Introduction. Chemsex refers to the practice of intentional sexual intercourse under the

Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of green synthesis silver nanoparticles targeting skin and soft tissue infectious agents
Combining traditional medicine with nanotechnology therefore opens the door to innovative strategies for treating skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and also contributes to the fight against the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Acanthospermum australe (Loefl.) Kuntze is a medicinal plant used by indigenous peoples in northeastern Argentina to treat SSTIs. Spherical and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of 14 ± 2 nm were synthesized from the aqueous extract of A. australe and silver nitrate. The antimicrobial activity against main species causing SSTIs and cytotoxicity on peripheral blood mononuclear cells of AgNP solution and its synthesis components were evaluated. Compared to its synthesis components, AgNP solution showed greater antimicrobial activity and lower cytotoxicity. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs was due to the silver and not to the metabolites of the aqueous extract present on the surface of the nanoparticles. The plant extract played an important role in the formation of stable AgNPs and acted as a modulator of cytotoxic and immune responses.Fil: Mussin, Javier Esteban.

cuestionario Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
Study objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of psychoeducational group therapy for
major depression (mild/moderate symptoms) in Primary Care patients.
Methods: The study is a controlled, randomised clinical trial on a sample of 231 people over
20 years of age diagnosed with major depression according to the ICD-10 seen in 13 Primary
Health Care in Barcelona. Out of the total sample, 85 presented a mild episode (BDI +9 and
-18) and 146 a moderate episode (BDI +19 and -29) according to the Beck Depression
Inventory (BDI). The treatment group (TG) (n = 119) received a psychoeducational group
programme (12 sessions of 90 minutes each, run by two nurses), while the control group
(CG) (n = 112) received the usual treatment. Patients were assessed at the start, after
therapy (3 months), and at 6 and 9 months follow-up. The principal endpoints were the BDI,
remission of depressive symptoms based on the BDI and the EuroQoL-5D-3L (EQ-5D).
A sub-analysis was also carried out on patients who had never received pharmacological
antidepressant treatment before taking part in the study. In this case, the sample was made
up of 106 patients (50 in the TG and 56 in the CG).
To assess the impact of this treatment on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), a subanalysis
was carried out on patients who had correctly completed the EQ-5D at baseline,
after therapy and at 6 and 9 months follow-up. In this case, the sample comprised 224
patients (115 in the TG and 109 in the CG).
Main results: The patients with mild depressive symptoms in the treatment group showed a
greater remission of the symptoms compared with the control group: 56.80% vs. 31.30%
after therapy (p = 0.009) and 64.90% vs. 37.50% at 9-month follow-up (p = 0.006). In the
same sample of patients, statistically significant differences were obtained between groups in
the BDI after therapy (p = 0.016; d’ = 0.51) and at 9-month follow-up (p = 0.048, d’ =
0.44). In the general sample and in the subgroup with moderate symptoms, the analyses
only showed significant differences between groups in the post-therapy BDI: p = 0.02 (d’ =
0.29) and p = 0.010 (d’ = 0.47) respectively.
In the subgroup of patients without pharmacological treatment on starting the study,
significant differences were observed in the remission of symptoms post-therapy and at
6-month follow-up (p = 0.001 and 0.012 respectively), but the observed differences only
tended toward statistical significance at 9-month follow-up (p = 0.064). The analyses also
showed significant differences in the BDI after therapy (p = 0.008, d’ = 0.55), but not at 6
and 9 months.
Considering HRQoL, the results showed significant differences between groups in the EQ-5D
index at 3-month follow-up in the general sample (p = 0.022, d’ = 0.41) and for the
subgroup with moderate symptoms (p = 0.045, d’ = 0.47). Significant differences were also
found in the EQ-5D VAS at 3 months (general sample p = 0.008 and d’ = 0.48; moderate
patients p = 0.016 and d’ = 0.57). No differences were found between groups at 6 and 9
months.
Conclusions: Psychoeducational group therapy is an effective short- and long-term treatment
for patients with mild depressive symptoms, but only in the short term for patients with
moderate symptoms. It is also shown to be effective in the short term for patients who are
not treated with antidepressant medication before receiving the psychoeducational therapy.
The therapy improves HRQoL in the short term, and this improvement remained stable
during follow-up over 9 months, especially in the group of patients with moderate symptoms
Cysteine string protein-α is essential for the high calciumsensitivity of exocytosis in a vertebrate synapse
Cysteine string protein (CSPa) is a synaptic vesicle protein present in most central and peripheral nervous system synapses.
Previous studies demonstrated that the deletion of CSPa results in postnatal sensorial and motor impairment and premature lethality.
To understand the participation of CSPa in neural function in vertebrates, we have studied the properties of synaptic transmission of
motor terminals in wild-type and CSPa knockout mice. Our results demonstrate that, in the absence of CSPa, fast Ca2+-triggered
release was not affected at postnatal day (P)14 but was dramatically reduced at P18 and P30 without a change in release kinetics.
Although mutant terminals also exhibited a reduction in functional vesicle pool size by P30, further analysis showed that
neurotransmission could be ‘rescued’ by high extracellular [Ca2+] or by the presence of a phorbol ester, suggesting that an
impairment in the fusion machinery, or in vesicle recycling, was not the primary cause of the dysfunction of this synapse. The specific
shift to the right of the Ca2+ dependence of synchronous release, and the lineal dependence of secretion on extracellular [Ca2+] in
mutant terminals after P18, suggests that CSPa is indispensable for a normal Ca2+ sensitivity of exocytosis in vertebrate mature
synapses
Preferred sources of help for mental health problems among Chilean adolescents: a descriptive study
Background: A timely search for professional help regarding mental health issues in adolescents is critical in preventing severe disorders. However, adolescents generally tend not to seek help. This investigation aimed to study Chilean adolescents’ willingness to seek help in mental health issues by identifying their preferred help-seeking sources. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional-correlational study with 493 high school students between 14 and 19 years of age (mean ± standard deviation = 16.28 ± 1.29). The instruments we used were the general help-seeking questionnaire (vignette version), adapted and validated in Chile, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: Data showed that adolescents are more willing to seek help from informal rather than from formal sources. We identified no sex differences in terms of willingness to seek help from formal sources. However, males were more willing to seek help from informal sources. Conclusions: Similar to other cultures, Chilean adolescents are more willing to seek help from informal sources regarding mental health problems
