    Alpha/beta and gamma interferons are induced by infection with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus in vivo

    In contrast to the results of previous in vitro studies, experimental infection of calves with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus (ncpBVDV) was found to induce strong alpha/beta and gamma interferon responses in gnotobiotic animals. These responses were associated with depressed levels of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) in serum. The results of this study indicate that the immunosuppression caused by ncpBVDV is not associated with low interferon responses or elevated levels of TGF-β

    ProgGP: From GuitarPro Tablature Neural Generation To Progressive Metal Production

    Recent work in the field of symbolic music generation has shown value in using a tokenization based on the GuitarPro format, a symbolic representation supporting guitar expressive attributes, as an input and output representation. We extend this work by fine-tuning a pre-trained Transformer model on ProgGP, a custom dataset of 173 progressive metal songs, for the purposes of creating compositions from that genre through a human-AI partnership. Our model is able to generate multiple guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano and orchestral parts. We examine the validity of the generated music using a mixed methods approach by combining quantitative analyses following a computational musicology paradigm and qualitative analyses following a practice-based research paradigm. Finally, we demonstrate the value of the model by using it as a tool to create a progressive metal song, fully produced and mixed by a human metal producer based on AI-generated music.Comment: Pre-print accepted for publication at CMMR202

    ShredGP: Guitarist Style-Conditioned Tablature Generation

    GuitarPro format tablatures are a type of digital music notation that encapsulates information about guitar playing techniques and fingerings. We introduce ShredGP, a GuitarPro tablature generative Transformer-based model conditioned to imitate the style of four distinct iconic electric guitarists. In order to assess the idiosyncrasies of each guitar player, we adopt a computational musicology methodology by analysing features computed from the tokens yielded by the DadaGP encoding scheme. Statistical analyses of the features evidence significant differences between the four guitarists. We trained two variants of the ShredGP model, one using a multi-instrument corpus, the other using solo guitar data. We present a BERT-based model for guitar player classification and use it to evaluate the generated examples. Overall, results from the classifier show that ShredGP is able to generate content congruent with the style of the targeted guitar player. Through her large-scale installations of mundane objects, Lara Favaretto's art practice explores the absurdities of modern life, consumer culture, and obsolescence. The mechanic nature of Favaretto's works speaks to the monotony and repetition of human life, prompting the audience to contemplate themselves and the function of these objects in their lives. Much of Favaretto's work functions through the juxtaposition of binary opposites, where her celebratory visual language is thwarted by the dull nature of the subject matter. This multilayered approach exerts itself to spectacular effect with Tutti giu per terra/We all fall down (2004). Sealed in a room with four fans, rainbow-coloured confetti eddies and swirls as it falls to the ground. The isolated character of the installation emphasizes the fine line between aspiration and failure - the spectacle evolving through time into colorful exhaustion. The theme of memory is captured in the ephemeral nature of Favaretto's other works. Using the most fleeting and unlikely of objects such as a lost luggage in Lost & Found (1998) or a found painting in 225 (2014), the artist creates what she refers to as momentary monuments. These objects, once doomed to vanish are then preserved, re-purposed, and transformed into a monument of disappearance themselves. In English and French. Lara Favaretto (b.1973) is based in Turin, Italy. Her work has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions at institutions throughout the world, including MoMA PS1, New York; Salon d'Honneur du Grand Palais, Paris; dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel; and Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Turin. She is the recipient of the 2011 Querini Stampalia Prize for Young Italian Artists and the 2005 Venice Biennale Young Italian Art Prize

    DadaGP: A Dataset of Tokenized GuitarPro Songs for Sequence Models

    Originating in the Renaissance and burgeoning in the digital era, tablatures are a commonly used music notation system which provides explicit representations of instrument fingerings rather than pitches. GuitarPro has established itself as a widely used tablature format and software enabling musicians to edit and share songs for musical practice, learning, and composition. In this work, we present DadaGP, a new symbolic music dataset comprising 26,181 song scores in the GuitarPro format covering 739 musical genres, along with an accompanying tokenized format well-suited for generative sequence models such as the Transformer. The tokenized format is inspired by event-based MIDI encodings, often used in symbolic music generation models. The dataset is released with an encoder/decoder which converts GuitarPro files to tokens and back. We present results of a use case in which DadaGP is used to train a Transformer-based model to generate new songs in GuitarPro format. We discuss other relevant use cases for the dataset (guitar-bass transcription, music style transfer and artist/genre classification) as well as ethical implications. DadaGP opens up the possibility to train GuitarPro score generators, fine-tune models on custom data, create new styles of music, AI-powered songwriting apps, and human-AI improvisation

    Living on the edge: how philopatry maintains adaptive potential

    Without genetic variation, species cannot cope with changing environments, and evolution does not proceed. In endangered species, adaptive potential may be eroded by decreased population sizes and processes that further reduce gene flow such as philopatry and local adaptations. Here, we focused on the philopatric and endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting in Cape Verde as a model system to investigate the link between adaptive potential and philopatry. We produced a dataset of three complementary genomic regions to investigate female philopatric behaviour (mitochondrial DNA), male-mediated gene flow (microsatellites) and adaptive potential (major histocompatibility complex, MHC). Results revealed genetically distinct nesting colonies, indicating remarkably small-scale philopatric behaviour of females. Furthermore, these colonies also harboured local pools of MHC alleles, especially at the margins of the population's distribution, which are therefore important reserves of additional diversity for the population. Meanwhile, directional male-mediated gene flow from the margins of distribution sustains the adaptive potential for the entire rookery. We therefore present the first evidence for a positive association between philopatry and locally adapted genomic regions. Contrary to expectation, we propose that philopatry conserves a high adaptive potential at the margins of a distribution, while asymmetric gene flow maintains genetic connectivity with the rest of the population

    Potential influence of selection criteria on the demographic composition of students in an Australian medical school

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prior to 1999 students entering our MBBS course were selected on academic performance alone. We have now evaluated the impact on the demographics of subsequent cohorts of our standard entry students (those entering directly from high school) of the addition to the selection process of an aptitude test (UMAT), a highly structured interview and a rural incentive program.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Students entering from 1985 to 1998, selected on academic performance alone (N = 1402), were compared to those from 1999 to 2011, selected on the basis of a combination of academic performance, interview score, and UMAT score together with the progressive introduction of a rural special entry pathway (N = 1437).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Males decreased from 57% to 45% of the cohort, students of NE or SE Asian origin decreased from 30% to 13%, students born in Oceania increased from 52% to 69%, students of rural origin from 5% to 21% and those from independent high schools from 56% to 66%. The proportion of students from high schools with relative socio-educational disadvantage remained unchanged at approximately 10%. The changes reflect in part increasing numbers of female and independent high school applicants and the increasing rural quota. However, they were also associated with higher interview scores in females vs males and lower interview scores in those of NE and SE Asian origin compared to those born in Oceania or the UK. Total UMAT scores were unrelated to gender or region of origin.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The revised selection processes had no impact on student representation from schools with relative socio-educational disadvantage. However, the introduction of special entry quotas for students of rural origin and a structured interview, but not an aptitude test, were associated with a change in gender balance and ethnicity of students in an Australian undergraduate MBBS course.</p
