As a former Hunter Library student assistant (now full-time staff member), I found that my time spent working in the library not only contributed to my success, but it gave me the opportunity to serve the library and its mission. Based on a literature review, I am not the only one who has benefited from these work experiences. To gain a better understanding of how student assistants benefit Hunter Library and how Hunter Library impacts the student assistants, I had to investigate to dig deeper to support my observations

Background: During the past decade a debate has arisen on the possible utility of genomic science for public health purposes. Within this context, a survey is being conducted to assess attitudes of European public health (PH) professionals belonging to European Public Health Association (EUPHA) network regarding their role in the implementation of public health genomics (PHG), and their knowledge and attitudes regarding genetic testing and the delivery of genetic services. Methods: A pilot on-line survey was conducted on professionals from Sapienza University of Rome and the Vrije University of Amsterdam. The survey tool is composed of 5 sections: Personal details, Professional activity, Knowledge on genetic testing and delivery of genetic services, Attitudes on genetic testing and delivery of genetic services, Attitudes on the role of PH professionals in PHG. Results: 34 people responded to the questionnaire, mostly medical doctors (61.8%). No respondents correctly identified all evidence-based applications of genetic testing. More than one third of respondents agreed that it would be more important to invest resources in the social and environmental causes of ill health than in genetic testing. Nearly 70% thought that PHG needs to be grounded on evidence of effectiveness, a lower rate agreed ii should be grounded on cost-effectiveness. The rate of agreement with the proposed roles of PH professionals in PHG was very high. Conclusion: This pilot study showed a positive attitude but the need to improve knowledge of PH professionals on PHG. It provided useful input for the implementation of the survey to all members of the EUPHA network

A substantial amount of research analyzing student academic achievement has beenconducted throughout the years. Hattie (2009) synthesized over 800 meta-analyses related toachievement. He organized this information into six broad groups that may influence studentachievement: Contributions of the Teacher, Contributions of the Curriculum, Contributions ofthe Teaching Approaches, Contributions of the Child, Contributions of the Home, andContributions of the School. While this knowledge is significant, there is no indication that thisevidence is being used in the schools and classrooms. Hattie expressed concerns about the gapbetween scientific evidence and practice in the schools. The overarching purpose of conducting this research was to gather information aboutwhat teachers perceive to be the factors that influence student achievement. Teachers have asignificant opportunity to influence student achievement. Thus, it is important for theirperceptions to align with research findings. When teachers’ perceptions align with the researchfindings, students may be educated in the most effective manner possible. For this study, participants were solicited from school districts that were willing toparticipate in a web-based survey to measure perceptions of factors that influence studentacademic achievement. Participants in this study included teachers working with elementary through high school students. There was even distribution of the participants who teach eachgrade level, with most participants having obtained either a Bachelor’s Degree or a Master’sDegree. The majority of the participants were female, veteran teachers that provide regulareducation services in traditional public schools. The sample had a disproportionate number ofparticipants in rural communities, with only a handful of nationally certified teachers. The online survey provider, Qualtrics, was used to create a survey for this research. TheTeachers’ Perceptions of the Factors that Influence Student Achievement Survey (see AppendixG) is a survey that was designed to gauge teachers’ perspectives regarding the factors thatinfluence student academic achievement. The survey first provided participants with an overviewof the survey questions, information about informed consent, and whom to contact if they hadany questions about the survey results. The survey gathered information on demographics, perceptions of the influence of each factor within the six broad categories, and rankings of mostimportant to least important factor within each group. The information gathered through this study suggests that teachers may not be aware ofthe current research findings regarding the factors that may impact student academicachievement. Results of this study suggested that teachers tend to evaluate most factors to impactstudent achievement in a positive direction

The impact of child symptom severity and stress on school satisfaction among parents of children with autism spectrum disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) consist of a continuum of disorders that are increasing in prevalence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). This study used the variables of parenting stress and autism symptom severity to try to predict parent satisfaction with their child’s classroom and educational team. Participants in this study were 97 parents/guardians of children with ASD who completed a series of surveys including: a demographics form, a scale to measure autism severity, a parenting stress scale, and a survey measuring the parent’s satisfaction with their child’s classroom and education team. In this study, autism symptom severity and parent stress when combined were not significant predictors of parent satisfaction with their child’s classroom or his or her education team. There was a small correlation between parent stress and parent satisfaction with their child’s classroom. It is possible that this study was limited by the low scores on the autism symptom severity measure, suggesting that either the tool did not adequately measure autism symptom severity or the sample included parents of children who had less severe presentation of autism than in other studies. The study supported a link between autism symptom severity and parent stress. Consideration of different aspects of the education of a child with an ASD is needed in order to improve the education of one of the most rapidly growing disability groups in schools

The objective of this study was to understand the perception that parents of adolescents with high intellectual abilities or giftedness (HIAs/G) have regarding family dynamics, educational practices used, indicators of emotional/behavioral problems, and prospects for their children. This is an exploratory and qualitative research, in which three mothers and two fathers participated. All of them individually answered a semi-structured interview consisting of 15 topics that dealt with family routine, educational practices and their concerns with their children. Deductive thematic analysis indicated that the parents identified their children’s high intellectual abilities but needed additional information to manage these traits. There was a poor family routine in some cases, as well as the coexistence of authoritative and authoritarian practices in the same family. It was possible to observe that the parents feared their children’s expression of aggressiveness and isolation, and how much this could lead to these young individuals committing illegal acts. Thus, it was found that the parents are attentive to their children but have doubts about how to educate them.

Do Your Thoughts Matter? Because They Are Made Of Matter? An Exploration On The Mind Body Problem Through The Lenses Of Philosophy, Neuropsychology, and Quantum Physics

    Get PDF
In the late 21th century, the concept of Quantum Consciousness arose, joining theories and concepts from the disciplines of Philosophy, Neuropsychology, and Quantum Physics. The Preface of Mind, Matter, and Quantum Mechanics (Henry P. Stapp. 1993) states, “Nature appears to be composed of two completely different kinds of things; rock-like things and idea-like things. The first is epitomized by an enduring rock, the second by a fleeting thought. A rock can be experienced by many of us together, while a thought seems to be long to one of us alone” (Stapp, 1993 p. vii). Stapp refers to the mind-body problem, not as a problem, but as a connection; the mind-body connection. Descartes believed the mind and body could be separate and act separately. Stapp embellishes Descartes philosophy of “I think, therefore I am” through Quantum Physics by connecting the mind to the body; calling it the mind-body connection. Stapp states that nature is composed of two different things, rock-like things and idea-like things. I believe that rock-like things and idea-like things do not differ, but are one and the same. This paper explores the philosophies of Descartes, the contents of a thought and the ways in which neuropsychology and Quantum Physics help illuminate the question: do thoughts contain matter

Several risk factors compromise the health of workers in developing their daily services, affecting it in various ways, in subtle ways, almost imperceptible, with the archives workers, including trainees, this also happens, however there are numerous ways to prudence in the exercise of the work environment. From this perspective our research problem is to analyze whether Archival trainees of University Federal and Estadual of the Paraíba know the importance of using personal protective equipment. Methodologically the research was characterized as descriptive and exploratory with a questionnaire, and review literature. The students Paraibans study participants have shown through the results that acknowledge the importance of minimum safety conditions at professional level. Although, some institutions still do not present a favorable understanding of these conditions. We conclude that the activities in the file and other documentation centers are linked to the handling of documents and archives that although the progress is noticeable to society is significant caution in the scope of work so there are no negative derivations of this exercise.Vários fatores de risco comprometem a saúde do trabalhador no desenvolvimento de seus serviços diários, acometendo-o de diversos modos, de maneiras sutis, quase imperceptíveis, Com os profissionais de arquivo, inclusive com os estagiários, contudo, existem inúmeros meios de prudência no ambiente de exercício do trabalho.

For the present work, two monitoring systems were designed and implemented for the evaluation of anxiolytic activity in vivo in rats. These systems made it possible to visualize an application for each one respectively, they were created by the author called Clear/Dark and Labyrinth, various events to be measured. These systems were developed by blocks of: input, processing, storage and output (user interface). In the first block with the help of the Sharp sensors, distance data was collected, the second block processed the data obtained, which are transmitted through the NRF24L01 module to its receiver, for this block the Mega and Uno Arduinos were used. Being this the main board; in the third block, vectors were created for the storage of the emitted measurements, at this point the Matlab Software was used specifically for the graphical interface to process the information received by the receiver module NRF24L01 and be able to be visualized in the fourth block, in the final stage the application was programmed to show in addition to the data already mentioned a graph of the displacements. From the tests carried out, it is concluded that the synchronization time between the two platforms is 2 seconds. It has an error in the crosses of 0.467 points in the LDM and 0.333 points in EPM due to the sensitivity of the sensors. It is concluded that the implemented systems can become an aid tool for the development of anxiolytic tests. It is advisable to use artificial vision to perform image processing with the help of specialized software as well as the use of a single hardware platform with greater transmission capacity to avoid interruptions in sending data
