Structural Covariance in the Hard Sphere Fluid
We study the joint variability of structural information in a hard sphere
fluid biased to avoid crystallisation and form fivefold symmetric geometric
motifs. We show that the structural covariance matrix approach, originally
proposed for on-lattice liquids [Ronceray and Harrowell, JCP 2016], can be
meaningfully employed to understand structural relationships between different
motifs and can predict, within the linear-response regime, structural changes
related to motifs distinct from that used to bias the system
Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Lung Cancer Screening Health Belief Scales
Background: Lung cancer screening is a recent recommendation for long-term smokers. Understanding individual health beliefs about screening is a critical component in future efforts to facilitate patient-provider conversations about screening participation.
Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the development and psychometric testing of 4 new scales to measure lung cancer screening health beliefs (perceived risk, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy).
Methods: In phase I, 4 scales were developed from extensive literature review, item modification from existing Breast and Colorectal Cancer Screening Health Belief Scales, focus groups with long-term smokers, and evaluation/feedback from a panel of 10 content experts. In phase II, we conducted a survey of 497 long-term smokers to assess the final scales’ reliability and validity.
Results: Phase I: content validity was established with the content expert panel. Phase II: internal consistency reliability of the scales was supported with Cronbach’s α’s ranging from .88 to .92. Construct validity was established with confirmatory factor analysis and testing for differences between screeners and nonscreeners in theoretically proposed directions.
Conclusions: Initial testing supports the scales are valid and reliable. These new scales can help investigators identify long-term smokers more likely to screen for lung cancer and are useful for the development and testing of behavioral interventions regarding lung cancer screening.
Implications for Practice: Development of effective interventions to enhance shared decision making about lung cancer screening between patients and providers must first identify factors influencing the individual’s screening participation. Future efforts facilitating patient-provider conversations are better informed by understanding the perspective of the individual making the decision
Current-carrying cosmic string loops 3D simulation: towards a reduction of the vorton excess problem
The dynamical evolution of superconducting cosmic string loops with specific
equations of state describing timelike and spacelike currents is studied
numerically. This analysis extends previous work in two directions: first it
shows results coming from a fully three dimensional simulation (as opposed to
the two dimensional case already studied), and it now includes fermionic as
well as bosonic currents. We confirm that in the case of bosonic currents,
shocks are formed in the magnetic regime and kinks in the electric regime. For
a loop endowed with a fermionic current with zero-mode carriers, we show that
only kinks form along the string worldsheet, therefore making these loops
slightly more stable against charge carrier radiation, the likely outcome of
either shocks or kinks. All these combined effects tend to reduce the number
density of stable loops and contribute to ease the vorton excess problem. As a
bonus, these effects also may provide new ways of producing high energy cosmic

Dilatonic current-carrying cosmic strings
We investigate the nature of ordinary cosmic vortices in some scalar-tensor
extensions of gravity. We find solutions for which the dilaton field condenses
inside the vortex core. These solutions can be interpreted as raising the
degeneracy between the eigenvalues of the effective stress-energy tensor,
namely the energy per unit length U and the tension T, by picking a privileged
spacelike or timelike coordinate direction; in the latter case, a phase
frequency threshold occurs that is similar to what is found in ordinary neutral
current-carrying cosmic strings. We find that the dilaton contribution for the
equation of state, once averaged along the string worldsheet, vanishes, leading
to an effective Nambu-Goto behavior of such a string network in cosmology, i.e.
on very large scales. It is found also that on small scales, the energy per
unit length and tension depend on the string internal coordinates in such a way
as to permit the existence of centrifugally supported equilibrium
configuration, also known as vortons, whose stability, depending on the very
short distance (unknown) physics, can lead to catastrophic consequences on the

Social Norms and Risk Perception: Predictors of Distracted Driving Behavior Among Novice Adolescent Drivers
AbstractPurposeAdolescent drivers are at elevated crash risk due to distracted driving behavior (DDB). Understanding parental and peer influences on adolescent DDB may aid future efforts to decrease crash risk. We examined the influence of risk perception, sensation seeking, as well as descriptive and injunctive social norms on adolescent DDB using the theory of normative social behavior.Methods403 adolescents (aged 16–18 years) and their parents were surveyed by telephone. Survey instruments measured self-reported sociodemographics, DDB, sensation seeking, risk perception, descriptive norms (perceived parent DDB, parent self-reported DDB, and perceived peer DDB), and injunctive norms (parent approval of DDB and peer approval of DDB). Hierarchical multiple linear regression was used to predict the influence of descriptive and injunctive social norms, risk perception, and sensation seeking on adolescent DDB.Results92% of adolescents reported regularly engaging in DDB. Adolescents perceived that their parents and peers participated in DDB more frequently than themselves. Adolescent risk perception, parent DDB, perceived parent DDB, and perceived peer DDB were predictive of adolescent DDB in the regression model, but parent approval and peer approval of DDB were not predictive. Risk perception and parental DDB were stronger predictors among males, whereas perceived parental DDB was stronger for female adolescents.ConclusionsAdolescent risk perception and descriptive norms are important predictors of adolescent distracted driving. More study is needed to understand the role of injunctive normative influences on adolescent DDB. Effective public health interventions should address parental role modeling, parental monitoring of adolescent driving, and social marketing techniques that correct misconceptions of norms related to around driver distraction and crash risk
Tracking Assaultâ injured, Drugâ using Youth in Longitudinal Research: Followâ up Methods
ObjectivesViolence is one of the leading causes of death among youth ages 14 to 24. Hospitalâ and emergency department (ED)â based violence prevention programs are increasingly becoming a critical part of public health efforts; however, evaluation of prevention efforts is needed to create evidenceâ based best practices. Retention of study participants is key to evaluations, although little literature exists regarding optimizing followâ up methods for violently injured youth. This study aims to describe the methods for retention in youth violence studies and the characteristics of hardâ toâ reach participants.MethodsThe Flint Youth Injury (FYI) Study is a prospective study following a cohort of assaultâ injured, drugâ using youth recruited in an urban ED, and a comparison population of drugâ using youth seeking medical or nonâ violenceâ related injury care. Validated survey instruments were administered at baseline and four followâ up time points (6, 12, 18, and 24 months). Followâ up contacts used a variety of strategies and all attempts were coded by type and level of success. Regression analysis was used to predict contact difficulty and followâ up interview completion at 24 months.ResultsA total of 599 patients (ages 14â 24) were recruited from the ED (mean ± SD age = 20.1 ± 2.4 years, 41.2% female, 58.2% African American), with followâ up rates at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of 85.3%, 83.7% 84.2%, and 85.3%, respectively. Participant contact efforts ranged from two to 53 times per followâ up time frame to complete a followâ up appointment, and more than 20% of appointments were completed off site at community locations (e.g., participantsâ homes, jail/prison). Participants who were younger (p < 0.05) and female (p < 0.01) were more likely to complete their 24â month followâ up interview. Participants who sought care in the ED for assault injury (p < 0.05) and had a substance use disorder (p < 0.01) at baseline required fewer contact attempts to complete their 24â month followâ up, while participants reporting a fight within the immediate 3 months before their 24â month followâ up (p < 0.01) required more intensive contact efforts.ConclusionsThe FYI study demonstrated that achieving high followâ up rates for a difficultâ toâ track, violentlyâ injured ED population is feasible through the use of established contact strategies and a variety of interview locations. Low-speed Aerodynamic Investigations of a Hybrid Wing Body Configuration
Two low-speed static wind tunnel tests and a water tunnel static and dynamic forced-motion test have been conducted on a hybrid wing-body (HWB) twinjet configuration. These tests, in addition to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, have provided a comprehensive dataset of the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of this nonproprietary configuration. In addition to force and moment measurements, the tests included surface pressures, flow visualization, and off-body particle image velocimetry measurements. This paper will summarize the results of these tests and highlight the data that is available for code comparison or additional analysis
Multi-fluid cosmology: An illustration of fundamental principles
Our current understanding of the Universe depends on the interplay of several
distinct "matter" components, which interact mainly through gravity, and
electromagnetic radiation. The nature of the different components, and possible
interactions, tends to be based on the notion of coupled perfect fluids (or
scalar fields). This approach is somewhat naive, especially if one wants to be
able to consider issues involving heat flow, dissipative mechanisms, or
Bose-Einstein condensation of dark matter. We argue that a more natural
starting point would be the multi-purpose variational relativistic multi-fluid
system that has so far mainly been applied to neutron star astrophysics. As an
illustration of the fundamental principles involved, we develop the formalism
for determining the non-linear cosmological solutions to the Einstein equations
for a general relativistic two-fluid model for a coupled system of matter
(non-zero rest mass) and "radiation" (zero rest mass). The two fluids are
allowed to interpenetrate and exhibit a relative flow with respect to each
other, implying, in general, an anisotropic Universe. We use initial conditions
such that the massless fluid flux dominates early on so that the situation is
effectively that of a single fluid and one has the usual
Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. We find that there is a
Bianchi I transition epoch out of which the matter flux dominates. The
situation is then effectively that of a single fluid and the spacetime evolves
towards the FLRW form. Such a transition opens up the possibility of imprinting
observable consequences at the specific scale corresponding to the transition

Frailty in older patients undergoing emergency laparotomy
Objective: This study aimed to document the prevalence of frailty in older adults undergoing emergency laparotomy and to explore relationships between frailty and postoperative morbidity and mortality.
Summary Background Data: The majority of adults undergoing emergency laparotomy are older adults (≥65 y) that carry the highest mortality. Improved understanding is urgently needed to allow development of targeted interventions.
Methods: An observational multicenter (n=49) UK study was performed (March–June 2017). All older adults undergoing emergency laparotomy were included. Preoperative frailty score was calculated using the progressive Clinical Frailty Score (CFS): 1 (very fit) to 7 (severely frail). Primary outcome measures were the prevalence of frailty (CFS 5–7) and its association to mortality at 90 days postoperative. Secondary outcomes included 30-day mortality and morbidity, length of critical care, and overall hospital stay.
Results: A total of 937 older adults underwent emergency laparotomy: frailty was present in 20%. Ninety-day mortality was 19.5%. After age and sex adjustment, the risk of 90-day mortality was directly associated with frailty: CFS 5 adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 3.18 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.24–8.14] and CFS 6/7 aOR 6·10 (95% CI, 2.26–16.45) compared with CFS 1. Similar associations were found for 30-day mortality. Increasing frailty was also associated with increased risk of complications, length of Intensive Care Unit, and overall hospital stay.
Conclusions: A fifth of older adults undergoing emergency laparotomy are frail. The presence of frailty is associated with greater risks of postoperative mortality and morbidity and is independent of age. Frailty scoring should be integrated into acute surgical assessment practice to aid decision-making and development of novel postoperative strategies
