    Dynamical Masses for Pre-Main Sequence Stars: A Preliminary Physical Orbit for V773 Tau A

    We report on interferometric and radial-velocity observations of the double-lined 51-d period binary (A) component of the quadruple pre-main sequence (PMS) system V773 Tau. With these observations we have estimated preliminary visual and physical orbits of the V773 Tau A subsystem. Among other parameters, our orbit model includes an inclination of 66.0 ±\pm 2.4 deg, and allows us to infer the component dynamical masses and system distance. In particular we find component masses of 1.54 ±\pm 0.14 and 1.332 ±\pm 0.097 M_{\sun} for the Aa (primary) and Ab (secondary) components respectively. Our modeling of the subsystem component spectral energy distributions finds temperatures and luminosities consistent with previous studies, and coupled with the component mass estimates allows for comparison with PMS stellar models in the intermediate-mass range. We compare V773 Tau A component properties with several popular solar-composition models for intermediate-mass PMS stars. All models predict masses consistent to within 2-sigma of the dynamically determined values, though some models predict values that are more consistent than others.Comment: ApJ in press; 25 pages, 6 figures; data tables available in journal versio

    MR. FISCAL: The Effects of a Financial Education Curriculum on Family Medicine Residents\u27 and Fellows\u27 Financial Well-Being and Literacy

    CONTEXT: Financial education is not routinely offered during medical training. Residents and fellows thus have low financial literacy, high debt, and deficits in their financial preparedness. Poor financial literacy contributes to the ever-growing problems of physician stress, job dissatisfaction, burnout, and depression within primary care. It is postulated that implementation of a financial education curriculum for family medicine physicians-in-training will improve their sense of financial well-being and literacy. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effects of a formal financial education curriculum on family medicine residents\u27 and fellows\u27 financial well-being and literacy. DESIGN: Solomon four group. PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sample, voluntary participation. Residents and fellows at 16 family medicine residency programs (military, academic/university, and community-based) in the U.S. INTERVENTION: A standardized video-based financial education curriculum entitled Medical Residency Financial Skills Curriculum to Advance Literacy (MR. FISCAL). Topics include: money management, credit, debt management, risk management, investment and retirement planning. Educational content designed by the research team using the Institute for Financial Literacy National Standards for Adult Financial Literacy Education content. INSTRUMENT: Anonymous, web-based, 24-question survey, administered via Qualtrics. Survey is comprised of InCharge Financial Distress/Financial Well-Being (IFDFW) Scale measuring perceived levels of financial distress/well-being, plus 16 additional questions collecting demographic and self-reported financial data. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The effect of this financial education curriculum on family medicine residents’ and fellows’ financial well-being and literacy as measured by the validated and reliable IFDFW scale and comparison of pre and post-intervention self-reported financial data. RESULTS: Work-in-progress. Anticipate comparison of pretest-posttest intervention versus posttest-only control group data. Additional statistical analysis will compare level of training, type of residency program, other demographics, financial data. CONCLUSION: There is currently a paucity of information on financial well-being and literacy among family medicine residents and fellows. This financial curriculum could be shared throughout primary care if improvements are observed

    A self-consistent, multi-variate method for the determination of gas phase rate coefficients, applied to reactions of atmospheric VOCs and the hydroxyl radical

    Gas-phase rate coefficients are fundamental to understanding atmospheric chemistry, yet experimental data are not available for the oxidation reactions of many of the thousands of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) observed in the troposphere. Here a new experimental method is reported for the simultaneous study of reactions between multiple different VOCs and OH, the most important daytime atmospheric radical oxidant. This technique is based upon established relative rate concepts but has the advantage of a much higher throughput of target VOCs. By evaluating multiple VOCs in each experiment, and through measurement of the depletion in each VOC after reaction with OH, the OH + VOC reaction rate coefficients can be derived. Results from experiments conducted under controlled laboratory conditions were in good agreement with the available literature for the reaction of nineteen VOCs, prepared in synthetic gas mixtures, with OH. This approach was used to determine a rate coefficient for the reaction of OH with 2,3-dimethylpent-1-ene for the first time; k = 5.7 (±0.3) × 10–11–cm3 molecule−1 s−1. In addition, a further seven VOCs had only two, or fewer, individual OH rate coefficient measurements available in the literature. The results from this work were in good agreement with those measurements. A similar dataset, at an elevated temperature of 323 (±10) K, was used to determine new OH rate coefficients for twelve aromatic, five alkane, five alkene and three monoterpene VOC + OH reactions. In OH relative reactivity experiments that used ambient air at the University of York, a large number of different VOCs were observed, of which 23 were positively identified. 19 OH rate coefficients were derived from these ambient air samples, including ten reactions for which data was previously unavailable at the elevated reaction temperature of T = 323 (±10) K

    Developing a digital intervention for cancer survivors: an evidence-, theory- and person-based approach

    This paper illustrates a rigorous approach to developing digital interventions using an evidence-, theory- and person-based approach. Intervention planning included a rapid scoping review which identified cancer survivors’ needs, including barriers and facilitators to intervention success. Review evidence (N=49 papers) informed the intervention’s Guiding Principles, theory-based behavioural analysis and logic model. The intervention was optimised based on feedback on a prototype intervention through interviews (N=96) with cancer survivors and focus groups with NHS staff and cancer charity workers (N=31). Interviews with cancer survivors highlighted barriers to engagement, such as concerns about physical activity worsening fatigue. Focus groups highlighted concerns about support appointment length and how to support distressed participants. Feedback informed intervention modifications, to maximise acceptability, feasibility and likelihood of behaviour change. Our systematic method for understanding user views enabled us to anticipate and address important barriers to engagement. This methodology may be useful to others developing digital interventions

    A randomized single blind crossover trial comparing leather and commercial wrist splints for treating chronic wrist pain in adults

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To compare the effectiveness of a custom-made leather wrist splint (LS) with a commercially available fabric splint (FS) in adults with chronic wrist pain.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Participants (N = 25, mean age = 54) were randomly assigned to treatment order in a 2-phase crossover trial. Splints were worn for 2 weeks, separated by a one-week washout period. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after each splint phase using the Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis Hand Index (AUSCAN), the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and Jamar dynamometer by an observer blinded to treatment allocation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both styles of wrist splint significantly reduced pain (effect size LS 0.79, FS 0.43), improved hand function and increased grip strength compared to baseline (all p < 0.05) with no increase in wrist stiffness. There was a consistent trend for the LS to be superior to the FS but this was statistically significant only for patient perceived occupational performance (p = 0.008) and satisfaction (p = 0.015). Lastly, 72% of patients preferred the custom-made leather splint compared to the commercially available splint.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Leather wrist splints were superior to a commercially available fabric splint for the short-term relief of pain and dysfunction.</p

    Extinction risk and conservation of the world\u27s sharks and rays

    The rapid expansion of human activities threatens ocean-wide biodiversity. Numerous marine animal populations have declined, yet it remains unclear whether these trends are symptomatic of a chronic accumulation of global marine extinction risk. We present the first systematic analysis of threat for a globally distributed lineage of 1,041 chondrichthyan fishes&mdash;sharks, rays, and chimaeras. We estimate that one-quarter are threatened according to IUCN Red List criteria due to overfishing (targeted and incidental). Large-bodied, shallow-water species are at greatest risk and five out of the seven most threatened families are rays. Overall chondrichthyan extinction risk is substantially higher than for most other vertebrates, and only one-third of species are considered safe. Population depletion has occurred throughout the world&rsquo;s ice-free waters, but is particularly prevalent in the Indo-Pacific Biodiversity Triangle and Mediterranean Sea. Improved management of fisheries and trade is urgently needed to avoid extinctions and promote population recovery

    The core mass function in the Orion Nebula Cluster region : What Determines the Final Stellar Masses?

    Funding: European Research Council (ERC) via the ERC Synergy Grant ECOGAL (grant 855130) (R.S.K.).Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO C18O (J = 1–0) data having an angular resolution of ∌8'', we identified 692 dense cores in the Orion Nebula Cluster region. Using this core sample, we compare the core and initial stellar mass functions in the same area to quantify the step from cores to stars. About 22% of the identified cores are gravitationally bound. The derived core mass function (CMF) for starless cores has a slope similar to Salpeter's stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 M⊙, consistent with previous studies. Our CMF has a peak at a subsolar mass of ∌0.1 M⊙, which is comparable to the peak mass of the IMF derived in the same area. We also find that the current star formation rate is consistent with the picture in which stars are born only from self-gravitating starless cores. However, the cores must gain additional gas from the surroundings to reproduce the current IMF (e.g., its slope and peak mass), because the core mass cannot be accreted onto the star with 100% efficiency. Thus, the mass accretion from the surroundings may play a crucial role in determining the final stellar masses of stars.Peer reviewe

    Risk of Recurrent Arterial Ischemic Stroke in Childhood: A Prospective International Study.

    Background and purposePublished cohorts of children with arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in the 1990s to early 2000s reported 5-year cumulative recurrence rates approaching 20%. Since then, utilization of antithrombotic agents for secondary stroke prevention in children has increased. We sought to determine rates and predictors of recurrent stroke in the current era.MethodsThe Vascular Effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) study enrolled 355 children with AIS at 37 international centers from 2009 to 2014 and followed them prospectively for recurrent stroke. Index and recurrent strokes underwent central review and confirmation, as well as central classification of causes of stroke, including arteriopathies. Other predictors were measured via parental interview or chart review.ResultsOf the 355 children, 354 survived their acute index stroke, and 308 (87%) were treated with an antithrombotic medication. During a median follow-up of 2.0 years (interquartile range, 1.0-3.0), 40 children had a recurrent AIS, and none had a hemorrhagic stroke. The cumulative stroke recurrence rate was 6.8% (95% confidence interval, 4.6%-10%) at 1 month and 12% (8.5%-15%) at 1 year. The sole predictor of recurrence was the presence of an arteriopathy, which increased the risk of recurrence 5-fold when compared with an idiopathic AIS (hazard ratio, 5.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.8-14). The 1-year recurrence rate was 32% (95% confidence interval, 18%-51%) for moyamoya, 25% (12%-48%) for transient cerebral arteriopathy, and 19% (8.5%-40%) for arterial dissection.ConclusionsChildren with AIS, particularly those with arteriopathy, remain at high risk for recurrent AIS despite increased utilization of antithrombotic agents. Therapies directed at the arteriopathies themselves are needed

    How Comparable are Microbial Electrochemical Systems around the Globe? An Electrochemical and Microbiological Cross‐Laboratory Study

    A cross‐laboratory study on microbial fuel cells (MFC) which involved different institutions around the world is presented. The study aims to assess the development of autochthone microbial pools enriched from domestic wastewater, cultivated in identical single‐chamber MFCs, operated in the same way, thereby approaching the idea of developing common standards for MFCs. The MFCs are inoculated with domestic wastewater in different geographic locations. The acclimation stage and, consequently, the startup time are longer or shorter depending on the inoculum, but all MFCs reach similar maximum power outputs (55±22 ΌW cm−2) and COD removal efficiencies (87±9 %), despite the diversity of the bacterial communities. It is inferred that the MFC performance starts when the syntrophic interaction of fermentative and electrogenic bacteria stabilizes under anaerobic conditions at the anode. The generated power is mostly limited by electrolytic conductivity, electrode overpotentials, and an unbalanced external resistance. The enriched microbial consortia, although composed of different bacterial groups, share similar functions both on the anode and the cathode of the different MFCs, resulting in similar electrochemical output
