    The continuation of the excavation and consolidation projects in the megaliths of the municipality of Alcántara allows us to change and enrich the data of the first season. The Alcántara group of tombs is confirmed as of great interest. Although unpublished hitherto, they permit us to propose certain questions about the location of the funerary deposits and, indeed, about the economic capacity of groups which have been thought to be poor, retarded and marginal.La continuación de los trabajos de excavación y consolidación en los dólmenes del término de Alcántara, permite matizar y enriquecer los datos de la primera campaña. El grupo de Alcántara se confirma como de alto interés. De resultar completamente inédito por lo que se refiere a sus materiales y a la presencia de grafías megalíticas, se dibuja ahora como especialmente rico, con ajuares bien conservados. La situación de los mismos, su calidad y variedad de materias primas nos permiten proponer una serie de cuestiones sobre ubicación de los depósitos funerarios y, desde luego, sobre la capacidad económica de unos grupos sociales que se suponían pobres, retardatarios y marginales

    We present the first results of the excavation of megaliths in the municipality of Alcántara (Cáceres), aimed to their consolidation and restoration. They are built of slate and possess materials and engravings that indicate the existence of exchange net works in this sector of the Tejo, which is traditionally interpreted as marginal and practically depopulated in the IV and III millennium b. C. Of note is the presence of a grave with plain Bell Beaker pottery, vessel and bowl dished omphalos base, and sheet metal.Se dan a conocer los primeros resultados de la excavación de dólmenes en el término de Alcántara (Cáceres), con el objeto de su consolidación y restauración. Se trata de arquitecturas en pizarra con el interés de poseer grabados megalíticos y materiales que indican la existencia de redes de intercambio en este sector del Tajo, tradicionalmente interpretado como marginal y prácticamente deshabitado en el transcurso del IV y III milenio a.C. Destaca la presencia de un ajuar campaniforme liso con vaso, cuenco con umbo y laminita metálica

    “Falling Behind,” “Letting Go,” and Being “Outsprinted” as Distinct Features of Pacing in Distance Running

    Introduction: In distance running, pacing is characterized by changes in speed, leading to runners dropping off the leader’s pace until a few remain to contest victory with a final sprint. Pacing behavior has been well studied over the last 30 years, but much remains unknown. It might be related to finishing position, finishing time, and dependent on critical speed (CS), a surrogate of physiologic capacity. We hypothesized a relationship between CS and the distance at which runners “fell behind” and “let go” from the leader or were “outsprinted” as contributors to performance. Methods: 100-m split times were obtained for athletes in the men’s 10,000-m at the 2008 Olympics (N = 35). Split times were individually compared with the winner at the point of “falling behind” (successive split times progressively slower than the winner), “letting go” (large increase in time for distance compared with winner), or “outsprinted” (falling behind despite active acceleration) despite being with the leader with 400 m remaining. Results: Race times ranged between 26:55 and 29:23 (world record = 26:17). There were 3 groups who fell behind at ∼1000 (n = 11), ∼6000 (n = 16), and ∼9000 m (n = 2); let go at ∼4000 (n = 10), ∼7000 (n = 14), and ∼9500 m (n = 5); or were outkicked (n = 6). There was a moderate correlation between CS and finishing position (r = .82), individual mean pace (r = .79), “fell behind” distance (r = .77), and “let go” distance (r = .79). D′ balance was correlated with performance in the last 400 m (r = .87). Conclusions: Athletes displayed distinct patterns of falling behind and letting go. CS serves as a moderate predictor of performance and final placing. Final placing during the sprint is related to preservation of D′ balance

    The 1970’s volcanic eruption at Deception Island (West-Antarctica) and fault-related activity: the Maria’s Fault

    Este trabajo analiza la formación de un escarpe de falla asociado a la erupción freatomagmática que ocurrió en 1970 en la Isla Decepción (Antártida Occidental). El hecho de tener información de fotografías aéreas previas a su desarrollo (1968) y una imagen de satélite de alta resolución (2003) permite establecer la formación de dicho escarpe, la evolución de la red de drenaje y la presencia de terrazas fluviales levantadas. A partir de esta información, llevamos a cabo una campaña de campo durante el verano austral de 2007, con el fin de realizar una serie de trincheras a lo largo del escarpe. De toda la información expuesta, se constata un movimiento de componente inverso a lo largo de la falla con 1 km de ruptura superficial y 20 cm de salto, afectando a los depósitos piroclásticos de la erupción de 1970. Tres modelos podrían explicar dicha actividad: (1) Terremoto inverso de tamaño pequeño-moderado (5<M<6) posterior a la erupción de 1970, (2) Reactivación de una falla previa asociada a la inyección o migración de un dique somero durante el proceso eruptivo y (3) Actividad asísmica de tipo creep a lo largo del plano de falla post terremoto.This work addresses the presence of a superficial rupture fault scarp in relationship with the phreatomagmatic eruption occurred in 1970 at Deception Island, West Antarctica. We have analysed aerial photographs (1968) previous to the eruption and contemporaneous high resolution satellite image (Quickbird, 2003). This information was relevant to establish the scarp morphology, fluvial network variations and uplifted fluvial terraces. Accordingly and during the austral summer of 2007, we carried out a field survey with the purpose to perform several paleoseismic trenches across the fault scarp. This analysis showed a reverse fault movement through 1 km of superficial rupture with 20 cm of vertical throw. This activity affected to the pyroclastic volcano sedimentary sequence of the 1970’s eruption. We propose three models that could explain this activity: (1) Reverse small-moderate earthquake (5<M<6) triggered by the 1970`s eruption, (2) Reactivation of a previous fault as a consequence of dike injection and/or magma migration in relationship with the eruptive process and (3) Aseismic fault creep activity post-earthquake.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEMinisterio de Educación y Ciencia (MEC)pu

    BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in males with familial breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Results of a Spanish multicenter study

    Producción CientíficaMale breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease that represents <1 % of all breast cancers (BCs). We analyze the results of a multicenter study performed in Spanish familial MBC including family history of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOCS) and clinicopathological features. We also study the relationship between BRCA1/BRCA2 mutational status in male relatives affected with cancer (MAC) and, family history and tumor types. The study included 312 men index cases with family history of HBOCS and 61 MAC BRCA1/2 mutation-carriers. Family history, histological grade (HG), clinicopathological and immunohistochemistry data were collected. BRCA1/2 mutation analyses were performed by direct sequencing or screening methods and the large rearrangements by multiplex ligation dependent probe amplification. We found 49 mutation-carriers (15.7 %), 95.9 % with BRCA2 mutations. BRCA2 mutation-carriers were associated with families with at least one MBC and one BC in female (type II; p = 0.05). Strong association were found between the presence of pathogenic mutations in MBCs and the advanced HG (p = 0.003). c.658_659delTG, c.2808_2811delACAA, c.6275_6276delTT and c.9026_9030delATCAT were the most prevalent mutations. In 61 MAC we found 20 mutations in BRCA1 and 41 in BRCA2. For MAC we show that mutational status was differentially associated with family history (p = 0.018) and tumor type, being BRCA2 mutations linked with BC and prostatic cancer (p = 0.018). MBC caused by BRCA1/2 mutations define two types of MBCs. The most frequent caused by BRCA2 mutation linked to type II families and the rarest one attributed to BRCA1 mutation. Tumor associated with MAC suggest that only BRCA2 mutations have to do with a specific type of cancer (BC and prostatic cancer); but the linkage to tumors is questionable for BRCA1 mutations

    Elevated Autoantibodies in Subacute Human Spinal Cord Injury Are Naturally Occurring Antibodies

    Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in long-term neurological and systemic consequences, including antibody-mediated autoimmunity, which has been related to impaired functional recovery. Here we show that autoantibodies that increase at the subacute phase of human SCI, 1 month after lesion, are already present in healthy subjects and directed against non-native proteins rarely present in the normal spinal cord. The increase of these autoantibodies is a fast phenomenon–their levels are already elevated before 5 days after lesion–characteristic of secondary immune responses, further supporting their origin as natural antibodies. By proteomics studies we have identified that the increased autoantibodies are directed against 16 different nervous system and systemic self-antigens related to changes known to occur after SCI, including alterations in neural cell cytoskeleton, metabolism and bone remodeling. Overall, in the context of previous studies, our results offer an explanation to why autoimmunity develops after SCI and identify novel targets involved in SCI pathology that warrant further investigation
