophysical interactions between components and the release of some polymer compounds.     Sensitive optical detection of clinically relevant biomarkers in affordable microfluidic devices: Overcoming substrate diffusion limitations

    One of the biggest challenges in miniaturization of optical immunoassays is the short light path distance of microchannels/microcapillaries. Protein biomarkers are often presented in circulating blood in the picomolar-femtomolar range, requiring exceptional levels of sensitivity that cannot be met with traditional chromogenic substrates and without sophisticated, bulky detection systems. This study discloses an effective strategy for increasing the sensitivity and shorten the total test time for sandwich ELISAs in microfluidic devices optically interrogated, based on enhancing enzymatic amplification. We found that activity of Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) in mesofluidic systems is highly limited by diffusion, therefore increasing the concentration of enzymatic substrate in these systems does not translate into an enhancement in enzymatic conversation. The opposite happens in microfluidic systems due to short diffusion distances, however increased concentration of the second enzymatic substrate, hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2), leads to enzyme inhibition as herein reported. Consequently, we found that the molar ratio of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to hydrogen peroxide from commercially substrate formulations is not suitable for miniaturized systems. Sandwich ELISA quantitation of a cancer biomarker PSA and human cytokine IL-1β in fluoropolymer microfluidic strips revealed over one order of magnitude increase in sensitivity and 10-fold decrease in incubation time by simply changing the molar ratio of OPD:H 2O 2 from 1:3 to 1:1 and increasing OPD concentration from 1 to 4 mg/ml. This enhancement in enzymatic amplification offers finally the sensitivity required for optical interrogation of novel portable and affordable microfluidic devices with inexpensive and ubiquitous smartphones and flatbed scanners. </p
