Chasing Traps in Tiny Worms: Uncovering the Presence of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Caenorhabditis elegans

Since 2020, the immune system has become humankind’s most powerful weapon to the challenges we have faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequently, scientists throughout the world have combined their brilliant minds to explore how spectacular our immune system is, and we have found new components of its mechanism(s) and pathways. Among those components, Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) stand out for their important contribution to humans’ innate immune system. NETs have revolutionized the way scientists approach treatments for viral and bacterial infections. To understand NETs, I experimented with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to provide a better explanation and evidence on why these traps could become a key factor for modern medical treatments. A crucial topic covered in this thesis is the importance of the nematode C. elegans as a research model in medicine. I explained the advantages of choosing this organism over others, and why it could be exploited in the research community to perform research studies. Some advantages are, its simplicity and genetic tractability make it an excellent organism for genetic studies, while its transparency allows for the visualization of cellular processes and signaling pathways. C. elegans also has a well-characterized nervous system and shares many genetic and physiological similarities with humans, making it a relevant model for studying human diseases and drug discovery. 7 Additionally, C. elegans is inexpensive and easy to maintain in the laboratory, making it a valuable tool for large-scale genetic and chemical screens. Overall, C. elegans has become a widely used model organism in various fields of research, contributing to our understanding of biological processes and disease mechanisms. NETs are important for providing a more personalized approach to medicine. In this research, I aimed to investigate the presence of NETs in the model organism C. elegans. Although the study was limited in scope due to time constraints, the findings presented in this thesis provide valuable information that can aid future researchers in this area of study. The study of NETs has emerged as an important area of research, and the information presented in this thesis may serve as a foundation for further investigations into the role of NETs in C. elegans and their potential implications for broader biological processes

The present article deals with a topic might appear of marginal importance in the context of medieval history, thas is, the expulsion of the Cordoban conspirators after the Revolt of Arrabal de Cordoba (818) and their conquest of the Island of Crete in 827, Nevertheless, it becomes important when one realizes the implications in the Eastern Mediterranean, when this area was transformed into a “Moslem Lake” –as it has been called by Henri Pirenne. A Measurement Strategy for SDG Thematic Indicators 4.7.4 and 4.7.5 Using International Large Scale Assessments in Education

The aim of this document is to describe and implement a measurement strategy for the SDG Thematic Indicators 4.7.4 and 4.7.5 using International Large-Scale Assessments (ILSAs) in Education. Building on two reports previously published by the Global Alliance to Monitoring Learning (GAML) describing a proposal of a measurement strategy for these two indicators, we use items from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the International Civic and Citizenship Education Survey (ICCS) to fit measurement models, generate scores, and propose a method to establish cutoff points for these indicators.This document is divided into four main sections. In the first one, we describe the methods and tools we used for constructing both the scores to measure each indicator and the cut-off points to identify the individuals who reach the corresponding targets. The second and the third sections correspond to the implementation of the proposed methodological procedures for each of the thematic indicators covered by this document and for their subscales. As a way of summarizing the full set of scores, the fourth section includes a set of tables showing the average percentage of students who reach cut-off points set for any sub-scale for each indicator

Las asambleas de León c. 1118 y el concejo como base de la estructura social y participación ciudadana

1188 es el año en que se registró oficialmente, por vez primera, la asistencia a la asamblea regia de hombres elegidos de cada ciudad junto a los grupos tradicionales que participaban en la política regia leonesa llevada desde ese momento por Alfonso IX. En base a esta coyuntura histórica nos preguntamos si esa aparición documental sería o no reflejo de la primera vez que esos elementos nuevos a los tradicionales concurren a este tipo de reunión llamada por el soberano leonés, y por tanto se registran documentalmente, o por el contrario, sería la primera vez que son registrados pero que desde tiempo atrás las relaciones entre la corona y la comunidades rurales han estado existiendo y colaborando. Considerando el proceso de vinculación del rey leonés y los concejos por medio del fuero, y por cierto de las bases sociales que llevaron a la organización social campesina, es que logramos determinar que se señaló a los representantes de los concejos en una seguidilla de documentos antes y después de la asamblea de Alfonso IX, lo que habla que la base social en el proceso de la toma de decisiones se ha ampliado y que de manera oficial ahora serán los sostenedores de las acciones de la monarquía leonesa

A Nonlinear Dynamic Boiler Model accounting for Highly Variable Load Conditions

This paper describes a new nonlinear dynamic model for a natural circulation boiler. The model is based on physical principles, i.e. mass, energy and momentum balances. A systematic approach is followed leading to new insights into the physics of drum water level and downcomer mass flow. The final model captures fast dynamic responses that are necessary to describe the operation of a boiler under highly variable load conditions. New features of the model include (i) a multi-compartment model for the risers, (ii) a new model for drum water level, and (iii) a new dynamic model for the flow of water in the downcomers.
