Inviscid dynamical structures near Couette flow
Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow
v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation
at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not
been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood
of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal
horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in
any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any
horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighborhoods are
very rich, including nontrivial steady flows, stable and unstable manifolds of
nearby unstable shears. Second, in the (vorticity) H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhood
of Couette, we show that there exist no non-parallel steadily travelling flows
v(x-ct,y), and no unstable shears. This suggests that the long time dynamics in
H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of Couette might be much simpler. Such contrasting
dynamics in H^{s} spaces with the critical power s=(3/2) is a truly nonlinear
phenomena, since the linear inviscid damping near Couette is true for any
initial vorticity in L^2
A Re-analysis of Caries Rates in a Preventive Trial using Poisson Regression Models
The analysis of caries incidence in clinical trials has several challenging features: (1) The distribution of the number of caries onsets per patient is skewed, with the majority of patients having few or no cavities; (2) the number of surfaces at risk varies (i) over time and (ii) between patients, due to eruption and exfoliation patterns, dental diseases, and treatments ; (3) surfaces within a patient differ in their caries susceptibility, and (4) caries onsets within a patient are correlated due to shared host factors. Recent statistical developments in the area of correlated data analyses permit incorporation of some of these characteristics into the analyses. With Poisson regression models, the expected number of caries onsets can be related to the number of surfaces at risk, the time they have been at risk, and surface- and subject-specific explanatory variables. The parameter estimated in these models is an epidemiological measure of disease occurrence: the disease incidence rate (caries rate) or the rate of change from healthy (sound) to diseased (carious). Differences and ratios of these rates provide standard epidemiological measures of excess risk. To illustrate, Poisson regression models were used for exploratory analyses of the Ylivieska xylitol study.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67228/2/10.1177_00220345940730021401.pd
Neutral Plasma Oscillations at Zero Temperature
We use cold plasma theory to calculate the response of an ultracold neutral
plasma to an applied rf field. The free oscillation of the system has a
continuous spectrum and an associated damped quasimode. We show that this
quasimode dominates the driven response. We use this model to simulate plasma
oscillations in an expanding ultracold neutral plasma, providing insights into
the assumptions used to interpret experimental data [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 318

Using a cognitive architecture to examine what develops
Different theories of development propose alternative mechanisms by which development occurs. Cognitive architectures can be used to examine the influence of each proposed mechanism of development while keeping all other mechanisms constant. An ACT-R computational model that matched adult behavior in solving a 21-block pyramid puzzle was created. The model was modified in three ways that corresponded to mechanisms of development proposed by developmental theories. The results showed that all the modifications (two of capacity and one of strategy choice) could approximate the behavior of 7-year-old children on the task. The strategy-choice modification provided the closest match on the two central measures of task behavior (time taken per layer, r = .99, and construction attempts per layer, r = .73). Modifying cognitive architectures is a fruitful way to compare and test potential developmental mechanisms, and can therefore help in specifying “what develops.
Wind turbine blade design review
A detailed review of the current state-of-art for wind turbine blade design is presented, including theoretical maximum efficiency, propulsion, practical efficiency, HAWT blade design, and blade loads. The review provides a complete picture of wind turbine blade design and shows the dominance of modern turbines almost exclusive use of horizontal axis rotors. The aerodynamic design principles for a modern wind turbine blade are detailed, including blade plan shape/quantity, aerofoil selection and optimal attack angles. A detailed review of design loads on wind turbine blades is offered, describing aerodynamic, gravitational, centrifugal, gyroscopic and operational conditions

Renormalized Path Integral for the Two-Dimensional Delta-Function Interaction
A path-integral approach for delta-function potentials is presented.
Particular attention is paid to the two-dimensional case, which illustrates the
realization of a quantum anomaly for a scale invariant problem in quantum
mechanics. Our treatment is based on an infinite summation of perturbation
theory that captures the nonperturbative nature of the delta-function bound
state. The well-known singular character of the two-dimensional delta-function
potential is dealt with by considering the renormalized path integral resulting
from a variety of schemes: dimensional, momentum-cutoff, and real-space
regularization. Moreover, compatibility of the bound-state and scattering
sectors is shown.Comment: 26 pages. The paper was significantly expanded and numerous equations

International Influences and Drag: Just a Case of Tucking or Binding?
Recently there has been an internationalisation in the training of UK drag performers. Whilst papers exist focused on drag kings and queens related to their community, few explore how kings/queens train – and fewer still explore international aspects. There are formal courses for drag, but historically this training was informal, present within specific performance communities built around LGBTQ cultures. Tracing dominant figures in such training – the drag mother/father – in order to historicise and contextualise the current explosion in drag performance, the paper argues that the potential globalisation of drag is largely down to the diversification of sources of knowledge available via the internet. Traditionally, performers trained with an established practitioner, where regional variances of drag were passed on. However, current new performers often learn ‘tricks of the trade’ through internet videos posted by people on other continents. In these videos, practitioners pass on their knowledge from the perspective of their locality, as if universal. New kings/queens are not passive in this training and locally infuse their acts, yet historical and local erasures persist. The paper argues that to engage with drag as performance one must be aware of locality and the deep connects drag has with its communities
Primary Invasive Aspergillosis of the Digestive Tract: Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature
BACKGROUND: Disseminated aspergillosis is thought to occur as a result of vascular invasion from the lungs with subsequent bloodstream dissemination, and portals of entry other than sinuses and/or the respiratory tract remain speculative. METHODS: We report two cases of primary aspergillosis in the digestive tract and present a detailed review of eight of the 23 previously-published cases for which detailed data are available. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: These ten cases presented with symptoms suggestive of typhlitis, with further peritonitis requiring laparotomy and small bowel segmental resection. All cases were characterized by the absence of pulmonary disease at the time of histologically-confirmed gastrointestinal involvement with vascular invasion by branched Aspergillus hyphae. These cases suggest that the digestive tract may represent a portal of entry for Aspergillus species in immunocompromised patients
