Multi-Channel Electron Transfer Reactions: An Analytically Solvable Model
We propose an analytical method for understanding the problem of
multi-channel electron transfer reaction in solution, modeled by a particle
undergoing diffusive motion under the influence of one donor and several
acceptor potentials. The coupling between the donor potential and acceptor
potentials are assumed to be represented by Dirac Delta functions. The
diffusive motion in this paper is represented by the Smoluchowski equation. Our
solution requires the knowledge of the Laplace transform of the Green's
function for the motion in all the uncoupled potentials.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:0903.306
Separability of Black Holes in String Theory
We analyze the origin of separability for rotating black holes in string
theory, considering both massless and massive geodesic equations as well as the
corresponding wave equations. We construct a conformal Killing-Stackel tensor
for a general class of black holes with four independent charges, then identify
two-charge configurations where enhancement to an exact Killing-Stackel tensor
is possible. We show that further enhancement to a conserved Killing-Yano
tensor is possible only for the special case of Kerr-Newman black holes. We
construct natural null congruences for all these black holes and use the
results to show that only the Kerr-Newman black holes are algebraically special
in the sense of Petrov. Modifying the asymptotic behavior by the subtraction
procedure that induces an exact SL(2)^2 also preserves only the conformal
Killing-Stackel tensor. Similarly, we find that a rotating Kaluza-Klein black
hole possesses a conformal Killing-Stackel tensor but has no further
enhancements.Comment: 27 page
Particle dynamics near extreme Kerr throat and supersymmetry
The extreme Kerr throat solution is believed to be non-supersymmetric.
However, its isometry group SO(2,1) x U(1) matches precisely the bosonic
subgroup of N=2 superconformal group in one dimension. In this paper we
construct N=2 supersymmetric extension of a massive particle moving near the
horizon of the extreme Kerr black hole. Bosonic conserved charges are related
to Killing vectors in a conventional way. Geometric interpretation of
supersymmetry charges remains a challenge.Comment: V2: 10 pages; discussion in sect. 4 and 5 extended, acknowledgements

Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand descriptions of Kerr-Newman black holes
Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand metrics are explicitly constructed for the
Kerr-Newman family of charged rotating black holes. These descriptions are free
of all coordinate singularities; moreover, unlike the Doran and other proposed
metrics, an extra tunable function is introduced to ensure all variables in the
metrics remain real for all values of the mass M, charge Q, angular momentum
aM, and cosmological constant \Lambda > - 3/(a^2). To describe fermions in
Kerr-Newman spacetimes, the stronger requirement of non-singular vierbein
one-forms at the horizon(s) is imposed and coordinate singularities are
eliminated by local Lorentz boosts. Other known vierbein fields of Kerr-Newman
black holes are analysed and discussed; and it is revealed that some of these
descriptions are actually not related by physical Lorentz transformations to
the original Kerr-Newman expression in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates - which is
the reason complex components appear (for certain ranges of the radial
coordinate) in these metrics. As an application of our constructions the
correct effective Hawking temperature for Kerr black holes is derived with the
method of Parikh and Wilczek.Comment: 5 pages; extended to include application to derivation of Hawking

Schwarzschild black hole levitating in the hyperextreme Kerr field
The equilibrium configurations between a Schwarzschild black hole and a
hyperextreme Kerr object are shown to be described by a three-parameter
subfamily of the extended double-Kerr solution. For this subfamily, its Ernst
potential and corresponding metric functions, we provide a physical
representation which employs as arbitrary parameters the individual Komar
masses and relative coordinate distance between the sources. The calculation of
horizon's local angular velocity induced in the Schwarzschild black hole by the
Kerr constituent yields a simple expression inversely proportional to the
square of the distance parameter.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure; improved versio
Social feasibility assessments in conservation translocations
This is the final version. Available on open access from Cell Press via the DOI in this recordImproving the effectiveness of conservation translocations could contribute to reversing global biodiversity loss. Although evaluations of ecological factors affecting translocation outcomes are commonplace, consideration of human social factors remains rare, hindering improvements to this conservation practice. We analysed 550 translocation case studies to explore the inclusion of social factors in project feasibility assessments. Reviewed projects often failed to assess social feasibility, and assessments, where attempted, tended to be narrow in scope. Consequently, challenges such as proactively addressing conflict often remained unaddressed. Insufficient knowledge sharing and prioritisation of ecological feasibility, to the detriment of social feasibility, remain barriers to effective planning. Successful outcomes of translocations are linked to early assessment of social feasibility and to the establishment of long-term commitments between people, places, and partners.Vincent Wildlife TrustDurrell Wildlife Conservation TrustUniversity of Exete
Black Holes in Modified Gravity (MOG)
The field equations for Scalar-Tensor-Vector-Gravity (STVG) or modified
gravity (MOG) have a static, spherically symmetric black hole solution
determined by the mass with two horizons. The strength of the gravitational
constant is where is a parameter. A regular
singularity-free MOG solution is derived using a nonlinear field dynamics for
the repulsive gravitational field component and a reasonable physical
energy-momentum tensor. The Kruskal-Szekeres completion of the MOG black hole
solution is obtained. The Kerr-MOG black hole solution is determined by the
mass , the parameter and the spin angular momentum . The
equations of motion and the stability condition of a test particle orbiting the
MOG black hole are derived, and the radius of the black hole photosphere and
the shadows cast by the Schwarzschild-MOG and Kerr-MOG black holes are
calculated. A traversable wormhole solution is constructed with a throat
stabilized by the repulsive component of the gravitational field.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Upgraded version of paper to match published

Testing for hybridisation of the Critically Endangered Iguana delicatissima on Anguilla to inform conservation efforts
The Caribbean Island of Anguilla in the north-eastern Lesser Antilles is home to one of the last populations of the Critically Endangered Lesser Antillean iguana Iguana delicatissima. This population is highly threatened primarily because of hybridisation with non-native Iguana iguana. This study assesses the degree of hybridisation between Anguilla’s Iguana species firstly using morphological characteristics and then genetic analysis to validate the genetic integrity of morphologically identified I. delicatissima. We also examined the genetic diversity of Anguilla’s I. delicatissima population, and that of a population on the nearby island of Îlet Fourchue, St Barthélemy. Forty-five iguanas were captured in Anguilla and 10 in St Barthélemy, and sequences from 3 nuclear and 1 mtDNA genes were obtained for each. Of the 45 iguanas captured in Anguilla, 22 were morphologically identified as I. delicatissima, 12 as I. iguana and the remainder were identified as hybrids. Morphological assignments were all confirmed by genetic analyses except for one I. iguana and one hybrid individual. These two individuals appeared likely to have originated following ancestral hybridisation events several generations ago. A significant paucity of genetic diversity was found within Anguillan and St Barthélemy I. delicatissima populations, with a single haplotype being identified for each of the three nuclear genes and the mtDNA sequence. This study highlights the urgency for immediate action to conserve Anguilla’s remnant I. delicatissima population. Protection from hybridisation will require translocation to I. iguana-free offshore cays, with supplementary individuals being sourced from neighbouring islands to enhance the genetic diversity of the population
