    Teacher Professional Development in One K-12 School District in Rhode Island: A Study of Perceptions

    The purpose of the qualitative phase of this study was to investigate teachers’ perceptions of professional development and the extent to which teachers believe it expands their knowledge and skills and improves student learning. Teachers from an urban ring district in Rhode Island were asked to participate in a focus group discussion. A thorough analysis of the content of the responses to focus group questions was completed. In general, teachers felt that the most effective professional development experiences had been on topics of their choice and those facilitated by teachers. According to focus group results, collaboration and relevancy were two additional characteristics of effective professional development. The results may assist districts, policy makers, and designers of professional development in the quest for more personalized professional learning

    Flora and Fauna in East Asian Art is the fourth annual exhibition curated by students enrolled in the Art History Methods course. This exhibition highlights the academic achievements of six student curators: Samantha Frisoli ’18, Daniella Snyder ’18, Gabriella Bucci ’19, Melissa Casale ’19, Keira Koch ’19, and Paige Deschapelles ’20. The selection of artworks in this exhibition considers how East Asian artists portrayed similar subjects of flora and fauna in different media including painting, prints, embroidery, jade, and porcelain.     Croatodirus casalei Giachino & Jalžić, new species from N Velebit, Lubenovac, Slovačka jama pothole, and C. ozimeci Casale, Giachino & Jalžić new species, from Lokve, Lokvarka špilja cave, are described. The morphological features of the new taxa are compared with those of the type species of the genus (C. bozicevici Casale, Giachino & Jalžić, 2000). The genus is confirmed as a homogeneous, well characterized and monophyletic unit, and is attributed to the phyletic lineage of Anthroherpon. Velebitodromus, new genus, smidai new species, is described from N Velebit, Lubenovac, Mali kuk, Slovačka jama pothole. Owing to both external features and structures of male and female genitalia, the genus is attributed to the phyletic lineage of Anthroherpon, and is recognized as related to the genera Anthroherpon Reitter, 1889, and Paranthrophilon Reitter, 1889.U radu su opisane Croatodirus casalei Giachino & Jalžić, nova vrsta sa Sjevernog Velebita (Lubenovac, Mali kuk, Slovačka jama) i C. ozimeci Casale, Giachino & Jalžić, nova vrsta iz Lokava (špilja Lokvarka). Njihova morfološka svojstva uspoređuju se s onima tipske vrste ovog roda (C. bozicevici Casale, Giachino & Jalžić, 2000). Rod se potvrđuje kao homogen, jasno raspoznatljiv i monofiletički, te je pridodan filetičkoj liniji Anthroherpon. Novi rod Velebitodromus s novom vrstom smidai opisan je također sa Sjevernog Velebita (Lubenovac, Slovačka jama). Zbog vanjskih osobina i zbog građe muških i ženskih genitalija, rod je pridodan filetičkoj liniji Anthroherpon, i prepoznaje se kao srodan rodovima Anthroherpon Reitter, 1889 i Paranthrophilon Reitter, 1889

    Immunomodulators for Asthma

    New information regarding the molecular mechanisms of allergic disorders has led to a variety of novel therapeutic approaches. This article briefly reviews the pathogenesis of asthma and allergic diseases, discusses the rationale behind using immunomodulators in these diseases; and examines the therapeutic effects of immunomodulators on allergic diseases. There are a number of immunomodulators that have been developed for the treatment of allergic disorders. Some have looked very promising in pre-clinical trials, but have not shown significant benefits in human clinical trials thus indicating the disparity between mouse models and human asthma. This review focuses on immunomodulators that are in human clinical trials and not molecules in pre-clinical development

    LIMIX: genetic analysis of multiple traits

    Multi-trait mixed models have emerged as a promising approach for joint analyses of multiple traits. In principle, the mixed model framework is remarkably general. However, current methods implement only a very specific range of tasks to optimize the necessary computations. Here, we present a multi-trait modeling framework that is versatile and fast: LIMIX enables to exibly adapt mixed models for a broad range of applications with different observed and hidden covariates, and variable study designs. To highlight the novel modeling aspects of LIMIX we performed three vastly different genetic studies: joint GWAS of correlated blood lipid phenotypes, joint analysis of the expression levels of the multiple transcript-isoforms of a gene, and pathway-based modeling of molecular traits across environments. In these applications we show that LIMIX increases GWAS power and phenotype prediction accuracy, in particular when integrating stepwise multi-locus regression into multi-trait models, and when analyzing large numbers of traits.     Genomic prediction of the recombination rate variation in barley - A route to highly recombinogenic genotypes

    Meiotic recombination is not only fundamental to the adaptation of sexually reproducing eukaryotes in nature but increased recombination rates facilitate the combination of favourable alleles into a single haplotype in breeding programmes. The main objectives of this study were to (i) assess the extent and distribution of the recombination rate variation in cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), (ii) quantify the importance of the general and specific recombination effects, and (iii) evaluate a genomic selection approach’s ability to predict the recombination rate variation. Genetic maps were created for the 45 segregating populations that were derived from crosses among 23 spring barley inbreds with origins across the world. The genome‐wide recombination rate among populations ranged from 0.31 to 0.73 cM/Mbp. The crossing design used in this study allowed to separate the general recombination effects (GRE) of individual parental inbreds from the specific recombination effects (SRE) caused by the combinations of parental inbreds. The variance of the genome‐wide GRE was found to be about eight times the variance of the SRE. This finding indicated that parental inbreds differ in the efficiency of their recombination machinery. The ability to predict the chromosome or genome‐wide recombination rate of an inbred ranged from 0.80 to 0.85. These results suggest that a reliable screening of large genetic materials for their potential to cause a high extent of genetic recombination in their progeny is possible, allowing to systematically manipulate the recombination rate using natural variation

    Conservation implications of sea turtle nesting trends: elusive recovery of a globally important loggerhead population

    Abstract Understanding population status and trends is important for developing and evaluating management and conservation actions for threatened species. Monitoring population status of marine organisms is especially challenging. Because sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs and nests are easily counted, these counts are commonly used as an index of abundance and population trends. Nest counts do not provide a direct index of adult female population abundance because females typically lay more than one nest per year and most do not reproduce every year. This study attempts for the first time to investigate the likelihood that observed fluctuations of nest counts represent inter‐annual changes of the adult female population by accounting for uncertainty in reproductive rate parameters. We analyzed 30 yr of reproductive data from the largest nesting loggerhead sea turtle population worldwide, breeding in Florida (USA), and for the three Recovery Units and seven Management Units therein. Nest counts followed a general non‐monotonic trend with wide fluctuations that corresponded to decreasing and increasing trends during short intervals. When we accounted for uncertainty in both clutch frequency and remigration interval, there was no evidence for an increasing or a declining trend in the breeding female population across the entire period. Despite extensive conservation efforts and protections for loggerheads in Florida and the wider USA, we did not find evidence of a strong population recovery. We recommend maintaining a high level of protection, addressing persistent anthropogenic threats, continued collection of rigorous nest‐count data, and monitoring reproductive parameters to better link nest counts to adult female population abundance. Our results demonstrate the need for caution in using nest counts as a direct proxy for adult female population status, as it may lead to unsupported conclusions potentially detrimental to conservation. Therefore, we recommend to always translating nest trends to at least adult female trends, including uncertainty in reproductive parameters. Our approach can be exported to other populations, even where reproductive parameters are not available. Applying high parameter uncertainty obtained from other populations can help identifying unequivocal population changes; that is, nest trends unlikely justified by uncertainty and poor knowledge of reproductive parameters
