    Motivation and Hedonic Hunger as Predictors of Self-Reported Food Intake in Adolescents: Disentangling Between-Person and Within-Person Processes

    Background: Dietary behavior contributes substantially to health across the lifespan. Understanding interactions between stable characteristics and fluctuating drive states underlying youth’s food choices may inform methods for promoting more healthful food intake. The present study examined dietary motivation and hedonic hunger as interacting predictors of adolescents’ consumption of sweet, starchy, fatty, and fast foods. Methods: Intensive longitudinal data were collected from 50 adolescent participants (ages 13-18) over a 20-day study period. Participants completed a measure of dietary motivation at baseline and reported on hedonic hunger and consumption of palatable foods via a smartphone application at the end of each study day. Results: Results indicated that 66.7% of the variability in hedonic hunger was between-person and 33.3% was within-person. Between-person hedonic hunger was positively associated with consumption of fatty foods ( = .28, p < .05) and within-person hedonic hunger was positively associated with consumption of starchy foods ( = .38, p < .0001). A significant cross-level interaction indicated that as hedonic hunger increased, the slope relating controlled motivation to starchy food consumption become more strongly positive. Autonomous motivation was negatively associated with consumption of fast foods ( = -.14, p < .05). Additionally, the interaction term of within-person hedonic hunger and autonomous motivation indicated that as hedonic hunger increased, the slope relating autonomous motivation to fast food consumption became more strongly negative. Conclusions: Findings indicate that hedonic hunger has the potential to fluctuate over time, but conceptualization of the variable as both trait and state may be most appropriate given the current findings. Results confirmed that unique relationships exist between trait motivation and fluctuating hedonic hunger, and that the interactions of these variables may hold value in understanding and addressing unhealthful dietary choices. In particular, adolescents with high controlled motivation for diet may be vulnerable to the influence of hedonic hunger and especially prone to eating higher quantities of starchy foods. Adolescents with high autonomous motivation for diet may be less vulnerable to the experience of hedonic hunger and less likely to consume fast food

    La evaluación preliminar de la actividad antioxidante en extractos vegetales se realizó mediante el método de captura de radicales libres que utiliza el radical 1,1-difenil-2-picril-hidrazilo (DPPH). Con el fin de determinar las condiciones físicas, químicas y termodinámicas del ensayo fotométrico, se utilizaron los extractos metanólicos de plantas provenientes del Parque Regional Natural Ucumarí (PRNU) y Parque Natural Municipal La Nona (PNMN); extracto estandarizado de GingSeng (obtenido con el nombre comercial de GINGSANA) además de hidroquinona y ácido tánico. Los resultados permitieron establecer las condiciones óptimas las cuales corresponden a: 517 nm (longitud de onda), 30 minutos (tiempo de reacción) y temperatura ambiente (temperatura de reacción); adicionalmente, se indica la baja estabilidad de las soluciones del radical libre usado, hecho que implica inmediata utilización de las misma

    Physical Activity, Sedentary Time, and Diet as Mediators of the Association Between TV Time and BMI in Youth

Design: Cross-sectional study in 2 independent samples of youth. Setting: Data collection occurred by mail and telephone for adolescents and either at home or in medical settings for children. Sample: 928 youth ages 12-16 and 756 youth ages 6-12 and a parent. Measures: TV time, snacking/eating while watching TV, and a 3-day dietary recall were assessed via child/parent report. Physical activity and sedentary time were assessed by accelerometer wear. Analysis: Direct and indirect associations (through 8 diet and activity variables) of TV time with BMIz were tested in boys and girls in each sample. Results: TV time had a positive association with BMIz in 6-12 year old boys and girls. Direct associations emerged between TV time and the diet/activity variables, and between diet/activity variables and BMIz. Snacking/eating while watching TV had a significant positive association with BMIz in younger boys and mediated the association between TV time and BMIz (β = .06, p = .019; 25% attenuation). Conclusions: Snacking/eating while watching TV may be a possible reason TV time is consistently associated with obesity in youth. Targeting reductions in TV time and associated snacking could improve health impacts

    Patterns of Sedentary Time in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Youth

This study investigated rates of various sedentary pattern variables in Hispanic/Latino youth. Methods: Participants were 956 youths (50.9% female) in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Youth, a population-based cohort study of Hispanic/Latino 8- to 16-year-olds from 4 geographic regions in the United States (2012–2014). Total sedentary time and 10 sedentary pattern variables were measured through 1 week of accelerometer wear. Differences were examined by sociodemographic characteristics, geographic location, weekdays versus weekends, and season. Results: On average, youth were sedentary during 67.3% of their accelerometer wear time, spent 24.2% engaged in 10- to 29-minute sedentary bouts, and 7.2% in ≥60-minute bouts. 8- to 12-year-olds had more favorable sedentary patterns (less time in extended bouts and more breaks) than 13- to 16-year-olds across all sedentary variables. Sedentary patterns also differed by Hispanic/Latino background, with few differences across sex, household income, season, and place of birth, and none between weekdays versus weekends. Conclusions: Variables representing prolonged sedentary time were high among Hispanic/Latino youth. Adolescents in this group appear to be at especially high risk for unhealthy sedentary patterns. Population-based efforts are needed to prevent youth from engaging in increasingly prolonged sedentary patterns

    Contamination level and spatial distribution of heavy metals in water and sediments of El Guájaro Reservoir, Colombia

    Heavy metals have become a subject of special concern worldwide, mainly due to high persistence in the environment, toxicity, biogeochemical recycling and ecological risk. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to analyze the spatial–temporal distribution of heavy metals in water and sediments to determine the environmental status of El Guájaro Reservoir, where such studies have not been developed. Two measurement campaigns (dry and wet period) were carried out and eight sampling stations were selected. A comparison of water and sediment quality parameters with existing national and international regulations was done. Also, heavy metal distribution maps were generated, and the geoaccumulation index was calculated to identify sources and sediments contamination level. Based on the obtained results, agriculture and mining activities are the main causes of the reservoir contamination. This metals levels could be a potential risk for the aquatic life and the populations that are supplied from this water body

    Differences in adolescent activity and dietary behaviors across home, school, and other locations warrant location-specific intervention approaches

    Background Investigation of physical activity and dietary behaviors across locations can inform “setting-specific” health behavior interventions and improve understanding of contextual vulnerabilities to poor health. This study examined how physical activity, sedentary time, and dietary behaviors differed across home, school, and other locations in young adolescents. Methods Participants were adolescents aged 12–16 years from the Baltimore-Washington, DC and the Seattle areas from a larger cross-sectional study. Participants (n = 472) wore an accelerometer and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) tracker (Mean days = 5.12, SD = 1.62) to collect location-based physical activity and sedentary data. Participants (n = 789) completed 24-h dietary recalls to assess dietary behaviors and eating locations. Spatial analyses were performed to classify daily physical activity, sedentary time patterns, and dietary behaviors by location, categorized as home, school, and “other” locations. Results Adolescents were least physically active at home (2.5 min/hour of wear time) and school (2.9 min/hour of wear time) compared to “other” locations (5.9 min/hour of wear time). Participants spent a slightly greater proportion of wear time in sedentary time when at school (41 min/hour of wear time) than at home (39 min/hour of wear time), and time in bouts lasting ≥30 min (10 min/hour of wear time) and mean sedentary bout duration (5 min) were highest at school. About 61% of daily energy intake occurred at home, 25% at school, and 14% at “other” locations. Proportionately to energy intake, daily added sugar intake (5 g/100 kcal), fruits and vegetables (0.16 servings/100 kcal), high calorie beverages (0.09 beverages/100 kcal), whole grains (0.04 servings/100 kcal), grams of fiber (0.65 g/100 kcal), and calories of fat (33 kcal/100 kcal) and saturated fat (12 kcal/100 kcal) consumed were nutritionally least favorable at “other” locations. Daily sweet and savory snacks consumed was highest at school (0.14 snacks/100 kcal). Conclusions Adolescents’ health behaviors differed based on the location/environment they were in. Although dietary behaviors were generally more favorable in the home and school locations, physical activity was generally low and sedentary time was higher in these locations. Health behavior interventions that address the multiple locations in which adolescents spend time and use location-specific behavior change strategies should be explored to optimize health behaviors in each location

    Asociación entre consumo de alcohol y exceso de peso entre estudiantes universitarios de América Latina

    Introducción: El sobrepeso y la obesidad son problemas de salud pública de nivel mundial. Si bien existe información respecto al consumo de alcohol en estudiantes universitarios durante la pandemia, pocos autores han señalado la asociación entre este hábito y el exceso de peso en esta población. El objetivo fue determinar la asociación entre el consumo de alcohol y el exceso de peso en estudiantes universitarios de 10 países de Latinoamérica durante la pandemia por COVID-19. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio transversal y multicéntrico con 4.539 estudiantes universitarios matriculados en diez países de América Latina. Para la valoración del consumo de alcohol se utilizó la pregunta ¿Consumes bebidas alcohólicas? (1 porción 1 vaso de 200 ml). El índice de masa corporal (IMC) se determinó a partir del peso y la altura auto informado. Para determinar si el exceso de peso (IMC ≥25 kg/m2 ) estaba asociado con el consumo de alcohol, se utilizó un análisis de regresión logística, ajustado por edad, sexo, año de estudio, nivel socioeconómico, actividad física y tabaquismo. Resultados: Entre los estudiantes con estado nutricional normal, un 59,6% no consumía alcohol, mientras entre los que presentaban un exceso de peso era un 55,1%. Los estudiantes que consumían 2 o más porciones de alcohol al día tenían 2,18 veces más riesgo de tener exceso de peso (OR: 2.18 [95% IC: 1,26 a 3,77]), comparado con aquellos que no consumían alcohol. Conclusión: Se observó que aquellos estudiantes que consumieron más alcohol tuvieron más probabilidades de tener exceso de peso.
