Measurement of the Fermi Constant by FAST
An initial measurement of the lifetime of the positive muon to a precision of
16 parts per million (ppm) has been performed with the FAST detector at the
Paul Scherrer Institute. The result is tau_mu = 2.197083 (32) (15) microsec,
where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The muon
lifetime determines the Fermi constant, G_F = 1.166353 (9) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (8
ppm).Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Feminist discursive practices: analysis of slogans in the demonstration of March 8th in Bilbao
The mobilization for the Women’s Day in Bilbao, 2019, received unprecedented support among the demonstrations called by feminist organizations to date. In this context, this research aimed to analyze the slogans of the banners carried by those women who joined the march individually but not belonged to the Feminist Movement. Using a qualitative methodology and critical discourse analysis, a sample of 154 slogans was analyzed. The results revealed a discursive focus on violence, equality and struggle that challenged society, while individualistic voices were detected that valued free choice and individual empowerment over collective values of solidarity. The analysis shows how the feminist struggle is far from being homogeneous, allowing for diverse, sometimes divergent and even contested voices, which show multiple ways of understanding feminism as a dynamic and fluid polyphonic movement
The use of a new radiological technique for kidneys visualization isproposed, the direct retroperitoneal pneumograpby; an easy and safe technique which gives high qua lity images, visualizing selectively one or both kidneys starting from only one insufflation point. An experimental model of comparison between the direct retroperitoneal pneumograpby, the pneumoperitoneograpby and the pararectal retroperitoneal neumography is carried out; estimating the images qua lity, the difficulty level and the security ofthis techniques
Anisotropy of particle fluxes in primary cosmic rays measured with the alpha magnetic spectrometer on the ISS
An analysis of anisotropies in the arrival directions of galactic electrons and positrons, as well as protons, Helium, Carbon and Oxygen has been performed with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station using the first 6.5 years (electrons and positrons) and the first 7.5 years (protons, Helium, Carbon, Oxygen) of data taking. Results on a dipole signal in Galactic coordinates are reported.
The arrival directions of all studied cosmic ray species are consistent with isotropy. For energies above 16 GeV a limit of δ < 0.019 (δ < 0.005) at the 95% confidence level is obtained for positrons (electrons). For rigidities above 200 GV a limit of δ < 0.0038 (δ < 0.0036, δ < 0.019,δ < 0.017) at the 95% confidence level is obtained for protons (Helium, Carbon, Oxygen). The quoted limits are based on a total of ( ) positron (electron, proton, Helium, Carbon, Oxygen) events
The AMS-02 RICH Imager Prototype - In-Beam Tests with 20 GeV/c per Nucleon Ions -
A prototype of the AMS Cherenkov imager (RICH) has been tested at CERN by
means of a low intensity 20 GeV/c per nucleon ion beam obtained by
fragmentation of a primary beam of Pb ions. Data have been collected with a
single beam setting, over the range of nuclear charges 2<Z<~45 in various beam
conditions and using different radiators. The charge Z and velocity beta
resolutions have been measured.Comment: 4 pages, contribution to the ICRC 200
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) of the AMS experiment
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the
International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing
Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and
velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96
photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built
and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the
in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158
GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported.
The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to
different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged
nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the
design goals. Charge separation up to Fe and velocity resolution of the order
of 0.1% for singly charged particles are obtained.Comment: 29th International Conference on Cosmic Rays (Pune, India
