    PVD-grown antibacterial Ag-TiN films on piezoelectric PVDF substrates for sensor applications

    This work reports on Ti1-xAgx and Ag-TiNx electrodes deposited by dc/pulsed dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with the purpose to develop sensors for prosthesis. In Ti1-xAgx electrodes, silver content was varied from 0 to 100 at.%; and for Ag-TiNx electrodes, the nitrogen content was varied between 34 to 43 at.% and the Ti/Ag ratio changed from 12.2 to 5.2. The antibacterial activity of the samples was assessed by agar diffusion method. Interestingly, samples from the Ag-TiNx series presented antibacterial activity, in contrast to the samples from Ti1-xAgx series. XPS results showed that the as-deposited samples from the Ag-TiNx series exhibited silver clusters smaller than 4 nm. In order to deepen the results obtained, samples were analysed after the Halo test (antibacterial test), and XPS analyses showed the disappearance of these Ag clusters in agreement with the SEM results, which displayed a visible aggregation and a significant decrease in the number of Ag clusters, suggesting that silver nanoparticles aggregated and diffused through the agar killing bacteria or inhibiting their grown in the vicinity. All results show that Ag-TiNx electrodes are more promising candidates to be used in PVDF sensor protection than Ti1-xAgx electrodesS. M.     PVD-grown antimicrobial thin films on PVDF substrates for sensors applications

    Electroactive polymers are the most interesting class of polymers used as smart materials in various applications, such as the development of sensors and actuators for biomedical applications in areas as smart prosthesis, implantable biosensors and biomechanical signal monitoring, among others. For acquiring or applying the electrical signal from/to the piezoelectric material, suitable electrodes can be produced from Ti based coatings with tailored multifunctional properties, as conductivity and antibacterial characteristics, obtained by the inclusion of Ag. This work reports on Ti1-xAgx electrodes and Ag-TiNy electrodes deposited by d. c. and pulsed magnetron sputtering at room temperature on poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF). In the first system (Ti1-xAgx electrodes), silver content was varied from 0-100 at. %. For the second system (Ag-TiNy electrodes), the nitrogen content changed between 0 to 40.3 at. % by increasing the nitrogen gas flow between 0 sccm and 15 sccm and the ratio Ti/Ag changed from 13.4 to 2.2 being clearly the visible decrease on the Ti content in the reactive mode. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the deposition conditions preserve the polymer structure and suggested the presence of crystalline Ti phase in pure titanium coating and fcc-Ag phase in pure silver coating for the Ti1-xAgx system. For the Ag-TiNy system it is possible to detect a fcc TiN structure and a fcc Ag phase. Sheet resistivity values show a typical behavior of a binary alloy system, varying between 0.12 and 28.5 /sq for the Ti1-xAgx electrodes. For the second system the sheet resistivity decrease with the nitrogen content from 12.0 /sq with 0 at. % to 2.8 /sq for 40.3 at. % of N. The piezoelectricity of the different samples show similar values, showing values from 19.6 to 27.6 pCN-1 for the Tix-1Agx system and 13.6 pCN-1 as minimum for the Ag- TiNy system, achieved for the highest N content. In order to assess the mechanical behavior of the as-sputtered films, the film/substrate system was loaded unidirectionally using a tensile machine. The stress-strain curves were analyzed and correlated with the structural data. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the samples was assessed and it was verified that samples from the second series (Ag-TiNy) present antibacterial activity, in contrast of the first series (Ti1-xAgx)

    Development of Ag/TiO2NM-treated leathers with antibacterial activity for footwear industry

    This work aims to contribute to the industrial development of safer and advanced leathers using nanomaterials (NMs) that are based in titanium oxide doped with silver (Ag-TiO2NMs). These NMs present an ecological alternative to volatile organic biocides and organic solvents, frequently used nowadays. Safe application of these NMs brings added value to footwear and leather products and reduces the bulk chemical wide pollution. These newly developed materials are expected to be useful for footwear manufacturing (for common or professional use) with advanced protection against bacteria and fungus, which are the most common cause of feet infections, for either common or professional use. Hence, the main aim of this work is the improvement of leather footwear in order to overcome the feet infections and ensure minimum risk of human skin penetration. In order to accomplish the main aim, the cytotoxicity, antimicrobial and self-cleaning properties of leather surface, treated with Ag-TiO2NMs by sputtering deposition were assessed. The Ag-TiO2 coatings were deposited onto leather substrates by DC-pulsed reactive magnetron sputtering using two targets, Ti and Ag, in an Ar + O2 atmosphere. Compositional analysis was achieved by X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX). Contact angle of the coatings was measured and the results show that with the introduction of silver in TiO2 microstructure promotea an increase in hydrophobicity.     Nano-galvanic coupling for enhanced Ag+ release in ZrCN-Ag films: antibacterial application

    The antibacterial properties of materials developed for medical devices with embedded silver nanoparticles are enhanced by controlling the release of silver ions. In this study, a simple experimental procedure for the augmentation of the silver ion release from ZrCN-Ag coatings is described. The silver nanoparticles are embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix within the ZrCN coatings, to create nano-galvanic couples between the silver and the carbon phases. The galvanic couple promotes the oxidation of silver, and consequently, increases the silver release. It is demonstrated that coatings with a lower silver content, but integrating amorphous carbon phases, can release similar or even a larger amount of Ag+ ions than those with higher Ag content having just ZrCN and Ag phases. The antibacterial tests demonstrate that coatings with silver nanoparticles encapsulated into amorphous phase reveal a larger bacterial zone of inhibition compared to samples with similar or lower silver content.     Evolution of oxidative stress biomarkers and correlation with competitive performance in two moments of the swimming training season

    Estudos têm demonstrado aumento na formação de espécies reativas de oxigênio após o esforço físico intenso. Esses eventos podem aumentar a suscetibilidade das células musculares a danos oxidativos como a peroxidação lipídica. Assim, variações na intensidade e no volume de treinamento durante a temporada podem modular o metabolismo oxidativo e influenciar a performance dos atletas. OBJETIVO: Estudar a evolução de biomarcadores de peroxidação lipídica em dois momentos de um ciclo periodizado de treinamento e relacionar com a performance competitiva de natação. MÉTODOS: Participaram do presente estudo 16 nadadores (nove do gênero masculino e sete do feminino). Amostras de sangue foram coletadas em dois períodos do ciclo de treinamento: período preparatório específico e período de polimento. Espécies reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS) e peróxidos totais foram determinados como biomarcadores de peroxidação lípidica. Creatina quinase foi determinada como parâmetro de dano celular muscular. O índice técnico alcançado no estilo de especialidade de cada atleta foi utilizado como parâmetro de performance competitiva. O índice técnico foi determinado na competição preparatória Troféu Electro Bonini realizada no período preparatório específico, e no Campeonato Paulista realizado no final do período de polimento. RESULTADOS: Foi encontrado aumento significativo (p < 0,05) no índice técnico no Campeonato Paulista (769,6 ± 51,1 pontos) em relação ao Troféu Electro Bonini (751,1 ± 55,7 pontos). Significativas reduções na concentração de TBARS (5,7 ± 2,9 vs 3,3 ± 2,2µmol/L) e peróxidos totais (45,1 ± 20,6 vs 29,6 ± 13,0, µmol H2O2/L) foram encontrados no período de polimento com relação ao período preparatório específico. O mesmo não foi encontrado para creatina quinase (123,6 ± 60,1 vs 137,4 ± 74,9U/L). CONCLUSÃO: A significativa diminuição nos biomarcadores de peroxidação lipídica decorrente do decréscimo no volume e intensidade do treinamento após o período de polimento demonstra a influência das variações do treinamento sobre o estresse oxidativo e sua possível relação com a performance.INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown increase in the formation of oxygen reactive species after intense physical exertion. These events may increase the susceptibility of muscular cells to oxidative damage such as lipid per-oxidation. Thus, variations in training intensity as well as volume during the season may modulate the oxidative stress and influence in performance of athletes. AIM: To study the evolution of lipid peroxidation biomarkers in two moments of a periodized cycle of training and correlate it with swimming competitive performance. METHODS: 16 swimmers participated in this study (9 males and 7 females). Blood samples were collected in two periods of the training cycle: specific preparation training and tapering period. Species reactive to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and total peroxides were determined as lipid peroxidation biomarkers. Creatine kinase was determined as a parameter of muscular cell damage. The technical index reached in the style of specialization of each athlete was used as a competitive performance parameter. The technical index was determined in the preparatory competition Trophy Electro Bonini carried out in the specific preparatory period and in the Championship of São Paulo State carried out in the end of the tapering period (769.6 ± 51.1 points) in comparison with the Trophy Electro Bonini (751.1 ± 55.7 points). Significant reductions In the TBARS concentration ((5.7 ± 2.9 vs 3.3 ± 2.2µmol/L) and total peroxides (45.1±20.6 vs 29.6±13.0 µmol H2O2/L) were found In the tapering period concerning the specific preparatory period. The same situation was not found for creatine kinase ((123.6 ± 60.1 vs 137.4 ± 74.9U/L).     A review on the current Status of Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal 2021: surface–atmosphere interactions

    Earth system modelling is currently playing an increasing role in weather forecasting and understanding climate change, however, the operation, deployment and development of numerical Earth system models are extremely demanding in terms of computational resources and human effort. Merging synergies has become a natural process by which national meteorological services assess and contribute to the development of such systems. With the advent of joining synergies at the national level, the second edition of the workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal was promoted by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA), in cooperation with several Portuguese Universities. The event was hosted by the University of Évora, during the period of 11–12 of November 2021. It was dedicated to surface–atmosphere interactions and allowed the exchange of experiences between experts, students and newcomers. The workshop provided a refreshed overview of ongoing research and development topics in Portugal on surface–atmosphere interaction modelling and its applications and an opportunity to revisit some of the concepts associated with this area of atmospheric sciences.     Application of non-linear techniques for daily weather data reconstruction and downscaling coarse climate data for local predictions

    Downscaling techniques aim at resolving the scale discrepancy between climate change scenarios and the resolution demanded for impact assessments. Requirements for downscaled climate, to be useful for end users, include reliable representation of precipitation intensities, temporal and spatial variability, and physical parameters consistency. This report summarizes the results of the proof of concept phase in the development and testing of a novel data reconstruction method and a downscaling algorithm based on the multiplicative random cascade disaggregation method using rainfall signals at different spatial and temporal resolutions. The Wavelet Transformed-based Multi-Resolution Analysis (WT-MRA) was used for reconstructing the historical daily rainfall data needed as input for the downscaling methodology, using satellite-derived proxy data. Comparisons with presently used software showed that in all the cases; that is, the reconstructed, generated daily or downscaled daily data, the products developed outperformed the control test by either generating more accurate outcomes or by demanding significantly less parameterizing data

    Effect of human TGF-beta on the gene expression profile of Schistosoma mansoni adult worms

    Schistosoma mansoni is responsible for schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease that affects 200 million people worldwide. Molecular mechanisms of host-parasite interaction are complex and involve a crosstalk between host signals and parasite receptors. TGF-beta signaling pathway has been shown to play an important role in S. mansoni development and embryogenesis. In particular human (h) TGF-beta has been shown to bind to a S. mansoni receptor, transduce a signal that regulates the expression of a schistosome target gene. Here we describe 381 parasite genes whose expression levels are affected by in vitro treatment with hTGF-beta. Among these differentially expressed genes we highlight genes related to morphology, development and cell cycle that could be players of cytokine effects on the parasite. We confirm by qPCR the expression changes detected with microarrays for 5 out of 7 selected genes. We also highlight a set of non-coding RNAs transcribed from the same loci of protein-coding genes that are differentially expressed upon hTCF-beta treatment. These datasets offer potential targets to be explored in order to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the possible role of hTGF-beta effects on parasite biology. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V.     Dog in sheep’s clothing: livestock depredation by free-ranging dogs may pose new challenges to wolf conservation

    Livestock depredation is a common cause of human-carnivore conflicts. In Portugal, free-ranging dogs are increasingly abundant and overlap endangered Iberian wolf territories, with reports of livestock depredation. However, the lack of awareness about dogs’ possible role as predators leads to bias against wolves in cases of damages. Our goal was to assess and compare wolf and free-ranging dog’s diet composition at southern wolf range in Portugal, to offer insights on dogs’ predatory role on livestock and its implications for the conservation of an endangered wolf subpopulation. We assessed diet composition from 107 to 95 genetically confirmed wolf and dog scats, respectively, and complemented the analysis with data from 40 attacks on livestock with successful genetic predator assignment. Scat analysis highlighted goats as the most consumed dog prey in all analysed regions, with lagomorphs, small mammals, and wild boars as second most consumed in each region, respectively. Wolves mainly relied on goats and wild boars in the west, whereas in the central region they mostly fed on birds. The dietary overlap between both canids was very high (Pianka’s index O = 0.93), showing potential for competition. Additionally, we found that dogs were the sole predators detected in most attacks (62%). Our findings highlight dogs’ role as predators of livestock, and possibly also wild species, posing a further challenge to wolf conservation. Alongside adequate husbandry practices, we emphasise the need for a stronger enforcement of the legislation on dog ownership and an effective management of the stray population to reduce human-wolf conflict.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
