    Consumer preferences for table cassava characteristics in Pernambuco, Brazil

    Cassava is a major source of carbohydrate for populations in the tropics; however, there is little information about the preferences of consumers toward the quality characteristics of this crop. This paper analyzes the demand for different cassava attributes, and applies the hedonic price method to estimate the values that consumers give to implicit attributes of cassava. The results show that ease of peeling, time of cooking and texture of cassava are the most important characteristics consumers consider when purchasing and consuming cassava.     Polypyrrole Coated PET Fabrics for Thermal Applications

    Polypyrrole can be chemically synthesized on PET fabrics, giving rise to textiles with high electric conductivity. These textiles are suitable for several applications from antistatic films to electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Here we discuss the thermal-electric performance and the heat generation of polypyrrole coated PET fabric samples, previously studied because of their electric conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. The measured Seebeck effect is comparable with that of metallic thermocouples. Since polypyrrole shows extremely low thermal diffusivities regardless of the electrical conductivity, the low thermal conductivity gives significant advantage to the thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT, comparable with that of some traditional inorganic thermoelectric materials. The heat generation is also investigated for possible heating textile devices.     Static splay-stripes in a hybrid aligned nematic layer

    A usual aperiodic hybrid alignment can appear in a nematic layer with weak anchoring only if the cell thickness is greater than a critical value dh, below which a static periodic pattern instead of the hybrid aperiodic structure could be preferred, if the energy cost for a three dimensional deformation, involving twist, is less than the cost for the two-dimensional deformation of splay-bend type. We have studied the occurrence of the mechanical instability leading to the static periodic splay-stripes, i. e. in the case of the tilt anchoring stronger at the one of the walls, in which the anchoring is planar, for several values of the twist anchoring strengths. Here the behavior of the threshold d for the periodic stripes is presented and discussed as a function of the anchoring energies and of the ratio of nematic bulk elastic constants, in the frame of the usual continuum theory

    Synchronized stationary clouds in a static fluid

    The existence of stationary bound states for the hydrodynamic velocity field between two concentric cylinders is established. We argue that rotational motion, together with a trapping mechanism for the associated field, is sufficient to mitigate energy dissipation between the cylinders, thus allowing the existence of infinitely long lived modes, which we dub stationary clouds. We demonstrate the existence of such stationary clouds for sound and surface waves when the fluid is static and the internal cylinder rotates with constant angular velocity Ω\Omega. These setups provide a unique opportunity for the first experimental observation of synchronized stationary clouds. As in the case of bosonic fields around rotating black holes and black hole analogues, the existence of these clouds relies on a synchronization condition between Ω\Omega and the angular phase velocity of the cloud.Comment: v2: 7 pages, 4 figures.     A recollimation shock 80 mas from the core in the jet of the radio galaxy 3C120: Observational evidence and modeling

    We present Very Long Baseline Array observations of the radio galaxy 3C120 at 5, 8, 12, and 15 GHz designed to study a peculiar stationary jet feature (hereafter C80) located ~80 mas from the core, which was previously shown to display a brightness temperature ~600 times lager than expected at such distances. The high sensitivity of the images -- obtained between December 2009 and June 2010 -- has revealed that C80 corresponds to the eastern flux density peak of an arc of emission (hereafter A80), downstream of which extends a large (~20 mas in size) bubble-like structure that resembles an inverted bow shock. The linearly polarized emission closely follows that of the total intensity in A80, with the electric vector position angle distributed nearly perpendicular to the arc-shaped structure. Despite the stationary nature of C80/A80, superluminal components with speeds up to ~3 c have been detected downstream from its position, resembling the behavior observed in the HST-1 emission complex in M87. The total and polarized emission of the C80/A80 structure, its lack of motion, and brightness temperature excess are best reproduced by a model based on synchrotron emission from a conical shock with cone opening angle \eta=10 degrees, jet viewing angle \theta=16 degrees, a completely tangled upstream magnetic field, and upstream Lorentz factor \gamma=8.4. The good agreement between our observations and numerical modeling leads us to conclude that the peculiar feature associated with C80/A80 corresponds to a conical recollimation shock in the jet of 3C120 located at a de-projected distance of ~190 pc downstream from the nucleus.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
