    Resonance fluorescence spectrum of a \Lambda-type quantum emitter close to a metallic nanoparticle

    We theoretically study the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a three-level quantum emitter coupled to a spherical metallic nanoparticle. We consider the case that the quantum emitter is driven by a single laser field along one of the optical transitions. We show that the development of the spectrum depends on the relative orientation of the dipole moments of the optical transitions in relation to the metal nanoparticle. In addition, we demonstrate that the location and width of the peaks in the spectrum are strongly modified by the exciton-plasmon coupling and the laser detuning, allowing to achieve controlled strongly subnatural spectral line. A strong antibunching of the fluorescent photons along the undriven transition is also obtained. Our results may be used for creating a tunable source of photons which could be used for a probabilistic entanglement scheme in the field of quantum information processing

    Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloThe silylant 3-cloropropyltriethoxysilyl was anchored over silica gel in anhydrous conditions in order to react with thiourea to obtain modified silica gel with thiouronium. The aim to obtain an inorganic support that is able to hijack metals from the VIII group such as palladium. The product was characterized by Sbet and FTIR infrared spectroscopy. For the determination of the structure in the modified silica gel NMR spectra of silicon and carbon were preformed in solid state. The coordination form of the modified silica gel to the metal was studied computationally in the context of the DFT theory, using the ADF code. This was a collaborative work with "Fundación Chile" for the recuperation of precious metals from the mining industry.http://ref.scielo.org/gk7rm

    The dynamics of cultivation and floods in arable lands of Central Argentina

    Although floods in watersheds have been associated with land-use change since ancient times, the dynamics of flooding is still incompletely understood. In this paper we explored the relations between rainfall, groundwater level, and cultivation to explain the dynamics of floods in the extremely flat and valuable arable lands of the Quinto river watershed, in central Argentina. The analysis involved an area of 12.4 million hectare during a 26-year period (1978–2003), which comprised two extensive flooding episodes in 1983–1988 and 1996–2003. Supported by information from surveys as well as field and remote sensing measurements, we explored the correlation among precipitation, groundwater levels, flooded area and land use. Flood extension was associated to the dynamics of groundwater level. While no correlation with rainfall was recorded in lowlands, a significant correlation (<i>P</i><0.01) between groundwater and rainfall in highlands was found when estimations comprise a time lag of one year. Correlations between groundwater level and flood extension were positive in all cases, but while highly significant relations (<i>P</i><0.01) were found in highlands, non significant relations (<i>P</i>>0.05) predominate in lowlands. Our analysis supports the existence of a cyclic mechanism driven by the reciprocal influence between cultivation and groundwater in highlands. This cycle would involve the following stages: (a) cultivation boosts the elevation of groundwater levels through decreased evapotranspiration; (b) as groundwater level rises, floods spread causing a decline of land cultivation; (c) flooding propitiates higher evapotranspiration favouring its own retraction; (d) cultivation expands again following the retreat of floods. Thus, cultivation would trigger a destabilizing feedback self affecting future cultivation in the highlands. It is unlikely that such sequence can work in lowlands. The results suggest that rather than responding directly and solely to the same mechanism, floods in lowlands may be the combined result of various factors like local rainfall, groundwater level fluctuations, surface and subsurface lateral flow, and water-body interlinking. Although the hypothetical mechanisms proposed here require additional understanding efforts, they suggest a promising avenue of environmental management in which cultivation could be steered in the region to smooth the undesirable impacts of floods

    Determination of non-polar and mid-polar monomeric oxidation products of stigmasterol during thermo-oxidation

    Oxidation products of stigmasterol were characterised by their polarity and molecular size using solid phase extraction (SPE) and high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) methods. Monomeric oxides were studied further by GC–MS and GC–FID. The focus was on identifying and quantifying non-polar and mid-polar monomeric oxides after SPE fractionation. Commercial stigmasterol was subjected to 180 °C up to 3 h. Six oxidation products were identified by GC–MS in the non-polar and mid-polar monomeric fractions; all appeared during the first hour of heating. Quantification by GC–FID showed an increase in the non-polar and mid-polar oxidation products during the heating time, and their amounts reached values of 6.1 and 47.0 g/kg of commercial stigmasterol, respectively. Polar oxidation products commonly measured reached a value of 193 g/kg after 1 h of heating, while after 3 h of heating their concentration was only 164 g/kg. Since as much as 550 g/kg of stigmasterol was decomposed, the monomeric products explained only partly the stigmasterol loss. Dimeric and polymeric products contributed to 165 g/kg of the loss showing the importance of polymerisation reactions at 180 °C

    Modelling of the reef benthic habitat distribution within the Cabrera National Park (Western Mediterranean Sea)

    Habitat spatial distribution is essential to know where to focus the protection of the seafloor resources. In this work, the bathymetry and backscatter seabed data show the importance of remote sensing applications and geospatial tools to have detailed information of the areas studied. The highresolution data enable to explore the environmental characteristics of selected Mediterranean habitats. These data were combined with available samples for ground truthing the habitat distribution model in the southeast of Cabrera National Park. The habitat modelling results show the high value of the studied area for ecological research. Unique communities of large filterers, including sponges, ascidians and bryozoans, were detected in this area. This study presents a potential habitat distribution map of the vulnerable reef habitat 1170, protected under the UE-Directive on the conservation of Habitats, Flora and Fauna, on the southeast margin of Cabrera Island.Versión del edito

    Differentiated postnatal growth of the neurocranium and splanchnocranium in domestic equines

    Geometric morphometry of 42 equine skulls from different domestic breeds was used. A digital photograph of the dorsal plane of each skull was obtained, on which were placed seven craniometric landmarks, involving both the neuro and the splanchnocranium. It is verified that the ontogenic process of domestic equids conforms to the CREA rule (Cranial Evolutionary Allometric), by which there is a common allometric pattern among taxa of mammals, by which the smaller species would have shorter faces and skulls wider than larger species. A dolichoprosopy correlated with dolichocephaly is accepted, or in other words, a facial hypermorphosis (since the facial width also has a behavior similar to that of the length of the face) parallel to the increase in the size of the head for domestic equids.Se recurrió al estudio por morfometría geométrica de 42 cráneos de equinos de diversas razas domésticas. Se obtuvo una fotografía digital del plano dorsal de cada cráneo, sobre la que se situaron siete hitos craneométricos, que incluían puntos, tanto del neuro como del viscerocráneo. Se comprueba que el proceso ontogénico de los équidos domésticos se ajusta a la regla del CREA («Cranial Evolutionary Allometric»), por la que existe un patrón alométrico común entre taxones de mamíferos, por el cual las especies más pequeñas presentarían caras más cortas y cráneos más anchos que las especies de mayor tamaño. Se acepta una dolicoprosopia correlacionada con la dolicocefalia, o dicho de otro modo, una hipermorfosis facial (puesto que la anchura facial también tiene un comportamiento similar al de la longitud de la cara) paralela al aumento del tamaño de la cabeza para los équidos domésticos
