    Comparison of Muscle Physiology and Performance Outcomes from Either Relative Intensity or Repetition Maximum Training

    The main purpose of this dissertation was to compare performance and physiological outcomes of between a repetition maximum (RM) and a relative intensity using sets-and-repetitions (RISR) resistance training (RT) program in well-trained lifters. Fifteen subjects underwent RT 3 d·wk-1 for 10-weeks in either a RM group (n=8) or RISR group (n=7). The RM group achieved a relative maximum each day while the RISR group trained based on percentages. Testing included percutaneous needle biopsies of the vastus lateralis, ultrasonography, unweighted (g to assess within and between-group alterations. RISR from pre-to-post yielded statistically significant increases in Type I CSA (p=0.018), Type II CSA (p=0.012), ACSA (p=0.002), unweighted (p=0.009) and 20 kg SJ JH (p=0.012), unweighted (p=0.003) and 20kg SJ PPa (p=0.026), IPF (ppSR increased in unweighted (p=0.023) and 20kg SJ JH (p=0.014), and 20kg SJ PPa (p=0.026) from pre-to-post taper. RM yielded statistically significant increases from only pre-to-post taper for 20kg SJ JH (p=0.003) and CMJ JH (p=0.031). Additionally, RM had a statistically significant pre-to-post decrease in RFD from 0-50ms (p=0.018) and 0-100ms (p=0.014). Between-group effect sizes supported RISR for Type I CSA (g=0.48), Type II CSA (g=0.50), ACSA (g=1.03), all MYH isoforms (g=0.31-0.87), all SJ variables (g=0.64-1.07), unweighted and 20kg CMJ JH (g=0.76-0.97), unweighted CMJ PPa (g=0.35), IPFa (g=0.20), and all RFD (g=0.31-1.25) time-points except 0-200ms; with all other effects being of trivial magnitude (gSR training yielded greater improvements in vertical jump, RFD and maximal strength compared RM training. These performances results may, in part, be explained mechanistically by the superior physiological adaptations observed in the RISR group within the skeletal muscle. Taken together, these data support the use of RISR training in well-trained populations

    Relationship Between Concentric Velocity at Varying Intensity in the Back Squat Using Wireless Inertia Sensor

    The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Minimal Velocity Threshold (MVT) of 1RM and repetitions until failure testing conditions using the back squat exercise. Fourteen injury-free males with experience in the back squat volunteered to perform a 1RM and a submaximal (70% 1RM) repetitions until failure test, each during different testing sessions. Mean Concentric Velocity (MCV) was collected using a wireless inertia-measuring device. The last successful repetition in either condition was considered the MVT. A very small relationship between 1RM and repetitions until failure MVT was found (r=-0.135). There were no significant differences between testing sessions and the effect size was small (Cohen’s d=0.468) between each testing session. The small relationship and the non-significant p-value might suggest there is individual variance with MVT. In conclusion, the results of this study do not support a general MVT for the back squat comparing 1RM and submaximal repetitions until failure

    Accessing, managing, and mobilizing an ELAN-based language documentation corpus: the Kwaras and Namuti tools

    This paper introduces Kwaras and Namuti, two new tools for building, managing, accessing, and mobilizing ELAN-based language documentation corpora. Kwaras integrates WAV files, ELAN annotations, and document metadata into a web-based corpus, allowing immediate access to annotations and recordings. Namuti builds from Kwaras and enables different uses of language documentation products for different audiences and provides links from linguistic analyses to language documentation corpora. The main goal of these new tools is three-fold: (i) to facilitate the use of language documentation in linguistic analysis; (ii) to increase transparency of documentation-based analyses, providing interested users full access to the data on which generalizations are based and contextualization of the projects that generated the data; and (iii) to enable uses of language corpora that may serve the interests of multiple stakeholders, including academic researchers and community members interested in language maintenance and revitalization. We provide a basic overview of how Kwaras and Namuti work, lay out instructions on how to download and use Kwaras, and discuss what uses it currently supports. This article also issues a call for increased collaboration between linguists, community members, language activists, and software developers to further develop these and other similar resources.National Foreign Language Resource Cente

    Development of a composite model derived from cardiopulmonary exercise tests to predict mortality risk in patients with mild-to-moderate heart failure

    Objective: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is used to predict outcome in patients with mild-to-moderate heart failure (HF). Single CPET-derived variables are often used, but we wanted to see if a composite score achieved better predictive power. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patient records at the Department of Cardiology, Castle Hill Hospital, Kingston-upon-Hull. 387 patients [median (25th-75th percentile)] [age 65 (56-72) years; 79% males; LVEF 34 (31-37) %] were included. Patients underwent a symptomlimited, maximal CPET on a treadmill. During a median follow up of 8.6 ± 2.1 years in survivors, 107 patients died. Survival models were built and validated using a hybrid approach between the bootstrap and Cox regression. Nine CPET-derived variables were included. Z-score defined each variable's predictive strength. Model coefficients were converted to a risk score. Results: Four CPET-related variables were independent predictors of all-cause mortality in the survival model: the presence of exertional oscillatory ventilation (EOV), increasing slope of the relation between ventilation and carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO2 slope), decreasing oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES), and an increase in the lowest ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide (VEqCO2 nadir). Individual predictors of mortality ranged from 0.60 to 0.71 using Harrell’s C-statistic, but the optimal combination of EOV + VE/VCO2 slope + OUES + VEqCO2 nadir reached 0.75.
