Vector bundles on the projective line and finite domination of chain complexes
Finitely dominated chain complexes over a Laurent polynomial ring in one
indeterminate are characterised by vanishing of their Novikov homology. We
present an algebro-geometric approach to this result, based on extension of
chain complexes to sheaves on the projective line. We also discuss the
K-theoretical obstruction to extension.Comment: v1: 11 page
Stability of the doped antiferromagnetic state of the t-t'-Hubbard model
The next-nearest-neighbour hopping term t' is shown to stabilize the AF state
of the doped Hubbard model with respect to transverse perturbations in the
order- parameter by strongly suppressing the intraband particle-hole processes.
For a fixed sign of t', this stabilization is found to be significantly
different for electron and hole doping, which qualitatively explains the
observed difference in the degree of robustness of the AF state in the
electron-doped (Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}) and hole-doped (La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4})
cuprates. The t'-U phase diagram is obtained for both signs of the t' term,
showing the different regions of stability and instability of the doped
antiferromagnet. Doping is shown to suppress the t'-induced frustration due to
the competing interaction J'. A study of transverse spin fluctuations in the
metallic AF state reveals that the decay of magnons into particle-hole
excitations yields an interesting low-energy result \Gamma \sim \omega for
magnon damping.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Exploring CP Violation through Correlations in B --> pi K, B_d --> pi^+pi^-, B_s --> K^+K^- Observable Space
We investigate allowed regions in observable space of B --> pi K, B_d -->
pi^+pi^- and B_s --> K^+K^- decays, characterizing these modes in the Standard
Model. After a discussion of a new kind of contour plots for the
system, we focus on the mixing- induced and direct CP asymmetries of the decays
B_d --> pi^+pi^- and B_s--> K^+K^-. Using experimental information on the
CP-averaged B_d --> pi^{+/-}K^{+/-} and B_d --> pi^+pi^- branching ratios, the
relevant hadronic penguin parameters can be constrained, implying certain
allowed regions in observable space. In the case of B_d --> pi^+pi^-, an
interesting situation arises now in view of the recent B-factory measurements
of CP violation in this channel, allowing us to obtain new constraints on the
CKM angle gamma as a function of the B^0_d--\bar{B^0_d} mixing phase
phi_d=2beta, which is fixed through A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> J/psi K_S) up to a
twofold ambiguity. If we assume that A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> pi^+pi^-) is
positive, as indicated by recent Belle data, and that phi_d is in agreement
with the ``indirect'' fits of the unitarity triangle, also the corresponding
values for gamma around 60 degrees can be accommodated. On the other hand, for
the second solution of phi_d, we obtain a gap around gamma ~ 60 degrees. The
allowed region in the space of A_{CP}^{mix}(B_s --> K^+K^-) and
A_{CP}^{dir}(B_s --> K^+K^-) is very constrained in the Standard Model, thereby
providing a narrow target range for run II of the Tevatron and the experiments
of the LHC era.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures. More detailed introduction and a few

The institutional shaping of management: in the tracks of English individualism
Globalisation raises important questions about the shaping of economic action by cultural factors. This article explores the formation of what is seen by some as a prime influence on the formation of British management: individualism. Drawing on a range of historical sources, it argues for a comparative approach. In this case, the primary comparison drawn is between England and Scotland. The contention is that there is a systemic approach to authority in Scotland that can be contrasted to a personal approach in England. An examination of the careers of a number of Scottish pioneers of management suggests the roots of this systemic approach in practices of church governance. Ultimately this systemic approach was to take a secondary role to the personal approach engendered by institutions like the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but it found more success in the different institutional context of the USA. The complexities of dealing with historical evidence are stressed, as is the value of taking a comparative approach. In this case this indicates a need to take religious practice as seriously as religious belief as a source of transferable practice. The article suggests that management should not be seen as a simple response to economic imperatives, but as shaped by the social and cultural context from which it emerges
The rotational modes of relativistic stars: Numerical results
We study the inertial modes of slowly rotating, fully relativistic compact
stars. The equations that govern perturbations of both barotropic and
non-barotropic models are discussed, but we present numerical results only for
the barotropic case. For barotropic stars all inertial modes are a hybrid
mixture of axial and polar perturbations. We use a spectral method to solve for
such modes of various polytropic models. Our main attention is on modes that
can be driven unstable by the emission of gravitational waves. Hence, we
calculate the gravitational-wave growth timescale for these unstable modes and
compare the results to previous estimates obtained in Newtonian gravity (i.e.
using post-Newtonian radiation formulas). We find that the inertial modes are
slightly stabilized by relativistic effects, but that previous conclusions
concerning eg. the unstable r-modes remain essentially unaltered when the
problem is studied in full general relativity.Comment: RevTeX, 29 pages, 31 eps figure
Observing Direct CP Violation in Untagged B-Meson Decays
Direct CP violation can exist in untagged B-meson decays to self-conjugate,
three-particle final states; it would be realized as a population asymmetry in
the untagged decay rate across the mirror line of the Dalitz plot of the
three-body decay. We explore the numerical size of this direct CP-violating
effect in a variety of B-meson decays to three pseudoscalar mesons; we show
that the resulting asymmetry is comparable to the partial rate asymmetry in the
analogous tagged decays, making the search for direct CP violation in the
untagged decay rate, for which greater statistics accrue, advantageous.Comment: 31 pages, REVTeX4, 1 eps figure, references added, typos corrected,

Determination of the Deep Inelastic Contribution to the Generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Integral for the Proton and Neutron
The virtual photon absorption cross section differences [sigma_1/2-sigma_3/2]
for the proton and neutron have been determined from measurements of polarised
cross section asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV
longitudinally polarised positrons from polarised 1H and 3He internal gas
targets. The data were collected in the region above the nucleon resonances in
the kinematic range nu < 23.5 GeV and 0.8 GeV**2 < Q**2 < 12 GeV**2. For the
proton the contribution to the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral was
found to be substantial and must be included for an accurate determination of
the full integral. Furthermore the data are consistent with a QCD
next-to-leading order fit based on previous deep inelastic scattering data.
Therefore higher twist effects do not appear significant.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, revte
Observation of a Coherence Length Effect in Exclusive Rho^0 Electroproduction
Exclusive incoherent electroproduction of the rho^0(770) meson from 1H, 2H,
3He, and 14N targets has been studied by the HERMES experiment at squared
four-momentum transfer Q**2>0.4 GeV**2 and positron energy loss nu from 9 to 20
GeV. The ratio of the 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, known as the
nuclear transparency, was found to decrease with increasing coherence length of
quark-antiquark fluctuations of the virtual photon. The data provide clear
evidence of the interaction of the quark- antiquark fluctuations with the
nuclear medium.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 3 figure
Flavor Decomposition of the Polarized Quark Distributions in the Nucleon from Inclusive and Semi-inclusive Deep-inelastic Scattering
Spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive cross sections for the production of
positively and negatively charged hadrons have been measured in deep-inelastic
scattering of polarized positrons on polarized hydrogen and 3He targets, in the
kinematic range 0.023<x<0.6 and 1 GeV^2<Q^2<10 GeV^2. Polarized quark
distributions are extracted as a function of x for up $(u+u_bar) and down
(d+d_bar) flavors. The up quark polarization is positive and the down quark
polarization is negative in the measured range. The polarization of the sea is
compatible with zero. The first moments of the polarized quark distributions
are presented. The isospin non-singlet combination Delta_q_3 is consistent with
the prediction based on the Bjorken sum rule. The moments of the polarized
quark distributions are compared to predictions based on SU(3)_f flavor
symmetry and to a prediction from lattice QCD.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures (eps format), 10 tables in Latex New version

Micronuclei induced by reverse transcriptase inhibitors in mononucleated and binucleated cells as assessed by the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay
This study evaluated the clastogenic and/or aneugenic potential of three nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (zidovudine - AZT, lamivudine - 3TC and stavudine - d4T) using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay in human lymphocyte cultures. All three inhibitors produced a positive response when tested in binucleated cells. The genotoxicity of AZT and 3TC was restricted to binucleated cells since there was no significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei in mononucleated cells. This finding indicated that AZT and 3TC caused chromosomal breakage and that their genotoxicity was related to a clastogenic action. In addition to the positive response observed with d4T in binucleated cells, this drug also increased the frequency of micronuclei in mononucleated cells, indicating clastogenic and aneugenic actions. Since the structural differences between AZT and 3TC and AZT and d4T involve the 3' position in the 2'-deoxyribonucleoside and in an unsaturated 2',3',dideoxyribose, respectively, we suggest that an unsaturated 2', 3', dideoxyribose is responsible for the clastogenic and aneugenic actions of d4T
