    Get PDF
Abdominal duplex Doppler ultrasonography was used in two cats with hepatic encephalopathy clinical signs. The main ultrasonographic findings were: identification of a tortuous strange vessel shunting portal flow; elevated portal flow velocity; turbulence in the caudal vena cava, and reduced size of liver and hepatic portal branches. Necropsy findings were similar to that found at ultrasonographic and clinical exams. It is concluded that portosystemic shunt diagnosis may be a real hypothesis to be considered in cats with clinical signs of hepatic encephalopathy

AbstractWireless communications, e.g. Wi-Fi, have been increasingly important in the context of networked and virtual organizations and enterprise information systems. Performance is an issue of crucial importance, resulting in more reliable and efficient communications, therefore improving enterprise information system yield. Security is equally important. Laboratory measurements are made about several performance aspects of Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11g WPA point-to-point links. A contribution is given to performance evaluation of this technology under WPA encryption, using available equipments (DAP-1522 access points from D-Link and WPC600N adapters from Linksys). New detailed results are presented and discussed, namely at OSI levels 4 and 7, from TCP, UDP and FTP experiments, permitting measurements of TCP throughput, jitter, percentage datagram loss and FTP transfer rate. Comparisons are made to corresponding results obtained for open links. Conclusions are drawn about the comparative performance of the links

Transcranial duplex Doppler ultrasound was performed in 32 conscious dogs presenting ventriculomegaly detected in B-mode, obtaining measures of lateral ventricles and resistance parameters of main cerebral arteries before and after 30 days of clinical treatment. The animals were distributed divided in two groups: group 1, dogs that presented remission or decrease of the neurological signs of the disease after clinical therapy; and group 2, dogs that displayed worsening of the neurological signs or clinical stability. The data were all presented in tables and were submitted to paired t test and to logistic regression models to evaluate the influence of the RI reduction on both groups. There was no significant influence of the variables in the B-mode. After the treatment, the mean resistive index (RI) was significantly lower for the group that presented clinical improvement. There was no significant difference of the mean RI reduction for the same artery when the right and left sides were compared. It could be concluded that transcranial duplex Doppler ultrasound is a method of cerebral hemodynamic assessment able to monitor more precisely the treatment of hydrocephalus in dogs and verify the responses.

Production of entanglement in Raman three-level systems using feedback

We examine the theoretical limits of the generation of entanglement in a damped coupled ion-cavity system using jump-based feedback. Using Raman transitions to produce entanglement between ground states reduces the necessary feedback bandwidth, but does not improve the overall effect of the spontaneous emission on the final entanglement. We find that the fidelity of the resulting entanglement will be limited by the asymmetries produced by vibrations in the trap, but that the concurrence remains above 0.88 for realistic ion trap sizes.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Wolbachia pipientis: first detection in populations of Glycaspis brimblecombei (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) and Psyllaephagus bliteus (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) in Brazil

The sucking insect, Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), is originally from Australia and reduces the productivity of Eucalyptus crops. The parasitoid Psyllaephagus bliteus Riek (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is the main agent used in the integrated management of G. brimblecombei. Endosymbionts, in insects, are important in the adaptation and protection of their hosts to the environment. The intracellular symbionts Wolbachia, induces reproductive changes such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, feminization, male death and parthenogenesis. The objective of this study was to report the first record of Wolbachia pipientis in populations of G. brimblecombei and of its parasitoid P. bliteus in the field in Brazil. Branches with adults of G. brimblecombei and P. bliteus were collected from eucalyptus trees in commercial farms in six Brazilian states and, after emergence, the insects obtained were frozen at -20 °C. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to detect the Wolbachia endosymbiont. Wolbachia pipientis was identified in individuals of G. brimblecombei and its parasitoid P. bliteus from populations of the counties of Agudos and Mogi-Guaçu (São Paulo State), Itamarandiba (Minas Gerais State) and São Jerônimo da Serra (Paraná State) in Brazi

Influence of Oxygen content on the electrochemical behavior of Ta1-xOx coatings

In this study, Ta1-xOx coatings were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering aiming at the enhancement of the electrochemical stability stainless steel 316L. The coatings were produced using variable oxygen content in order to determine its influence on the films morphological features and corrosion resistance. Structural and morphological characteristics were correlated with the corrosion behavior in artificial saliva. Potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests were complemented with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine the electrochemical behavior of the coatings. The results reveal a more protective behavior of the coatings as the oxygen amount increases in the films, as well as pitting inhibition in the coated stainless steel, independently of the film composition. A synergetic effect between Ta2O5 and phosphate-based passive layers is suggested as the protective mechanisms of the coatings; while the more active electrochemical behavior of low oxygen content films is evidenced as a consequence of the metallic tantalum on the surface with a more open morphology and larger density of defects on the surface. This research is sponsored by FEDER funds through the program COMPETE – Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade – by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia , in the framework of the Strategic Projects PEST-C/FIS/UI607/2013, and PEst-C/EME/UI0285/2013, and with a PhD fellowship SFRH/BD/98199/2013. Passivation and dissolution mechanisms in ordered anodic tantalum oxide nanostructures

Tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) nanostructures exhibit outstanding electrical and optical properties, as well as, high chemical resistance and stability. These materials have great potential for biomedical, catalysis, semiconductors and energy applications due to their large surface area and high specific charge, when arranged in nanoporous or nanotubular morphologies. In order to obtain these structures, an anodization process, which is inexpensive, reproducible and easy to scale up, is used. Yet, depending on the anodization conditions, the formation of a nanoporous or nanotubular layer is difficult to stabilize during the anodization process. In this regard, anodized tantalum oxide nanostructures were produced to understand the effect of the anodization conditions, including electrolyte concentration, potential and time. The nanopores or nanotubes morphologies, their chemical composition and structure were investigated by FIB-SEM, double-corrected TEM-STEM and EDS. We found that it is necessary to have high acid concentrations (mixture of H2SO4 with HF) to be able to form nanoporous or nanotubular structures. Despite the capacity of HF to dissolve and create anodic oxide nanostructures, the amount of H2SO4 concentration in the mixture is very important, leading to a dimple morphology. Furthermore, the increase of the anodization potential/electrical field clearly leads to an increase in the dimples diameter. This research is sponsored by FEDER funds through the program COMPETE -Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Funding UIDB/04650/2020, and UID/EMS/00285/2020 and with a PhD fellowship SFRH/BD/98199/2013.The authors thank the financial support in the framework of HEALTHYDENT -POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030708 and PTDC/CTM-NAN/4242/2014 projects. This work was supported by FCT, through IDMEC, under LAETA, project UIDB/50022/2020.The authors would like to acknowledge that this project has received funding from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation H2020, scheme COFUND -Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programmes, under Grant Agreement 713640
